I'd cut off a finger to see a live performance of this piece with the same exact lineup. Watched this on youtube several times over the years and I just can't get enough of it.

Most beautifully gauged ending I've ever heard. Schnittke had an unprecedented ability to make a soloist sound like they're actually dying.

When Schnittke wrote his 2nd cello concerto for Mstislav Rostropovich, R said to S, 'when i play the opening bars, and final bars, I die'. S responded 'yes, Mstislav, but there is hope in my music'. R retorted, 'there is, Alfred, indeed there is....but it's already in the next world'.
