These videos and audio files are bonus content related to the June 2014 issue of Guitar World. For the full range of interviews, features, tabs and more, pick up the new issue on newsstands now or at the Guitar World Online Store:guitarworld.mys...
Hello, and welcome to my new GW instructional column. It's good to be back! I hope the ideas and concepts I present here in the coming months will give you inspiration and insight into your own path to musical creativity.
The most important thing I can say is that you should always strive to make your own distinct musical statement with what you play on the guitar.
Once you've learned from the examples I present in this column, I would like you to completely disregard the examples themselves and retain only the techniques contained within them.
As soon as you get the idea of where I'm coming from with a certain lick or phrase, I want you to change it into something of your own invention and tap into your own creative curiosity as quickly and fully as possible.
For the tabs to this lesson, be sure to check out the new June 2014 issue of GW!

I know like in past, when Mary said he felt playing in Megadeth was a gun metal gray palette. I think he would fit quite well and really explore his potential in a Progressive Metal band. The sky is the limit what he could do in that type of band with his already unique style and playing. Just unfathomable of the possibilities.

I’ve practiced to Marty Friedman instructional videos since the early ‘90s. Like he states, I’ve always learned things the way they are taught & if in the process I can modify something to feel more comfortable & more economical for MYSELF. I’ve took bits I learned from Friedman, Hammett, Mike Wead & Skolnick to try & come up with a style contrived of many. I would suggest to take lessons like a GUIDE not mandatory &, if you can pull of the same techniques/riffs, modify them to fit your style. Also, Marty has another about sweep picking & mentions how he doesn’t pay attention to picking techniques. I’ve learned things like Frank Gambale’s “speed picking” technique, however, I only use it when a phrase warrants it. Usually, I modify my picking style numerous times during a solo or a rhythm, for that matter. I think Friedman’s philosophy is to be mutable, able to change on the fly to suit YOUR desires. Thinking of something as “the way” is limiting & can have adverse effects. That is how religions came about & look at all of the death & suffering religious zealots with their monotheistic stubbornness. 😉

Well said. I see so many really great guitar players playing the same generic sounding metal these days because of it. I find the way to do things that is easiest for me, or that I simply like doing. I watch lessons like this, realize I'm doing it wrong, but then expand on the way I was doing it instead of learning the proper way, or I just try to switch it up for fun. I like trying out weird phrasing and rhythms, sometimes it sounds like shit, but when I figure out something cool, I'm way more likely to remember it and implement it in my playing. And I got pretty good at stuff like cross picking and string skipping just by refusing to learn how to sweep pick like everyone else. I can actually sweep pick now, even though I've literally never practiced doing it, not sure how that happened lol.

Marty Friedman is so on the money about the infinite possibilities of how to execute a lick! I originally saw this idea from the late Gary Moore around 30 years ago & it's something I've ALWAYS lived by!!!! A riff is like a fingerprint/D.N.A etc..... As a technical competent player as I am,their is no substitute for using your ears & if it sounds good it is good!!!! I'm not telling anybody too avoid learning theory, but don't let the brain overwhelm the heart & also don't let your heart govern your musical brain!Everything is best to work in harmony together!!!

i think that the point is that it's easier to interiorize the notes and their sequences when you have no notions in your head, in order to feel them, i'm not sayin that Learning theory is wrong, but i really think that it's much better to learn theory after you've learned to hear what you play without rationalization, obviously simple stuff, that's what i do when i teach, i first teach simple chord progressions, melodies, and after they learrn and enjoy playing them i explain, little by little

Coming back to this video two years later I can confirm that things get less mind blowing over time. Just two years of practice has me a long way from Marty but also able to make up some shreddy sounding licks like that and have way quicker fingers, they just sound a little generic but I'm getting there. Hope all you fellow musicians keep your heads up and press on understanding the art of shred and improvisation.

Instead of complaining about his picking technique, take a look about the way his two hands are tremendously interconnected...He doeesn´t even think about where he is hammering , pulling or so , while his piucking hand is simply falling in the place ot needs too....First time I took the time to , indeed ! Certainly a strange ability, but not an excuse to play wrong...neither to critizice..Take it as it is..To me it still seems strange ..but...a true teaching about freedom! And about "own desitions " as he is trying to tell us all along this great videos! To know the theory and technique, but...create our own style-so difficult to dare to achieve for most of us, whatever instrument we try to play!

If your too caught up in his "bad" technique in this vid then your probably not ready for the lesson.

I dont know anyone who's ever said Marty has bad technique. Different yes but not bad, seeing that he plays guitar better than 97% than the guitar population.

It's not technique everybody's joking about, his technique is about as perfect as it gets..... but that picking hand looks crazy lol

So it’s ok to noodle on guitar to find out the tones by ear. That’s great! I’ve been told that it’s a bad thing to noodle on guitar.

He sounds sloppy. Don't think his right hand technique falls under the category of "if it works for you, its OK", because he barely mutes with his right hand and you can really hear that because of the noise.

I think it's more about the rig. It sounds like he's using a virtual amp copy on a computer, you can tell by the way it makes noise before and after he plays. Haven't you heard him play in Cacophony for example? Live and studio he sounds very clean.

I know he sounds pretty clean normally. But I'm not convinced that a VST would introduce more noise. I play on plugins at home but I've also played quite a bit of different tube amps and there is no difference in how much string noise stands out for a given level of gain. You're probably just hearing a noise gate. When I listen to what he plays I just hear regular old string noise that every metal player knows all too well from their beginner days. When you look at his hands it becomes painfully clear is that there is no possible way that he can mute the bass strings when both of his hands are coming from below. When he plays the plain strings all the wound strings are just out in the open, able to pickup any kind of sympathetic resonance................... I'm completely baffled why any guitarist that plays with any kind of gain/overdrive/distortion would ever have such a technique.

He said in an interview that he had developed this technique for himself to avoid muting the strings as he thought the sound of muted strings wasn’t natural. Not muting the strings is the point of his picking technique . Just telling you, Marty was not just in megadeth , he was in cacophony before that with Jason Becker where he created one of the toughest albums ever-speed metal symphony . He has his solo albums which are beyond words melody wise- scenes, introduction. Not to be rude or something, but just explore a bit more about these guitar gods.
