Gumboot was originated by miners in South Africa as a form of entertainment between shifts, whilst living in compounds. The dance embodies the unity and strength of the miners during a time of apartheid, as well as their indomitable spirit. The opening song is in Ndebele, sung by Zimbabwean miners on the train to South Africa to begin their contracts in the mines.

Gumboot was how they communicated in the mines. Whether they wear jeans or not doesn’t matter.

According to Wikipedia (?), there was a S. African student at UWC Pearson decades ago, who taught a bunch of students how to gumboot dance. So to honor him and the culture, they have kept a dance troupe going. Dunno how much you know about the UWCs, but they place an emphasis on intercultural understanding and usually have a very international student population.

But it's south African dance which started in the 1800s during apartheid as a means of communication by miners

If they were born and raised in South Africa then it's their culture too..infact the advantage with their genarations' culture is the ability to choose all of them😃..stop hating Tom.

That's the beauty of human nature, you give to others what they don't have and take what you don't have. Nothing wrong about that. In Xhosa we say "intaka yakha ngoboya benye" (isiXhosa asitolikwa)
