Michael Anthony provides the perfect harmonies, both for DLR and Sammy Hagar. In my opinion, he's largely responsible for their distinct vocal sound. One doesn't normally think of them for their vocals, but nobody else sounds like them.

Most of a guitarist's sound, and people sound differently, like how Eric Clapton doesn't sound like BB King, and Stevie Ray Vaughan doesn't sound like George Harrison...comes down to their hands. Even with all the effects pedals and amp extras that we have to choose from, just that left hand on fretboard is a huge part of the sound, and if you have someone who doesn't use a pick, it's even more noticable. That's why no matter what guitar he was on, or what his rig was, Eddie always sounded like Eddie.

I was a newlywed when OU812 came out and I was in love with the entire album immediately. My husband was a few years older, so I kind of expected some complaining about DLR not being part of the band, but was pleasantly surprised that he loved it as much as I did. The DLR years were great - no argument - yet, I much preferred it when Sammy and Eddie were playing together. It seemed to bring all 4 of them up to another level of Rock.

"Finish What Ya Started" got TOTALLY TRASHED! Callers kept saying "this ain't Van Halen's sound". This country flavored guitar playing. I myself, after hearing the song, kind of did not like it. My best friend was working for a talent agent and he had the job of accompanying Eddie Van Halen on a flight to LA. On the plane, Eddie told my friend what really happened on the Twister teacks. Eddie told Sammy not to reference anything about the tornado, twister, etc. Sammy worked for about an hour and then came back with a draft. Eddie said the song was about “a tornado in the distance”, etc. Sammy totally disregarded everything Eddie told him and just rushed writing the song. He told my friend, “his work ethic was shit…” It now makes sense because it sounds like Sammy didn’t want to work on the Twister soundtrack and wanted that time off.

What a great historical review of the time Sammy was part of VH …Valuing this great material which he and ED put together. Really refreshing to hear someone valuing both eras and trying to unite Van Halen fans together in order to preserve Edward’s incredible legacy…Unlike some of these ‘Roth vs Hagar’ sites on Facebook and You Tube which have gone absolutely bonkers trying to attack the Sammy era recently….Ed himself wouldn’t have wanted these factions raging against each other and Wolfgang has spoken about how crazy it is to dismiss a whole era of VH and get insulting about it…..The thing I remember about OU812 when it first came out was how VARIED the material was…..The Atomic Clock tight Rhythm of Finish What Ya Started,,,The choir like beauty of When it’s Love,,,,The velocity drive Synth of Mine all Mine,,,,the sheer sleazy boogie of Black and Blue,,,The visual picture landscape painting of Cabo Wabo,,with Ed and Sammy firing on all cylinders….And whatever the band politics with management changes, the music remains brilliant.

I'm not a big "single favorite" guy, but I was a little kid growing up in the 80's. My first real introduction to Van Halen was the album 1984, and I was instantly hooked. However, years later, when Sammy joined them, something about Sammy's voice, the way he and Eddie collaborated and the lyrics and rhythms came together, just resonated with me. When 5150 came out, I couldn't wait to save up the money to buy that tape! I wore that thing out listening to it on my way to school. If you had asked me at the time, I probably would have said 5150 was my favorite Van Halen album of all time... then OU812 came out. And it was like Van Halen just couldn't lose! I loved OU812 even more! It was sort of the anthem of my adolescence. To this day, whenever I hear 'When It's Love', 'Feels So Good' or 'Finish What You Started', no matter the day I'm having, it just puts me in a good mood!

"Finish What You Started" is my VH fave. At the time that came out, that sort of clean, finger picking Merle Travis/Chet Atkins sound had kind of been lost to history. So it was pretty earthshaking for a major and fairly heavy band to my tastes bring that back was very cool. The guitar sounds so simple, but in fact, speaking as a guitarist of 35 years, to do it and do it right, you really need to at the top of your game and really in the zone. Most guitarists wait for those moments, but Eddie lived there. I'm certainly not a big VH fan...I'll listen to them, but I don't believe I have any of their albums...if I do, it would be OU812. From sort of a nostalgic point, if anyone remembers the advent of the rather short lived cassette single...I had that track on one of those. Those would play 5 or 10 times and go bad. I may still have that tape with the little wrap around cardboard case somewhere.

I love the Hagar Halen era more because I felt more of a connection than DLR. They seemed to enjoy it more. As for the songwriting, I'd put them with Jagger and Richards or at least not too far behind them.

Love this song, play it all the time. Now I know the back story. I can see it unfold in my mind. And will not forget the story. What amazing band. David and Sammy were both amazing, and I think I prefer Sammy, but it's close. What does everyone else think?

A lil' late to this video, but "Finish What You Started" is one of my fave VH songs. While I didn't know the story behind it 'til now, I s'pose I should've guessed! (No wonder it has a stop/start sound.😂) Anyway, I still don't understand what happened between EVH and Sammy b/c they were great together. It's true, VH w/Sammy was just another level.

Sammy has told this story before, it's one of Rock's great song writing stories.
