The Gumball Rally is a 1976 film about a coast-to-coast road race. It was inspired by the actual Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash run held by Brock Yates that inspired several other movies, like Cannonball with David Carradine, also from 1976. The main difference is while Cannonball is an action film, The Gumball Rally is a comedy, just like the later series of Cannonball movies starring Burt Reynolds and many others. The Gumball Rally is often considered better and less infantile[citation needed] compared to the later, star-studded exploitations of The Cannonball Run, which even copied the running gags of the police man chasing the racers through the whole USA. Though Gumball Rally's entire premise is copied from the actual cross country race the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash which was created and organized by Brock Yates who wrote the script for The Cannonball Run film.
The Gumball Rally stars Raul Julia, Michael Sarrazin, Norman Burton, Gary Busey, John Durran, Tim McIntire, and Susan Flannery, and was directed and co-written by Chuck Bail.

I put a Ford Racing 427 small block in my kit from Ultimate Classic Cars. It's based on a 351W Boss block that has been bored and stroked to 427 cubic inches. With an Edelbrock Pro Flo 4 multi-port fuel injection and premium pump gas, it should put out 550hp.

I wonder. Is this the same river bottom that they filmed the Eleanor chase scene from the 2000 Gone in 60 Seconds in? I totally love this movie. I grew up watching it on an old VHS recorded off HBO and as soon as I saw it on DVD I bought it. Gumball was one of those movies you could tell the actors had a blast making and really had fun being part of. The 70s and 80s were definitely the era for quality car films and movies in general. These movies are epic conpared to most of what's on today.

The director of the movie said he paid for the extra Ferrari with his own money. He regrets not keeping it now. He had no idea what those were going to be worth today. I would of kept it! My article is from a 2006 issue of Motor Trend Classic. Even features the Delorean DMC-12! Love it!

Two Cobras and two Daytonas were used in the film. They were all genuine, too: There were no replicas of these cars produced in 1976. The two Cobras used were chassis numbers CSX3255 and CSX3243. Both of these cars are restored today. The Daytonas were chassis 14829 (currently at the Peterson museum) and 16467 (wrecked in production, rebuilt, reused and wrecked again permanently in the film "A Star is Born").

@Phantom713Hawk .I think the movie was a take on the the Ferrari vs, Ford compitition inthe late 60's,when Carol Shebly beat Ferrari at its own game with a 1-2-3 win at LeMans, thats why the cobra won in the movie,But that Ferrari Daytona was the s#^* back in its day.cost new in 1971:$27,000 cost today,im concourous condition: over 1.5 million dollars. That Cobra rocks to at a recent cost some where near a million dollars for an original 427

It's a 1972 Daytona Spider. I have an article from Motor Trend with both the Cobra and the Daytona from the movie running down the LA river basin in 2006. I can't believe they would take such nice a valuable cars in that mud and water! Cool race though. Hearing both of those engines run is like music to my ears! I saw a red 1972 Daytona Spider sell for $1.5 million on tv.

The 289 Cobra was an all English car. The 427 Cobra was completely redesigned to hold the new big block 427 engine. The car was widened 6 inches for wider tires and a new 4 inch diameter steel tube frame was built to hold it all together. They made 51 big blocks in 1965 and a total of 356 cars ending on December 27th 1967. I also had the pleasure of meeting Carroll Shelby back in 1980 at a car show. Good times.

actually its interesting in that Brock Yates wrote the ""Cannonball Run" movie and drove in the real event IN A DAYTONA! with Dan Gurney as the ringer rather than "FRANCO" . HE HAS VOWED TO NEVER SEE GUMBALL.The stuff in gumball is closer to fact (van with 200 gals, cobra, ferreri, porsche) than cannonball except name "Cannonball Baker Sea to Sea Memorial Trophy Dash" is the name of the real events from the 1970's

The Dino and Daytona were built during the same time period. The Daytona had a longer frame and stronger suspenison to accomidate the 4.4 liter 365 hp V-12. The Dino was smaller and used a 195 hp V6. Both were completely different cars. After both cars ceased production came the 308 series. The 308 and 328 used modified versions of the Dino platform.

Google "Boss 429 Mustang." That's the car, and, yes, they made around 500 of them. Ford built429 Boss Hemi engine to run in the Torinos that were racing in NASCAR, and to make the engine legal Ford needed to make a minimum of 500 production cars for homologation rules. They decided to stuff the 429 into the Mustang and contracted Kar Kraft to do the build. They had to do some modifications to the Mustang to fit the wide hemi in the engine bay.

05gtdriver Yeah i had my own car lot at 21 y/o selling classic & muscle cars & ran a huge mustang parts yard. I feel bad for all the youngins who never got to see one, hear it run etc... I used to judge mustang shows (69-70 & svo stangs), once in a blue moon a real A/C cobra would show up to stop the show cold. Most owners didnt like to drive them too much, cuz they would cause accidents & be mobbed everywhere they went. I only ever got a ride in a 289 cobra, but was sooo fun. I went to 25 anniv SAAC (best EVER) show in western MA, met MISTER shelby! he almost ran over me twice speeding in a golf cart, he said "i'll get ya!" i said "it would be my priviledge sir". RIP MR Shelby

05gtdriver back in my 20's it was the 80's, thats when ppl had money to buy toys & you could still get them reasonably. I remember trying to sell a 68 1/2 R code hollman & moody prepped pace car Cougar with 80 K miles for $11 K, no takers. Now collectors would cut you for the chance to own it for 10 times that lol. Everyone would agree, The world got a lil less cool when he passed. There was no one like him, he is missed

That Cobra sounds so bad ass and has the motor to back it up. Ferrari never had a chance

Personally I wondered if they used different cars, on and off, in the whole scene. Check out the grille of the Cobra at the beginning. It octagonal (?) and missing a drive light, later it's oval with both drive lights. Same thing with the Ferrari at 1:55... One drive light, later two *hmmm*

“Just keep going on Sepulveda”. Apparently referring to Sepulveda Blvd in Long Beach. No clue on the other one.

In some shots the Cobra had damage others not so what was the story on that were they having too much fun and bit it? Patched it up and kept going? I think yes lol

It's called 'Continuity' In a film where it's really important, you wouldn't even notice. Such things happen because movies are made out of sequence, so that (for the viewer) cause doesn't equal effect, and vice versa. It's why multitudes of websites exist to highlight such things. I doubt it was a case of anyone having too much fun, more a case of subtle accidents that lead to someone deciding it wasn't in the budget to 'restore' vehicles back to the standard they were when filming began.
