The 61st National Championship (Gurugram, August 17-27, 2024) was important from the perspective of both the *FIDE Circuit 2024* and the *FIDE World Cup 2025 Qualification* (with 7 qualification spots!). Why didn't the top players take part in this? National Championships are eligible for FIDE Circuit. Also, being a 50+ player tournament, the indian national championship *would also count as one of the mandatory 50+ player tournaments* for a player contending for a FIDE Circuit spot in the Candidates. To give an idea of how many circuit points one could earn if most of the top players took part, Fabiano Caruana earned 25 points for first place this year (TAR 2727.25) from the US Championships. This has made a huge difference to his circuit chance this year. And he also earned 22.68 last year (TAR 2726.75) from the US Championships. It's very concerning that such things were not taken note of much earlier this year and communicated clearly to the players. It's imperative that the chess authorities in India take note of this and work on rectifying this for next year and beyond. If there are hurdles in raising the prestige/level of the National Championship, then those hurdles must be overcome. To me, this appears as too good of an opportunity for the Indian Chess players to pass up.

Shocking oversight indeed! I recall Vidit mentioning this and also acknowledging that top players “weren’t aware” of this at the time!!!?? I am reluctant to say this but it is indeed a lack of awareness and AICF, players themselves, related chess media (including CBI who could update public about such events) and Vishy himself (as FIDE deputy president and an Indian Super GM) are responsible for the lack of communication and for missing an invaluable opportunity. Players like Nihal could have benefited from this!

You should have installed some giant TV screens in the middle on either side of playing hall.. those with refraction problems can’t view the boards displayed on stage and follow the games.. money wasted..

Ya the ticket was soooo expensive. I could've just followed the games online and saved my time of traveling and money for the ticket.

You know one time payment doesn't level the amount TN govt has spent. They gave that too too late. Developing an ecosystem costs way more and not just that I have read that TN govt in general pays players in need. Organising events costs a lot. They organised Chennai Grandmasters just so that Gukesh can get one last chance to qualify and that gave Arjun too one last chance to qualify for Candidates although he couldn't but if he had won that he would have qualified. There was a long article on Chessbase India I read early this year on how Vishy and others met govt and proposed this which thry instantly agreed to and that is a big deal.

Gukesh is very strong and deserves the opportunity! But, the problem is that Ding is not the WCC 🚨🤬👎 because he did not win the Candidates nor a match against Magnus Carlsen the True Champion! 💡🏆🤬

So? The TN govt made Chennai Grand Masters possible last year specifically for Gukesh to qualify at the last minute - a whole new FIDE tournament organised just for Guki - can you imagine how important that is given that he has now qualified to play in World Championships? TN also helped organised Olympiad and supported every venture in chess in Chennai including WACA. This consistent support is what matters not what you’ve pointed out.
