The Gumby outfit (rolled-up trousers, braces, cardigan, knotted hanky on head) is the classic cliché image of the British working man at the seaside. It was often used on cartoon postcards - a weedy little bloke usually accompanied by a very large, dominant wife. In the 50s and 60s there really were guys like that. Some Python fans still have themselves photographed as Gumby on the beach. The Lancet, btw, is the monthly journal of the British Medical Association.

That is because all of them had their own style and strenghts. Eric Idle was good with wordplay, puns, and songs. Jones was all about timing and playing the commom man in contrast with silliness, Chapman was pure insanity and shock value. Palin and Cleese were the best overall performers, Palin went for wits, Cleese for silliness. Also I forgot to add Gilliam to the list, I'd say a Gumby of him would be right after Chapman. He was good doing "dumb" characters, of the little he actually did.

Idle and Cleese, off the top of my head, also had a flair for beginning certain blocks of dialogue with quiet reserve and suddently ratcheting up to hyperdramatic bloviation (in the case of Idle playing the defendant in the Richelieu courtroom sketch) and Cleese *slowly* going from zero to Mach Twelve anger-wise in the Architect Sketch.
