I have a Schecter C-1 FR S in Black Cherry, stunning guitar that is easy to play. The sustaniac can create some great sounds if used togeather with the Floyd trem, but unless you are into music that sounds good with the effects, then after a while the novelty wears off. Still a useful addition to at least one guitar in your collection🙂

I have a Jackson Dinky FR-S. It a fine player for the $, but I totally agree the novelty wears off. I'm looking into making baritone music, but using the Sus for harmonic overtones.

I have the same guitar except mine is in the Sweetwater exclusive Aquaburst. Real Floyd, Seymour Duncan Full Shred, Sustainiac with the Ebony board. That Aquaburst finish is so deep. But I love it and it's my number one. Even over my guitars that are 5x the cost. Such a winner.

Maybe I'm unlucky, but I've found the sustaniac systems have a high failure rate. I've had 3 E-1 FRSs and 1 C-1 FR-S all of which I bought brand new, and the sustaniac system failed on all of them minus one of the E-1s. The worst one was the C-1 where the whole thing just became a dead pickup within a month of owning it. And no this wasn't a dead battery situation. As someone that owns mostly active pickup guitars, I'm used to swapping in new 9volt batteries quite regularly. Again, maybe I'm just unlucky, but if I'm not and that's just the norm for a pretty expensive system, then that could be the reason why the sustaniac system isn't more widely adopted.

Not that it helps you but I have a Schecter Synyster Gates Custom-S from around 2010 (I honestly can't remember) and I've never had an issue. I swap the battery every October even though they're never dead. If you've had that many issues I would think it's got to be a legit problem and I've just been really lucky. Truth be told I'd actually prefer the neck Invader. ;-) Cheers.

I've had a total of 5 failures (3 pickups and 2 PCB control units). Sustainiac stopped issuing warranty work to me, despite myself having proof that each incident was faulty crafstmanship from the factory. These included rusted transistors, a broken-on-arrival internal trim pot, literal missing soulder joints, etc etc ad nauseum.

I have Sun Valley Super Shredder FRS with Sustainiac - love the sustain, but hate how it chews batteries quicker than it says it should. Feels like only a few hours of playing and its done. Think I would also prefer paired with Dimarzio SD rather than the EMG Super 80 or whatever it is.

I have a Burny RLC 85, upgraded with the original Floyd Rose ( German made ) trem. It’s my go to for almost anything. With the sustainer, or sustainiac system, you can produce tonal combinations, equal to Wah pedals, or the articulations from your hands, but using a combination of these and other effects and techniques together can produce a far more expressive sound option.

I have that exact Sun Valley Super Shredder you showed the picture of - bought it specifically because it was the lowest-cost Sustaniac-equipped guitar I had seen. The guitar is fantastic and I like the Sustaniac feature a lot, although mostly what I've used it for so far is to create ambient drone stuff (which it is obviously ideal for).

Robert Fripp (King Crimson) and Steve Hackett both have used the Sustainer pickup + Floyd Rose setup in their custom guitars (both Fernanes-made, I believe). Granted, they are top-tier legends, but they practically invented a significant amount of modern guitar vocabulary and techniques, and I loved what they've done with these tools. I know it's not for everyone and there are certain limitations that people have pointed out with regards to the background noise, feedback, static, and the overall reliability... still, I've been using an e-Bow for years and love the effects I get outta them; I'd love to have a Sustainiac pickup in any of my guitars.

I own a Schecter BlackJack SLS Avenger with a Sustainiac I bought about a year ago. I bought it because it’s a great instrument, but also for the Floyd and Sustainiac. With the 3 modes of sustain and harmonics it is possible to do straight up stuff or get creative and get sounds that would be hard to get any other way. One main area it is useful is with modelers and the fact it’s much harder to get smooth, complex harmonic, “amp like” sustain into feedback especially at lower volumes. They work great in that situation. I agree with you 100% and have to imagine it accounts for a large portion of Schecter’s sales.

I’ve had two different guitars equipped with the Sustainiac. I enjoyed both, but I never kept the guitars very long, mostly because of staticky noice coming from the neck pickup when the system was turned off. The cleans just weren’t there for me. When activated, it was fun, but not real useful majority of the time.

I own a Schecter Banshee Mach 7 with a Sustainiac. Have you ever watched the anime "Bastard!!"? Basically it's where this Dark Wizard is imprisoned in a kid. TONS of metal references. It's a great, old school, "not for the morally timid" anime. Anyways, there's scenes where the kid remains in his child form, but his eyes light up and speaks in the loud boomy Wizard's voice. This is exactly what this guitar feels like. You look at it, and its in its child form, a guitar form you are familiar with. Kick the Sustainiac on, and out jumps the Wizard with a loud boomy voice. While engaged, the entire guitar vibrates from neck to body due to the set in neck. The vibration is very powerful. It feels like it's possessed, like it would levitate and say: "I am the ghost of Paganini. You call those arpeggios!?" That being said, it's an untamed animal in that mode. It's no longer your guitar, its the Dark Wizard, and you work on his terms. There's a lot of feedback that must be maintained if you slop around, so this aspect causes you to play differently (or embrace it!). The payoff is sustain for days, bends that don't choke, and a different electronic world to explore. If you have fun playing outside the box, its great. If you aren't that type of player, and aren't crazy about Floyds to begin with, you'll probably hate it. Using the Sustaniac disengaged, and as a neck pickup was better than expected. You're still utilizing the pickup in the bridge, but it doesn't sound as if you had the actual paired neck pickup. This being said, it feels great. It feels similar to my Seymour Duncan pickups. The Schecter guitars are always an awesome bang for your buck, and getting a guitar with the Sustaniac routing already done is a workload off your shoulders. I'm not going to do it myself or pay a tech to do it. This was a huge contributing factor to my purchase. If you want to explore something new, it's awesome. I love it. If you barely use the whammy bar for vibrato, and you're very grounded in how you think and play your instrument, I would pass.

I got an original Fernandez sustainer, bought used at guitar shop years ago for $200.00, green chipped off paint, tarnished Floyd rose. The staff at the guitar store thought I had the amp up too loud causing feedback, not so. My son has the guitar now looking into stripping old green chipped paint off to clean it up. But it sounds spectacular, just like your Schecter.

I have a Fernandes Sustainer guitar, it's also great combined with a synth pedal, (I use the Boss SY1), and a volume pedal . I've also run it through filters and sequenced gates to create rhythms similar to electronic/ glitch style percussion tracks. It's also great for adding textures and depth to my looper jams. Totally recommend people checking out a Sustainer of they get a chance.

It’s a cool feature to have. I’ve got it on my Chromeboy and I wouldn’t mind having it on another guitar or two but I wouldn’t give up my neck pickup in my EJ strat or my les Paul neck pickup just to have feedback abilities at low volume. Truth is as cool as it is, a little goes a long way. Kinda like a wah pedal imho.

To be honest, I never use the neck pickup but this pickup would change that! I have the Digitech FreqOut pedal, which does pretty much the same as an E-bow, the Sustaniac or the Fernandes Sustainer, the latter was there first, if I'm not completely wrong, at least Fernandes already had them back in the 90's in some of their guitars. The pedal has a decisive advantage, you can use it with any guitar, not saying that it is better, I love the pickup versions as well!

I just ordered a Schecter Hellraiser C-1, FR-S and I agree with you, I just don't think that many guitar players know about them. Can't be a mass production thing either, even though the systems are pretty difficult to retro fit as per the Sustainiac page, I would have to say that also is probably not the reason, since there are a lot of mass produced guitars with complicated electronics. Maybe the reason is that a lot of guitar players are into getting that sustained sound through cranking a tube amp? I have yet to play one, but have watched tons of videos on these things. I do know that Joe Satriani and Steve Vai use these systems on their guitars a lot. I have always been an ambient guitar player, always look for something to up my game, so I'm really looking forward to getting mine this week. I can think of at least a 100 songs that I could use this sustainiac system on already.

I’ve got the purple Schecter you reviewed, with lots of gain, i find it difficult to mute the sustainer, instead of constant switch flipping. What it does clean is cool, but I don’t play clean often, the ebow is about as controllable, but you have to hold it. What is surprising is how clean the sustainer PU plays, it’s actually great for jazz, even on hi gain it does not distort when the battery is off! Powerful midrange chime, but no real lows are available, and it’s a neck mount, so it obviously cuts the lows a bit. That was the biggest revelation, I love playing the sustainer PU without the sustain🙂

Several toggle switch positions allow you to play with harmonics if you wish, or not at all. It is a great guitar, not for metal really, but for Ed's purposes it works--creating sound landscapes for Radiohead. In the past I almost thought about getting an E bow but I thought it was kind of stupid and wondered why it couldn't be built into a guitar. I searched but I never actually found anything about sustainic. Basically forgot about my woes until Sophie Lloyd put out a video with one just over a year ago and I soon found myself waiting for mine to arrive. It's absolutely amazing and soon enough I plan to order a Banshee Mach 7 FR S and probably won't buy another guitar without one. Guess that means I'm a Schecter guy now. When are they going to make the 8 string model dammit!

I agree, ive been chasing this since i was a kid guitarist, boss feedbacker, Sustaniac, freqout, ebow, standing in front of the amp..even a time i considered getting a theramin. Im faking it now with a shimmer. And thinking of getting a literal bow, like a violin bow.

I don’t have a sustainiac, but I purchased a sustainer from a company overseas (Veyz) for my Peavey Raptor (first guitar), and it’s amazing. The stuff that can be played is just amazing, but fitting it in was a pain, and one of the switches broke rendering it useless for a bit. But it sounds cool. Really got it because Phil Collen of Def Leppard uses one, which is necessary for the stuff they play.

I have a Sustainiac on my Schecter Synyster Gates Custom-S and, while it's fun to play with, I do sometimes wish I had that Seymour Duncan Invader in the neck as well.

I want to eventually get a schecter with a sustainiac and Floyd rose and fishman modern bridge pickup with stainless steel frets. But I was just looking at the Fender Ed O’Brien Stratocaster earlier today that has the Fernandez Sustainer.

I used to have a Boss DF1 that did something similar I think it’s a little more advanced on this Schecter though plus you’re a ton more guitarist than I am

“You don’t loose anything by having it” except for having a humbucker in the neck. Even Syn Gates states that live, he sounds “nasally” because he doesn’t have the neck humbucker and instead has either the sustainiac (bridge) or a SC Neck.

I have a sun valley super shredder with the sustainiac, no issues at all, and the neck pickup isn’t noisy at all while it’s disengaged. It actually sounds really good. I dunno, I’m happy. Lol

Its not for me , altho I like hearing them used . Robert Fripp is an example of use w out a wammy. I made one before they were commercially available, but, yeah the novelty wore off so fast I didn't even mount it permanently. All you need is an op amp and a coil. Just limit the current going into the coil so the windings don't melt. ,

My first intro to the Sustaniac was the Manson MA-EVO Bellamy sig. And my god, I can’t buy a guitar without having a sustainer now. Schector has always been my go to for guitars. My first guitar was a Schector USA Diamond Series from 1995, so I’m happy to see that schector offers guitars with Sustainers. Only gripe is the set neck vs bolt on, schectors should be set neck but I can’t seem to find them anymore.

I have the same guitar it was kind of expensive I purchased it used for 750 at guitar center in Springfield missouri I'm not sure of the date it was made,I like it I create many different things with it ,I think if people tryed it as you said many more would turn to those types of guitars ,I do think alot of people dont think it's very practical though and that's why they disengage from playing them ,phil Collen of def leppard uses a guitar with a sustain system he utilizes it very well to point you dont know he has one in his guitar, there are settings on the system in which you get short to long variations I'm not sure how Phil sets his ,mine is set kinda middle if you will, I'm still learning how and kinda when to use it ,but again many players think it's not practical so I think that's the problem, anyway good video

I had my first Sustainiac way back in 1990. It was in a Hamer Chaparral Elite. Man I loved that guitar. Sadly it was stolen from my home in 95. I have never been able to replace it.

Feedbacker effect in BOSS' current guitar processors provides the meat-and-potatoes version of sustainer effect, i.e. octave up mode only. so no special pickup required.

Your right there really isn’t a good reason not to have a sustaniac pickup on at least one guitar in your collection. I’ve just never had one since I’ve began learning guitar. But I think I might need to change that.

I have a couple of older Fernandes guitars with Sustainers, also have an Ebow I bought in the 1980's. They are fun to mess with. Neither guitar are my main guitars. I don't particularly like hot bridge pickups, which is something you need with a Sustainer/Sustainiac system to work properly. They tend to eat batteries like crazy as well. I recently got a Freqout, but it sounds weird to me.

i ve wanted to have a sustainiac ever since i ve first played a fernandes with it in it. I ve filled that void with a Digitech FREQOUT though, which means, i can have that effect with ANY guitar in a pedal.

I had a custom Amfisound made for me about 8 years ago now, you can go see it in their gallery, it is partly a copy of Pekka Kokko's strat style electric, but mine has a battle-worn Finnish flag finish instead of Pekka's swamp rust look. I had a sustainer put into it when it was built, I had been in the same line of thinking as you back then, I thought it "could only add" to the experience of a guitar. Since then, I still have the guitar, but I've since had to replace the Sustainiac 3 times, and the sustainer PCB system 2 times. The third "incident" (thats a strong word, it died from regular usage, so...), Sustainiac refused to replace it, despite myself having proof each time it had been factory defective. So I threw it out. I gutted the electronics, and with plenty of switch spaces and a larger than normal electronics cavity, I went to town on a new setup. I used a DiMarzio Injector and a Cool Rails both parallel mounted in the neck slot with phase and tap switches where the sustainer controls used to be. I can essentially make a 3-rail humbucker, or get a load of additional tones and frequencies now. In my personal opinion, the sustainer is a gimmick that loses its charm very quickly. It had limited capability and is largely dependent on other peripheral gear like pedals or a trem bar to extend its viability as a dynamic tool. Add to this they are infamously lousy on quality control and also that their public relations department often times refuses warranty work, I'll never buy one again. In my opinion, the reason they still havent caught on is because despite being a piece of gear that has in one form or another existed since the 1980's, they're a one trick pony and we've all heard what that trick sounds like. It takes up the space of a good, dynamic pickup (the neck) and doesn't offer much in return, in that as a standalone pickup, the sustainer is pretty awful. Its a stacked single coil with very poor bottom end range, which is basically pointless because bottom range is what the neck pickup does best. Hard pass.

Eddie Van Halen did a cool song called Catherine (KZbin it) where he had a Sustainer system in one of his guitars and it was him just being him and trying something different. I also think he used it in the song from the Twister soundtrack Respect the Winds as well. I remember back when Fernandes had these in some of their guitars and I thought it was gimmicky but now I find them pretty cool...novel..but still cool!
