Gukesh drags Vidit's king out in the open and checkmates it | FIDE Candidates 2024

The second half of the Candidates 2024 has begun and the same players are now pitted against each other as they were in round 1 but with reversed colours. Vidit Gujrathi had the white pieces against Gukesh. And it was an extremely important round because Vidit was on 50% score, while Gukesh was on +1. Gukesh surprised Vidit with a relatively new idea on move 4 and that was the start of the feeling that Gukesh was in complete control of the game. Check out the duel with commentary by IM Sagar Shah.

Vidit's time management has been shockingly bad in the tournament, it's been 8 rounds and you'd think he'd have addressed it by now but no he continues to play like he's got extra time on his clock, using more than an hour by move 13, thinking for 20 mins in opening just to castle. It's like he's obsessed with playing the absolute best move in every position, even in opening where you can play a few different moves and not be worse

That was a tough loss for Vidit and his chances for winning this tournament drop significantly with this loss. Unfortunate but Gukesh shows he is a dangerous counterpuncher like Karpov was and you have to respect that. You get just a bit impulsive against him and you pay for it.
