Great video. One suggestion - something I do as the last measure of cleaning - lightly wipe down your Talon grip with rubbing alcohol and a clean patch or rag. It cleans the grip, plus renews that original feel to the rubber.

A little tip when putting the slide back on. Don't leave the takedown lever fully out. Move it a tiny bit inwards, so that when you rack the slide it automatically locks in the take down lever. It's a bit easier than locking the slide back first, locking the takedown lever, and then releasing the slide. Hope this makes sense!

Good video. I have an 11 round 40. Cleaning is a little different and it would be great to see a deep clean which this gun needs. Spent a lot of time however and wow was it dirty.. great instruction. I wish someone would do a video that shows this much slower and in greater detail. Thanks

I see now that the trigger disconnect is the source of the problem. Because of that trigger disconnect damn "feature" of the california compliant version you have to push the seer down first to take the slide off. That sux

ZFlyingVLover I have a CA compliant shield as well... Didn't understand how easy it was for BT... I just insert an empty magazine and then it slid off just like BT showed it... CA compliant weapons need to have the magazine installed. Its easier than trying to push down the seer....and you save your fingers from getting pinched.... Try it...

Curious why you did not move the sear deactivation lever downward 90 degrees like it says in the M&P manual (page 24)? That's the little yellow piece you can see when you look down into the mag well after locking the slide back. I always do that to mine, but wonder if it makes any difference on reassembly?

Sidney Patin Not all Shield's have the take down lever for some reason. My wife and I have both had ours for about 3 years and neither one has the lever. My guess is maybe his doesn't either. Not sure, like I said just a guess.

His gun has the yellow takedown lever. If you watch closely around 2:40 to 2:45 in slow motion you will see it. Watch how he does it. After flipping the slide lock lever he lets the slide almost all the way back down while pulling the trigger and when it dry fires the slide will then come off because the pistol has been decocked, which is the function of the yellow decocking lever.

Just let the slide back down after you flip up the take down lever, then move the slide into firing position and pull the trigger as if you were dry firing it. I keep my hand on the slide and when I feel it released I just slide it off. It makes no difference when you reassemble it.

Clean after every time out on the range or not? It's not absolutely necessary, especially if the weapon is just to have around or for show. Personally, I don't want to rely on a dirty weapon when I need it the most, in a defensive situation.

only thing is though for me anyway the dirtiest spot always seems to be around the firing pin. lots of carbon on my shield and 1911. i use hoppes solvent around it and no oil.

I use Tri-flow to lube my guns, works best for anywhere metal touches metal. Locks, hinges, bike chains, gun rails etc...

I took my shield to the range today and shot 200 rounds. When i cleaned it i did oil the striker pin and the slide. Would that be a problem??

I don't know if anyone has ever answered you...but it just seems to be the place with the most buildup....so oiling it would catch more...in return having to deep clean it more often....in the owners manual it has seven contacts to oil...two spots front and back on the barrel, two spots on the front rails, two spots on the back rails, one spot where the trigger mechanism initiates the pin....there's like a swivel hinge in there..

wtf i just bought a shield and i was showen that the only way to take apart the gun was to pull the slide back drop the slid release and pull down that little yellow lever in the magazine channel and all you did was just pulled the trigger doing it that way is so much easier than fighting to catch that stupid little lever

+Evak Blades they have that lever in there so you dont have to dry fire it. But ya its easier just to dry fire it. Its just a way for s&w to cover there asses if someone shoots themselves while disassembling it.

Haha! The first I thing I noticed was how he was able to do that. Unfortunately, my version of the Shield has a magazine safety. You cannot fire it without a magazine in there. If you hate having to find a tool to pull down that lever, you can: 1. Clear the pistol 2. Insert an EMPTY magazine 3. Rack and close the slide 4. Point in a safe direction 5. Pull the trigger 6. Release the magazine You should be able to move the slide forward at this point. Please note the emphasis on having an empty magazine in there. Please note my emphasis on making sure your pistol does not get a live round in the chamber (steps 1 & 2).

Mel C That's weird. Mine says, 'Caution - capable of firing with magazine removed' right on the slide. Mine is a 9mm w/o a thumb safety. The first time I took it down I used the yellow lever. Once I figured out it works just like a Glock, I've never touched that yellow lever since. Lol.

Good basic video but carbon builds up by the striker as well and left unchecked eventually you could have serious issues. People should not avoid that area all together thats a area that say every 3rd cleaning should get some birchwood casey " gun scrubber " down it than a little dry lube so it does not attract any fouling just my 2 cents.great vid other than that.

I have the .40 Shield, I've read the manual about cleaning and lube. I understand not to use a massive amount, and I understand that carbon is the enemy or semi-autos. But, not having enough oil in the rails, front top portion of the barrel, top front portion of the chamber housing, and some oil in the inside slide near the safety plunger area could cause some issues. Gun create a lot of friction when used, and, due to the recoil and forces exerted by the handgun, oil does come out of the firearm during use due to friction and force. It seems to me that applying an amount of oil that seems like it could barely keep anything properly lubed seems like it would be hard on the gun in the long run. It almost seems like you used none at all. Heat and carbon are enemies of all firearms, but, thats just how I clean and oil my guns. Not too much, not too little.

This is helpful thanks, however after I took mine apart and put it back together while the slider was locked back I noticed the barrel seemed loose. Is this normal and I just didn't notice it before or did I put it back together incorrectly

The barrel will be a little loose. That's okay. If you notice, it actually will move and angle down when you rack the slide, in order to help chamber the next round. Unlike a Hi-Point, the barrel is not pinned to the receiver.

Reem M could be some oil clogging or even a small piece of debris.The American Gun Institute cleans guns with Simple Green And hot water. Take the gun apart and toss all the parts in. Let it soak for 5/10 minutes. Take it out scrub with tooth brush. Rinse with hot water and dry with clean towel and hair dryer. Guns do not need a lot of oil.

I noticed, you didn't lower the sear deactivation lever prior to rotating the take down lever and removing the slide, as is recommended in the manual. Your reason for this, please? Own the same gun as well as the compact version. The sear deactivation is a pain in the ass. The Dude safety checked the pistol twice. Much easier to just pull the trigger to release the slide. Just like him I'm a trigger puller as well.

Manual states that only for safety reasons. My then M&P9c came with a tool, but not the shield so it's easier to just pull the trigger, just make sure it's safety checked first. As far as lubrication, it doesn't take much lube to lube the gun and the coating on the rail will wear off regardless of how much lube you put on there.

Philip Beal Get with the current times and for safety reasons you are NEVER better off having to pull the trigger. It's violating the safety rules and invites a ND, ask any Glock-fool. Pulling the trigger to strip is rapidly becoming a thing of the past unless you are a Glockhole. And it's not a PITA at all to use the sear deactivation lever- you just need an adequate tool to assist in the process.

Nice video , I'm a new mp shield owner.. Took to range once only put 50 rounds through it .. Is it overkill to clean it after every use ? They should work even if they are dirty correct ? All the stories about glocks working well when tortured just seems like overkill to polish after every use but I'm no expert just a thought ?

I'll just chime in here and say i use frog lube on all my firearms and it works fantastic.I highly recommend it, so much easier to clean without all the solvents.No more hoppe's or break free.Check out CrucibleArms 2 part video on cleaning and lubrication.He's the reason i switched.Hope this helps.

BlindTom61 lock the slide back, push the takedown lever down, release the slide back forward, pull the trigger and the slide will come right off. The yellow lever just pushes the sear up so the striker will not catch on it. You can do the same thing by pulling the trigger.
