Both great guitars...hard to beat the LL16 (value, and sound for money....upgrade the nut and saddle, pins and good to go). I had the chance to play the LL56 against the FG9....and well...both were great, both were different, but I thought the LL56 sounded like a Yamaha, where the FG9 is pushing to sound more Martin like (American Dread-like), which makes sense as it seems to be focused on the American market.

Thank you for doing this video. In the first comparison, I liked the LL16 a little better. As I listened to more of the segments, the Fg9 sounded a little more refined and more like the expensive guitar it is. That said, considering the money, it doesn't sound three or four times better than the LL16. The law of diminishing returns is a factor. If they were close to the same price I would probably go for the FG9; however, I have owned an LL16 for many years and I am very happy with it. It is a great sounding guitar, and an amazing guitar for the money. Thank you Yamaha!

I played 2 examples of this model, both were rather tight and heavy, not boomy at all. Though relatively rich tone and chimy! Gotta admit they had plastic pins, saddles, nuts and undersaddle elements. All the crap robbing the tone.

Unsolicited suggestion for content. Compare and contrast the FS9R and the FS9M. Love your content and presentation. Most of us will never get to see these guitars in stores or play them.

My LL16D Black is got scalloped bracing that I did it my self, also bone, saddle and pins, dressed with Martin PB Strings 12-53. The LL16 Series tends to be very bright and glassy, after the changes I noticed a more deep, woody dark ,complex even tone, old strings sounds fantastic on mine.

They both sound great of course, but that FG9 is a CANNON in volume and tone. Plus it’s so stunning to look at. I was just looking at one on Sweetwater to confirm the price (😦) and it had the most straight grained smoked dark stain looking rosewood, those elegant Kumiki inspired fret markers. No doubt it’s absolutely worth every penny it’s commanding. Say Jarvis, have you seen that 1980s video on KZbin of Randy Travis singing “Promises” with only a very rare Yamaha. It was the Martin D-45 of Yammys and absolutely stunning. There’s actually a very interesting story of that particular guitar that was loaned to Randy. He tried desperately to buy it following the performance, but was not for sale. Apparently, later on it was destroyed in a fire and rebuilt. I do not recall the model, but IF you have a spare moment, I promise it’s a short vid worth watching 😉🙏

FG-9R sounds liike warm magic and very hypnotic, mesmerising. No harshness like from many other rosewood guitars. I would Always choose four FG9-R priced like a LL16 for around 1000 USD....;-)

Would you still favour the FG9 M over the FG9 R version? To me the R version sounds more juicy, wider and more spicy and delicately nuanced than the M model. Difficult to put into words... Thanks.

Hi Jarvis... like to get your opinion. Am thinking to get a guitar for my dad as an upgrade to his current FG730S (which he absolutely loved after getting your upgrades), I did kind of bring up LL16, but he was saying jumbo body might be too big to be comfortable. Is the LL16 a lot bigger than the dreadnought? Also, since he's strummer, would the LL-TA be an interesting option? Thank you!

I just couldn't justify buying a guitar for as much as the FG9 costs. My playing is far from worthy 😅. I do have both the FG5 and FS5. Lovely guitars. I'd love to own an LL16 D. Love the slightly blingy look of it. I was searching for a rosewood back/sides guitar a few months ago and was looking for a good deal on an LL16 D but found an Alvarez MD70bg on sale in the UK. I bought that one and I'm very happy with it. The new Alvarez Laureate dread just destroyed a blindfold challenge on the Andertons youtube channel against some BIG names in the guitar world so Alvarez are doing wonderful things. Just like Yamaha have been doing.

Love my Yamaha LL-TA similar to LL-16 ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipPWkoWBjtmdgaMfeature=shared) just with amazing effects built-in... For the price you can't beat it... killed most of my other Taylor, Martin guitars... I would say that the labour cost it's the greatest factor here ( Japan vs China ) , I can't say the FG9 is 4 times better than the LL16 ( LL-TA similar), so I understand the guy that said he returned it eventually, the cost is a pretty great factor, especially these days with wars and confusion around... The used market is down and recession is nearby
