Gums usually harden after the complete loss of teeth, both because it more closely hugs the bone, but also because the actual chewing with no teeth hardens the gum meat. This also happens in a more diminished form if the person wears dentures, which necessitates lining the dentures with additional material as the gums change shape. Failing to do so could cause pressure sores.

When they talked about degloving, it reminded me of a movie that traumatised me as a child causing me to fear garden gloves as it was an (evil) magic garden glove that when you take them off, you have no skin but if you put them back on and took them out again, your skin would be back or something. I don't know exactly what happens, all I remember was being a child and seeing s movie where someone's hand comes out of a glove with no skin. This was back when Blockbuster was a thing I believe.
