Fabi referring to Jonathan Rowson Tweet about "sublimated self-care". FWIW I don't know the terminology but for me Ding's play throughout the match was consistent with someone wrestling with the idea of letting go of the World Championship. It's very complicated. When he did lose, he fought like a tiger to win it back. But at the end with a4, dropping the pawn, and then not ensuring the draw by forcing the exchange of Rooks this seems like someone coming to terms with getting themselves out of a powerful but destructive relationship.

No, Ding didn't know RF2 is losing for a minute or more, it took Gukesh like 15 seconds by watching his reactions, it took Hikaru a bit more! Even chess engine took quite some time, way over depth 20, so it was NOT an obvious blunder. Rook to F2 was not even the real problem, the real problem was Bishop at A8! So one move was NOT a blunder, but combination of BA8 and RF2 was bad!

Even taking into consideration the match situation and Ding's willingness to make draws from better positions, I remember thinking this last game absolutely looked like an early round of some open tournament where a 2200 facing a GM is desperate to make a draw. Still, I didn't think Ding would lose in the manner that he did especially since he raised his level to strike back in game 12, and I was disappointed the match ended this way, but Gukesh absolutely earned it. I appreciate Fabi being so even tempered in his analysis, and I am sure he remembers hanging Rb6 against Giri at Tata Steel when trying to reach the time control.... but the difference is that wasn't the final game of the WCC, and the position was far more complicated

I am a huge fan of Fabi, and I felt he was the most deserving in 2022, and, that in my opinion was a huge miss. Guki, for that matter any new player coming and winning in 2024 is only the logical conclusion. Gukesh's win obviously boosts the new gen players, like Arjun, Nodirbek, Alireza, Kaimer, and few dozens of Indian players. Now they all want to jump into the fray. But to maintain the top level of chess, when compatriots from same generation are declining, is not easy. I dont want to see that happening to Fabi. its hard to stay motivated when you know you will have to challenge a 20 year old much stronger ( assuming normal progression) Gukesh

Ding confirmed in his chess base india interview that his team was only the same from last time plus Ni Hua. 4 people: 3 GMs and a computer guy. Gukesh had at least double the team, and it's a bit ironic Gukesh hired the mental coach when Ding was the one who faced mental issues. Very different approaches, but it makes sense given their personalities. I don't think Ding likes having too many people, it adds to the pressure, and sometimes it can be bad to have too many cooks in the kitchen. But I think Gukesh was better prepared for sure. I think he put his absolute all into this match. Ding as well but his passion for chess at this stage of his life is less, his energy is less, while you could feel how much Gukesh lived for this and only this. I'm very impressed with how Ding did, he really is one of the biggest chess talents, he's clearly far from his peak and you could tell from his body language he wasn't doing well physically either, shaking, coughing, fidgeting, and still the match almost went to tiebreaks. It was a hell of a match, and I really appreciated how gracefully both handled the spotlight and the results with great sportsmanship and humanity.

@prcbras2 күн бұрын
@@FarCrySource He very definitely could have won if not for the blunder, and I disagree he was always trying to draw, that's just a talking point by people with little chess understanding. He wasn't playing safe openings, and he wasn't responding to surprises with the computer approved moves, he was taking risks to get opponent out of prep. He was playing sharp, it even cost him in some games. He went for draws when it was logical or when he saw danger in the position. Conserving energy was a more important factor for Ding than Gukesh, but if he was always trying to draw he could have much more easily and much sooner. Also winning 2 games in a match is already statistically higher than most people who play world championship mathes. It's not easy to do. Caruana didn't win any, Karajkin won 1, Nepo won 0 in his first match, it's usually almost all draws, even Magnus.
