I love how this instrument, it sounds like two instruments playing at once. The bass, low strings create the rhythm and the higher strings the single notes, it's beautiful.

I was absolutely without knowing why drawn to buy one of these. It needed strings and I couldn't afford them, but knew my sister could. So I gave it to her, oh I only paid $25 for it. I'd love to be able to play anything on one if these, haven't a clue wgy I was so drawn to it , and I couldn't afford the price I don't know how I thought I'd be able to restring it. Just another of life's mysteries added to the list of; Why's.

What is the name of this instrument? This is a type of zither called a chord zither, an instrument developed by German settlers in USA in the mid - late 1800s. It was mass produced and sold door to door in many countries including Australia. The idea was to make an instrument that anybody could play, using numbers and letters. However, not everyone was able to keep the instrument in tune (62 strings) and most finished up unused. I play a 5 chord zither and also a 6 chord zither . There are also 4 chord (usually US made) and 3 or 2 chord zithers for kids. In Germany they are called Akkord zither or Guitar zither. As its name implies, the chord zither has a series of pre-tuned chords on the left hand side strummed by the left hand while the melody is played in the melody section by the right hand using a plectrum. The chord zither must not be confused with the concert zither which was made famous by the Third Man Theme. Best regards, Etienne

Thanks for taking time to write and for your appreciation of the instrument and the music. My hope is that the chord zither will one day be more widely accepted and not only used for playing light music as you call it. Sorry about writing in english. It is easier for me after 51 years in Australia. Kind regards. Etienne

It's good for my English reading you ! Write in French ? Don't remember Etienne !

Lovely instrument. But I don't understand one thing. Each song has its own tuning? Is the tuning never fixed?
@guitarzither Жыл бұрын
Good question. The only change to the tuning is to change the G major chord to G minor when I play in the key of D minor. (example as in "Separation"). I have a small lever which changes from Major to minor. Here is the tuning I use for my 5 chord zither: Melody section: a0, b0, c1, d1, e1, f1, g1, a1, bflat1, b1, c2, d2, e2, f2, g2, a2, bflat2, b2, c3, d3, e3. Chords: from left to right: G major ( g1, d1, b0, gbass) D minor (f1, d1, a0 dbass) F major (f1, c1, a0, fbass) A minor (e1, c1, a0, abass) C major (e1, c1, g0, cbass). I hope this answers your question.
@pinolambrecchione1077 Жыл бұрын
@@guitarzither So C major/A minor/D minor/G major/ it's the harmonic turn of C major. Is the choice of pieces that can be performed conditioned by the availability of only one tuning? Are there any zithers that allow for wider chord coverage, with selectors?
@guitarzither Жыл бұрын
On a 5 chord zither, you play mostly in the key of C major plus a bit in A natural minor. Also if you tune G amjor to D minor, you can play in the key of F major and D minor. The problem with a more chromatic tuning is if you want to play in other keys, you run out of chords. Also, extra sharps slow you down. A have a 6 chord zither for playing pieces in A melodic minor, like Greensleeves, but I play mostly on the 5 chord zither. Cheers @@pinolambrecchione1077
