I JUST REALIZED I PUT VOCALOID COVER IN THE TITLE OUT OF HABIT OMG. All this talk about how Miku NT sounds and I still put the wrong title. Maybe it was MY brain that exploded. The way Miku NT is just flipping the bird at Miku's legacy. Honestly SynthV is the natural progression of things Crypton PIONEERED. Everyday I am so confused about what Crypton is doing.

absolutely true, her voice is almost…hollow? Like, I had to do a massive amount of mixing just to get her to sound like she has SOME energy to her. it’s a huge long shot and will likely never ever happen, but could you imagine if we got a miku for synthv? I think i mentioned in another reply that it seems like Crypton just sits there and lets miku make them boatloads of cash and that actually DEVELOPING HER VOICE is just…not a priority for them anymore. It makes me so sad to see miku in this state but I’m so happy that SynthV seems to be picking up the slack with the tech in general, and I’m excited to see what they bring to the table in the next few years!

Wow, Miku NT can't deal with a fast peaced song, she sounds like a CV UTAU with a bad oto.ini, glad to see Gumi got a better treatment with SynthV and aimed for a better engine. Is Miku still the only public voicebank for Piapro? Because... How many years until Cryptonloids get realised or cancelled? It's been a lot and the only existing NT voicebank I ever see being released is Miku. Although at this point I prefer them being cancelled and go back to Vocaloid, because Luka and Len sounds like Miku in Pjsk

Yes, Miku is the only NT publicly available. She does have two appends (that came as free updates), Dark and Whisper, but they honestly both sound pretty much the same and even more muffled if anything. Personally I wouldn’t mind if Rin NT was actually released, because tbh she’s the only one I’ve heard who can consistently sound halfway decent. Len just sounds BAD though. Like I heard him on a pjsk song (I think it was Bug but I can’t remember) and I had to pause the game and rant to my friend about what they’ve done to the poor boy. And Luka just sounds like Miku if she was a duck. I really think they should just scrap the NT project altogether and start something new, or even consider moving to another synth (Miku SynthV anyone? 👀) because like you said, it’s been YEARS without so much as a teaser for either more Miku appends or the other voicebanks. It sucks too because poor Meiko and Kaito have been stuck on V3 :(

Also THANK YOU for mentioning Gumi. So many people in other comment sections and around the internet say SynthV ruined her and she doesn’t sound like Gumi anymore but I just can’t see it. She lost the Vocaloid engine noise but that is 100% still Gumi. I can see the argument with Teto because she does sound more mature than her UTAU, but Gumi sounds exactly like how they always wanted her to sound, as close to a realistic depiction of her VP as possible.

Love this video! I'm a somewhat old-time VOCALOID fan returning to the fandom after many years away, it's really amazing seeing the advancements in vocal synthesis technology and how much has changed in the past few years (Crypton and Yamaha's separation, the development of SynthV), it's been so fascinating to me and this is a great demonstration of the current state of things.

Thank you so much! And yeah, I was never in the fandom really but I was aware of Miku and had heard some songs, so when I first heard some of the synthv and cevio voices i was absolutely shocked. It’s too bad that Yamaha seems to not care about Vocaloid anymore, and Crypton just uses Miku for mass marketing (and presumably project sekai, which really is just marketing for piapro NT itself). It makes me so happy that vocal synths haven’t lost relevance, and that the tech just keeps getting better. something about them inspires people to use them in amazing and creative ways and i love it! Sorry for the long reply, I seem to be incapable of not writing a whole essay when I type 😭

@fearofevrything That's what happens when a company cares more about leeching off of the success of one of their characters instead of actually putting effort into making good voicebanks for people to use in their songs. I don't believe it's the tuning that makes the voice bad (I actually quite like your tuning, especially for GUMI!), but it's just that the voicebank is bad in general; it's way too nasally and is really hard to make sound good.

No no you are ABSOLUTELY correct, we’re on the same page here 100%. I was just so so sad to hear the quality of the voice in general. The miku you hear here is heavily mixed and tuned and STILL sounds like this. You should hear her before any editing, it’s not good. Even whoever does tuning and mixing for pjsk covers (aka the closest thing i can think of for an “official miku sound” can’t make her sound as nice as V4x and older. Some of the things I hear from this game that is supposedly ADVERTISING piapro NT are just downright offensive to miku’s legacy. Poor miku, you deserve much better than this :(

Believe me, I love Project Sekai and play the game myself, but I just can't hear the sekai covers of songs without wanting to throw my phone against the wall (unless if the human singers overpower the poorly tuned voicebanks enough where I can barely hear them.) There's a reason why I almost always choose the Virtual Singer version. There's also a reason why you shouldn't use crappy voicebanks and have people who actually know what they're doing tune them instead of hiring a random employee from the art department to do it.

@@shuichisaihara1174 literally so true. there are a few of the additional, virtual singer only covers that feel like they actually have care put into them (the rin version of hated by life itself comes to mind) but those are so few and far between that it’s even worse. because it’s POSSIBLE to get them to sound halfway decent, but they just don’t care usually. it really feels like pjsk team just wants ppl to throw money at them for those sweet sweet crystals and ignore the actual garbage they put out. (and somehow here i am still doing exactly that 😭)

Ahhhh thank you! Yeah I absolutely adore the snappiness of this song, so honestly the pronunciation and cadence of the lyrics was almost as important for me to get right as the tuning itself was. That’s one thing I like about Piapro; the EVEC is integrated very well into it and Miku NT has an “Accent” option that helps her emphasize certain notes and I think it worked perfectly here.

So honestly I don’t think I would hate it personally if like, it was an entirely new and separate voice and not Miku. It just doesn’t feel like Miku to me, but the nasal quality and airy sound isn’t bad on its own. I think people are more upset that she went from this bright tone with some decent strength to an airy, nasally voice. I do think NT can be used very nicely for certain types of songs, but she’s not nearly as versatile as V4X is/was.

You should listen to some of her Project Sekai songs. All of the original/commisioned songs in the game use NT (including prototypes of the other Cryptonloids which people think they just turned into the new SP voicebanks) and some of them are BAD, especially the older ones. Praying that the update makes her sound better, I'm cautiously optimistic...

I just want to share my opinion after reading the comments here : I'll cut Miku NT some slacks because 1. She'll still in her early stage 2. Crypton is developing voicebanks from scraps, on their own, and I do have hope that they'll improve in the future. While I appreciate SynthV and other vocal synth techs that succeed from Vocaloid, I do respect Crypton's decission to preserve Miku's roboticness instead of making her more realistic a.k.a turning her into Saki Fujita. I do agreed that they have made some very questionable decissions over the last few years thought, Piappro being one of them, it's impossible to know what is actually going on in Crypton's HQ unless we have an insider, so I'll just hope for the best. Multiple Vocal synths have risen for the possition of the Queen, but Miku is and always will be the number one princess. Nothing will ever change that.

You know what? This is a very reasonable take. Thank you for giving your input~ I've said in other comments that I don't HATE Miku NT, I'm just a little disappointed. I really just wish that they would give her more care. It's been YEARS since she's been updated, and we have almost zero news on any kind of development past "there's something coming". Maybe I'm just cynical, but it really feels like they're just letting Miku print money for them. Although, you do have a point with not killing her roboticness, I think a Miku that's extremely realistic by default would be even more hated than NT. I will say though, it's incredibly easy to get certain SV voicebanks to sound robotic and kinda noisy like a traditional Vocaloid. And on your last point, I 100% agree. Miku will always be #1, and at the end of the day I do believe any Miku is a good Miku, it's just that some are better than others imo. I really do hope Crypton is able to turn it around for NT. Some of the newer pjsk songs with her actually sound fairly good, so if that's because of new development rather than them having more experience tuning her now, then I hope we get to see that on the commercial end soon.

It's true but also this is my first time mixing/tuning her, so I do also think I could've made her a little clearer. I wouldn't say this is the greatest example of NT in general but she is NOT my favorite to say the least. I will say I do have the same problem with her V4x bank, where she kinda sounds like she's singing with cotton in her mouth, but I have practice with her V4 bank and the V6 & Piapro editors, so it's easier to mitigate that. yes! all of my synthv voices are the full versions (aka not lite) and I use synthv pro! I’m not sure but I think she might have a free version? If you’re interested definitely look on the synthv wiki or something, they usually show whether a voice bank has a lite version or only a paid one.
