Crazy how, eight years later, Sentient Glow made it on a Periphery album. One of my favourite songs by Haunted Shores/Periphery. Mark is also my likely biggest guitar influence. These two videos were a massive inspiration for me back when I discovered them.

"This tuning I learned from Misha Mansoor, who learned it from Nolly Getgood from the band so and so". Its crazy how it almost seems like certain people are meant to be great, they just aren't in the right places yet. Makes me wonder what made all those dudes decide to just become their own band.

I know, right ? I think it's what makes Periphery special, the 'whole is greater than the some of it's parts' so to speak.

I know I'm 4 years late, but Periphery was already a band at this point, but Nolly and Mark weren't in it yet, haha. I don't know if this was general knowledge 4 years ago or not.

I really like this guy's candor about how he doesn't know theory but yet he writes creative, melodic, intricately layered riffs. I know theory, but imo you don't need to know as much as people think to be able to pull of great music. At the end of the day it's more feel and ear than anything, though people hate to admit that because you can't teach it/learn it.

The name of the tuning would be "Open Cadd9" since it has a major 3rd (E, the 4th string) and a 9th(D, the first string). The other four strings are either C(root note) or G (fifth note), thus making the tuning open Cadd9.

Elliot Coleman former singer of sky eats airplane was briefly in tesseract. He's the one who recorded the acoustic inspired EP but left shortly after that so we never actually got to hear him sing his own lyrics and/or melodies. Tesseract now has Ashe O'hare i believe and he's recording the next LP with them.

Erra came from my home town. Good ass band. Jesse the guitarist that does the clean singing use to be in a melodic death medal band called By Blood And Iron, they're not together anymore but they have some good songs. Well pretty much every one in erra was in BBAI, the drummer Alex, bassist Adam (he played keyboard), and Jesse (guitar).

@Neltheros Yeah knowing theory is sometimes a trap, you feel a need to start writing in a particular key or stay very tonal, which is often not a good thing.

I "know theory" but it doesn't mean anything really outside the context of classical music; theory only gives guidelines, you can't guarantee something will sound pleasing just because it was written theoretically.

Haunted Shores is Mark's "side project" that he uses as a way to express all his ideas that kind of get rejected from Periphery. There's 6 guys in periphery and they sort of vote on what makes it to the album, so when he has an idea but it doesnt fit into anything the rest of the band are working on, he'll put a pin in it and work on the rest of it on his own.

@spoofy1337 so its impossible to know what youre doing without knowing theory? if thats your experience I am sorry for you. all you need to know is the fretboard and you're ready to go, just like this guy. he does not know theory but writes 1000 times better than pretty much anyone who gets on here and is like "he doesnt know theory". thats my 2 cents. but of course you can be as "theory" as you want, still does not make you a good musician if at all a musician.
