okay, well, modes are simply inversions of the major scale. So, if you play the 3 note per string major scale in G, you're playing Ionian (technically). However, if you start the same scale on A, rather than G, but play through the G major scale, you'd now be in dorian.. If you start from a B note, and play through the G major scale until you reach the B octave, you've hit phrygian. The important thing is that you cant hear a mode without having the correct note in the background

Here is a "I don't care" moment for y'all. One of my best friends played guitar with Marty during some of his solo touring. He knows I have always been a huge Megadeth fan so it was kinda funny when he sent me the link to the article saying that he was going to be Marty's guitarist. He was on stage with Marty trading off solos and obviously backing him up. His name is Ron Jarzombek..(you should look him up) that is my claim to fame :-) Great thing is he is just as nice as Marty. Very humble

It does sound Phrygian... but I believe he's playing over C Harmonic Minor and towards the end he switches to Minor Pentatonic. But its definitely the key of C minor.
