Actually, Vocaloids are made by real people, as well as the songs they sing. Each Vocaloid has a voice provider (Ex. Megumi Nakajima is Gumi's voice provider), and Vocaloids have "Voice banks" where people use a program to make a Vocaloid song (Or make a cover of an already existing song, like shown in this video). So the program is computer generated, but the people behind the Vocaloids and the people who make the songs they sing are very real.

Actually, Vocaloids have voice actors who originally created their voices. Gumi's voice actress was Megumi Nakajima, which is funny considering the Vocaloid's name is 'Gumi', two letters off of her first name. You can't generate a voice as well as you can pay a voice actress to record herself singing syllables. Look it up, Vocaloids ARE voiced by humans, just syllable-by-syllable as opposed to song-by-song.

The people who CREATE Vocaloids gather voice samples from REAL voice actors, sometimes famous voice actors, such as SeeU's voice actor (I don't remember her name) and Gackt.. Nothing about them is computer generated, except for the songs which merge and smoothen the samples in the program.
