“Ed Van Halen is going to change a lot of lives around the world in the next 12 months” - Kim Fowly predicted in Phonograph Record in 1977. Van Halen had only recently been signed to Warner at the time of Fowly’s review, and the Los Angeles band hadn’t yet released their landmark debut album. But they had created a tremendous following in the Los Angeles area with a massive heavy metal sound emerging from a small three piece band (David Lee Roth fronted the group as a consummate showman, but left the instrumental part to Eddie on guitar, Eddie’s brother Alex on drums and Michael Anthony on bass). By the time the band released their eponymous first album in February of 1978, Van Halen was poised for almost-certain commercial success. But nothing could have prepared audiences for the album’s completely instrumental second track, “Eruption,” in which Eddie groundbreaking guitar playing was showcased, full-force, for the world to see. Ozzy Osbourne’s guitarist, Zakk Wyld recalls: “It was beyond mind blowing. I’m going, ‘That can’t be a guitar. What is that?” Phast Phreddie Patterson wrote for Waxpaper in 1978: “Boyishly grinning Edward wails his guitar like his life depended on it…like a kid with a new toy, he tries to get as many noises out of his instrument as electronically possible. The results are unbelievable.” With his unconventional technique and distinct guitar tone, Eddie Van Halen revolutionized the guitar landscape for generations to come.
It is undeniable that Eddie’s guitar tone and technique are, in themselves, recognizable in any context; when the guitarist was brought in to play for Michael Jackson’s hit song “Beat It,” his solo is instantly identifiable as Eddie Van Halen. But Eddie further distinguishes himself through his songwriting.
As the only guitarist in Van Halen, Eddie spent the band’s early days developing a way to provide both the harmonic foundation and lead guitar parts through his one instrument. Reflecting on the recording of the band’s first album, the guitarist explained: “I remember feeling very uncomfortable with separating my lead and fill parts from my rhythm parts. Onstage, I’d gotten used to doing both simultaneously. I’d just noodle in between chord lines.” With the band’s original material, Eddie’s talent for creating expansive and virtuosic guitar parts is integrated inextricably into the songs. Further, while the guitar is certainly his showpiece instrument, he never forgot the musicianship training of his youth. In 1984, he turned to his keyboard roots, co-writing the #1 hit “Jump” which placed Eddie front and center with his unforgettable synthesizer riff and solo (the song also features a succinct but masterful guitar solo).

Eddie's rhythm playing and specially his PHRASING AND SWING are absolutely unmatched when you compare him to his contemporaries. I mean, when you hear a solo like the one one Bottom's Up, it's clear he focused on his phrasing as much as the flashy technical stuff when he was wood shedding. Love Ed.

Been trying to tell ppl that for years! Lead playing and phrasing from another universe AND rhytmn playing from the grooviest-in-the-pocket place which cannot be earthly. Dear God!!! Try to replicate his groove like on So This Is Love...many have come close..but NONE have matched it.

Its amazing how so many extremely talented guitarists still miss the nuances of Eddie's playing when copying him. The "I'm the one" tutorial in this video completely misses the whole swing feel of the song. How can you get all those notes right, get so many of the riff parts right, but still miss this? Its the most important part. Its the whole feel of the song.

Well said. If you can put on something like "I'm the one" and still think Eddie's spirit is gone, it's prob your spirit that's gone. Btw, spirits often attach themselves to their photographs & possessions. Naitve Americsns understood this, that's why they never allowed their picture to be taken. Ed's ENTIRE heart & soul is forever imprinted on Van Halen music. Whether you're listening to the tracks or playing it on a guitar, Ed's spirit is there with you. (Love You Ed! Great video! Thank you for this. One of the greatest things any musician can do in their lifetime is create their own style of music. Eddie did exactly that. Technique, power, dexterity, phrasing, groove, innovation, on and on - he had it all! But it was how he put it all together that mattered the most. Eddie created something entirely unique that will go down as some of the greatest music ever recorded. RIP King Edward. The world is a better place because of you.

As an 80s kid in the UK I had very little exposure to Van Halen, it wasn't until I saw the film Twister and subsequently getting the Best of Volume 1 album in the mid 90s that I really discovered the magic of EVH. He's even the reason that I first picked up the guitar. The guy was a wizard and his passing hit me hard. Your videos are wonderful and the attention to detail about everything that made Van Halen great is amazing. RIP King.

I was over at a buddy's place and he said to me "Sit down! Listen to this!" and played "Eruption" on his stereo for me and his neighbors. All I could say was "play it again!" o_0 Life was never the same again! Buy Alex on drums deserves some credit as well as daddy Jan Van Halen the jazz musician. Both made little brother Eddie better one way or the other I'm sure. And yeah his rhythm playing is underappreciated and his weirdass ideas for what to play for rhythm guitar parts , like in "Bottoms up". It's just a dunt dunt dunt dunt dunt dunt DUUUNT with some syncopation adjustments and on paper it's totally stupid but he turns it around into this amazing cascade of energy! Who does that? EVH does that! :D

This was a truly excellent vid. I'm not into the band, nor Eddie, and never really have been, however, the playing and sound in this video were absolutely beautiful - so much so that I nearly cried (literally) when listening to the 'Jump' solo where the ascending half/whole tone scale finally resolved. It is melodically and harmonically perfect and gives the listener such strong positive feelings and is almost life affirming in it's phrasing.

Eddie was the first guitarist I saw at my first concert Sabbath w,VH in 1978 when i was a teen. Changed my life forever....became part of the literal fabric of my life. What a genius and once in a lifetime musician. To learn and copy from is great but can never compare that to the inventer and nobody could ever do it as effortless and in the way Eddie did, magic!

Man, as a huge all-time fan of Eddie's playing and I could say the reason why I am now a musician, just listening to your words, I realize about your true appreciation for his music and how as you so correctly stated from the beginning, he changed music forever. I get the same goosebumps only thinking about Eruption. Every little piece he ever played was just out of this world. The tapping, Floyd Rose, Tone, etc. He even changed the way guitars are built now. So many guitar brands owe him money and their existence, just because he was a truly innovative genius. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about him. Your words matter!

Great video, but one correction needs to be made: Ed didn't use the variac to drive the amp harder. He LOWERED THE VOLTAGE to around 90 volts and cranked the bias up "too high". (Dave Friedman spoke about the bias trick) Mic a 4x12 Marshall cabinet loaded with Celestion Greenback speakers with an SM57 and that's where the brown sound magic is found... in addition to his hands, of course!
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Johnny, just to clarify, the Variac allowed Eddie to drive the amp harder. Meaning he could turn everything up, driving the amp much harder but with a reduced voltage it meant it wasn’t as loud. Sorry if that was confusing in the video?

No the whole Variac story is a lie lol. He simply said that he used it to throw other people off the scent while trying to copy his tone. Some interviews he said he turned up the Variac, and some interviews he said he turned down the Variac. Basically Eddie's tone is from his own mods and his amazing hands ;-)
