I've been to GUM twice. First time in 2000 and the second time 2002. It looks like a lot of renovation has been completed, as the place looks fantastic. I need to go back again.

We have an indoor shopping mall in the north-east of England, called the MetroCentre, but it's nowhere near as beautiful as GUM. It would be a joy to visit GUM just for the architecture alone ... and such a beautiful outdoor facade!

Man, how things have changed. I'm a black man (LOL) and went on a tour to Moscow and Leningrad (St. Peterburg) in 1981 when it was the Soviet Union. The tour was with American Express out of New York City. At that time, the passengers took TWA airlines to Finland in order to transfer to Aeroflot. There were no direct flights to Russia at that time, and they did not stamp your passport. I remember visiting GUM. While the architecture was beautiful, the inside didn't look anything like this. As a matter-of-fact, everybody stood in one long line to make their purchases. Leningrad, and particularly the Hermitage was astoundingly beautiful. I only had one problem when I tried to bring out a couple of Rubles, I was stopped by immigrations, and the money was confiscated. What a difference a day makes.

GUM absolutely small on the area. Its value that it, probably, the oldest department store in the world. It exists since the 17th century. However, it burned and was reconstructed. As it stands its building exists since the 19th century.

In 1982, an unforgettable experience visiting Moscow as part of a US scientific delegation. We had some free time, and of course visited GUM in Red Square. I must say that the present day GUM is very elegant by comparison. I recall purchasing quantities of a delicious black tea at the GUM of 1982. At that time I could speak and read Russian, which made a huge difference. My three US colleagues had no Russian...a memorable time in Moscow USSR 1982.

This is more like what would be a mall here in America: lots of separate retailers inside one building. It looks like a really NICE one, though. I love the exterior of the building, our malls don't look nearly as nice from the outside. They tend to just be these big, boxy things. But what we call a department store here is one large SINGLE retailer and different kinds of merchandise are sold in different parts of the store.
@nrrork10 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I'd like shopping there, though. I'm afraid of heights, so those walkways and escalators all out in the open like that would freak me out. I could walk across one of those walkways if I HAD to, but I wouldn't enjoy it! There was this doctor in Detroit that I had to visit a few times whose office as on the top floor of a building that had those walkways. I just looked straight ahead and tried to mentally block out my peripheral vision. The building also had a glass elevator: there's a special place in Hell for whoever first invented those!

The facade is beautiful as it lies on one side of Red Square across from the main part of the Kremlin. They've done a great job of making it a premiere mall with premium stores known in the West. During Soviet times, it was a complete disappointment and had venues that resembled a flea market. The closest thing we have in America are the old train stations converted to food markets and stores.

Торговый Дом ГУМ ... GUM Return to the gloss and gloria beautiful, once the largest department store in Europe. with an area of about 75,000 Square meters and more than 100 years of history at this point, we want to commemorate these men Alexander Pomeranzew and Vladimir Shukhov. and many many more... by the way ... the ancient Romans had such department stores already thank Sergey & Sergey for this beautiful impressions of the neoclassical architecture ;-)

WoOoW ... Ya gotta LOVE Royalty !!! I think I have seen some malls like that in Vegas, but just a few stores then it changes. And the East has architecture like that but not THAT BIG! That place certainly is very special and unique, its soo HUGE!

Great job guys, as always! Really beautiful place, and we appreciate you sharing this with us. However, HUMOR ALERT: Freeze at 4:28 go to full screen, and look at the name of the ladies clothing store in the upper left of the screen. Note: it's probably only funny if you are really familiar with American slang and past 50 years old, but then it's pretty funny! I swear I mean no offense, but that is hilarious! Still, love the whole video!! Thank you.

This has a slight simularity to Mall Of America in the us. Again I love the archetecture, wondered if the telephone dispay was permanent or temporary. It was a nicce addition. That is difinitely a place to hang and enjoy during cold weather. And maybe nice and cool during the warmest weather. The walkway bridges and food court on the third floor blended in very well.

I am enjoyed to see everything is Moscow, if possible, please show us the equivalence like this mall in Ufa, where is the real Russia. There is a "Sino-USSR Friendship Department Store" in the city of Wuhan, where I am living, during 1950's and 1990's. It is the # 1 department store in town for so long until demolished and replaced with high-rises. However there are still some Tsar buildings and Khrushchyoka left as preserved historical buildings.

Are you flying and floating at 04:21 ? It looks cool! Well, I think most shops in big shopping malls are expensive. Is there a $1 (35 rubles) menu in that place like at American McDonalds? I spent most of my money on the airplane ticket and college tuition.
