Learn these two simple rules to massively improve phrasing in your guitar solos: 1) Use Rhythmic Targets and 2) Use Harmonic Targets Practicing phrasing in this way will help you break out of meandering around the pentatonic shapes. It will lead to much more melodic solos that have greater impact by using space and intelligent note choices.
Using both Minor Pentatonic and Major Pentatonic, we'll examine how to use the structure of a song to inform your soloing and create dynamic, interesting phrases that follow the form in musical ways.

I wrote out the solo at 0:43 note-for-note and that's in our Patreon at www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver The Patreon also has the backing track, and more videos on this same topic. There are a couple of those licks (the E to D phrase) free on my website: www.bluemorris.com/post/breakthrough-phrasing-skills Thanks for watching everyone!

Besides being a very knowledgeable and fantastic guitar teacher Blue is also one of the nicest and most helpful I've ever dealt with. I recently bought both of his books and had trouble downloading the audio files. I got in touch with him and over the course of several days he tried a few different ways to get me the files. Since I am pretty much computer illiterate it took a lot of time and effort on his part. His patience was quite admirable and greatly appreciated. All of this while being busy doing all the other things he does. I can only say thanks again for all you do. Take care and keep up the great work.

Great lesson.....my parents were big band horn players. Father was an arranger as well. He used to play a game with us where the challenge was to see how many ways you could verbally say the same thing while phrasing it differently each time. Between volume, duration, pitch its was nearly infinite. It was a lesson that used to illustrate how easily it translated to music. Try it: 'how many ways can you say the same thing'.

The part not covered here that I struggle most with is the timing/rhythm of the licks. Which beat do I start and end a lick on, and what is the time of the notes. Are they triplets or not etc? Also, I’m not understanding the muting and staccato parts.

I might be able to help you with the Patreon: www.bluemorris.com/contact As for the tabs, as long as you can read the numbers as frets and the lines as strings, you can pretty much ignore the rest and use the audio tracks to listen for the rhythm. You can download the audio tracks from my website (link is at the beginning of the book). You could eventually try learning some of the additional symbols in time.
