In Switzerland, there are 3 millions guns/ for a population of 8 millions. Shooting is a tradition here. With a simple 50 Euros permit, you can buy 3 guns (handgun, shotgun, rifle, even full auto). No need to be member of a shooting society, no safe needed. When you finish the army, you can keep the swiss assault rifle Sig 550 in 5.56 at home, you can have the old swiss assault rifle Sig 510 in 7.5, too. If you keep these rifles at home, you must make every year mandatory military shootings. You go to the range, they give you free military ammo, and you shoot, they check the rifles, and everybody is happy. Many swiss have the military rifles/handguns from their grandfather, father, uncle, and many of these rifles are no more registered. With the amount of guns around, Switzerland has one of the lowest crime rate of the world.

+Jon Kim Yes but what he didn't tell you is that Switzerland also has extremely high levels of health and education and low levels of poverty. Better on those measures than the United States. Drug policy is also very different from that of the United States, meaning that social issues are very different. The prevalence of guns is not factor in daily life. Not at all.

@dnmack1
@dnmack1 9 жыл бұрын
SuperSupermanX1999 Having a border with Mexico means that it's a simple matter to smuggle guns across the border so criminals will always be able to get them. For some reason, the drug cartels aren,t battling on the streets of the US.
@SuperSupermanX1999
@SuperSupermanX1999 9 жыл бұрын
Dave Yeah because all criminals are serious enough about their crime that they'll be willing to approach the black market and buy from the cartels before burgling someone. . The drug cartels aren't battling on the streets of the U.S. because they do all of their work in Mexico. Obviously. The U.S. has its own street gangs, and plenty of them such as the New York mafia, so that argument doesn't really work.
@dnmack1

SuperSupermanX1999 The Mexican drug cartels smuggle drugs into the US. Having people operating in the US would be(and is) useful to them, so that argument does work.

In the last 20 years the US crime rate (us gun crime rate too) has dropped by over 45%. In the mean time gun ownership has increased. The US now has more guns than people. So you tell me, of guns cause crime, why did the crime rate drop as guns went up? I am in Canada. We see very similar statistics here. Since 19993 the crime rate has dropped by more than 40% while gun ownership has increased drastically. I would say it probably doubled in the last 15 years. My gun range had only a 100 members 15 years ago. They now have over 900 and not accepting members. Around Canada the situation is the same everywhere. Gun ranges are maxed out whereas they were struggling 15-20 years ago.

mulletjocks totally agree mate, and I particularly like the fact that you recognize the fact we no longer have firearm rights in Australia, rather firearm privileges. Shut up and stay in your POS neutered country and stay out of America. Australia and the uk are so full of smug people who think they are soooo much better. I promise you that your fear of guns will bite you people in your ass. Do 5 minutes of research about crime in your countries and you will find that your view on lower gun crime is.....wait for it.....wrong! Have fun being victims. BTW, im proud to be a yank, although I live in the south of the US, in my opinion this is the best place in the world to live. You don't know what true freedom is until you've lived here. Regardless of what you may think, I'd rather take my chances in a society where we have the freedom to bear arms and defend ourselves, not only from criminals but, also from any enemy both foreign and domestic. Governments like yours treat there citizens like children, we here are NOT children or sheep. Here, we are men, we are citizens not subjects, we can defend ourselves without having to wait for "authorities". So continue sticking your noses in the air and throwing BS cherry picked stats my way, it wont change reality. It's a damn shame that entire nations like Australia and the UK would be willing to let themselves be disarmed in such a way. You all just bent over and let your government rape you.

***** Not really, there was a guy on a train in Melbourne and the coppers were going around asking if anyone had weapons and a man said he had like a 5cm pocket knife for self defence and the cops said that he can't use it. On the Queensland police force site it says that if someone invades your house you need to haggle them and talk to them and you can't use force or you will be charged.
@corporateevolution4031
@corporateevolution4031 10 жыл бұрын
bubbles1583 The Queensland police force actually says that physical self defense should not be your only or first resort. They list, escaping, negotiating, cooperating, calling for assistance, screaming, calling the police and physical self defense as valid responses. There are a large variety of reasons that are allowed for carrying knives, but their advice is written expressly aimed at keeping the fear of violence in perspective. The other group of people carrying knives are people looking for trouble. The Queensland site expressly says "You have the right to physically defend yourself with reasonable force" as allowed by the law. Carrying weapons purely due to your fears will likely escalate situations or lead to more violence.

@ddww4169

We didn't lose our "gun rights" - after Port Arthur there was simply a very widely held view amongst the Australian public that there was no need for semi-automatic long-arms to be in private hands. The push to remove semi-autos came from the public, not the Government - the State governments were initially unwilling and Howard was thought to be going out on a limb by pushing it, but it was actually hugely popular with the public. And by the way, semi-autos weren't "confiscated", they were bought back at good prices and then destroyed. A friend of mine was laughing about it, because he handed in an old semi-auto rifle and got enough from the government to buy a good new gun. And, apparently the number of guns has actually increased since the buyback. Hand guns have always been heavily regulated here, thank God, and it was the tightness of those regulations that probably saved my life one time.

There is a lot of bs on youtube but this has to top the cake haha. I have lived in Australia all my life. Yes people were pissed off having their guns taken away, but those very same people now agree it was for the good. This video looks about 20 years old an is sourced through gun enthusiasts. Take a simple survey in the city and then come back to me about how many people wan't guns back. Clicking the link I thought this would be some sort of sattire. Since port arthur we have had zero mass shootings whereas the US rate of mass shootings has sky rocketed.. all these statistics are made up, gun crimes dropped significantly. Americans trying to justify their fetish for guns is laughable at best. It's a nice feeling being able to walk through the street or going to school without the worry of being shot.. but I guess Americans wouldn't know what that feels like.. Lack of education is a huge factor amongst American gun enthusiasts, the phrase 'you cannot change the second amendment' or 'your invading my constitutional rights' is all too familiar, honestly splash some cold water on your face so you can wake yourself up. I agree with being able to defend yourself against a tyrant government but when your 'rights' were legislated it wasn't referring to high powered weapons. Oh and I almost forgot the classic, 'so should we ban all knives too' just take a step back and think about what your saying kids, can a knife do as much damage as a high powered assault rifle during school hours. The whole US obsession with guns and maintaining the 'hardcore' image is cringeworthy.

Not really a good argument, as there are plenty of Dixiecrats or Fox news viewers that are NRA members. 3.) Statism, the latest catchphrase. Though you called me a marxist earlier and they called for the abolition of the state. Statism is the opposite of anarchism, however I could see that Statism could be better than the world of Mad Max that some people want. Just because you say lots of things at once doesn't mean any of them are true.

tripleheshy What part of it do you want proven false? The crime stats quoted which aren't based on reality? Its fact that there are more registered gun owners now than in 1996. A large number of the guns handed in were legal under the new system but people wanted the money, this also includes the collectable firearms that the guy was crying about. There are also the elements of the discussion regarding Australia's constitution which Americans don't seem to understand. P.S. Obamacare is currently coming in under cost with premiums lower than projected.

Ive _never_ in all my life in Australia witnessed a single gun-related offense, and i dont know anybody who has. Guns are just a non-issue here, and have been ever since the gun buyback after Port Arthur Massacre. Our kids go to school without fear and that's a freedom i'd rather any day over being able to own an automatic assault rifle. And if i want to shoot a gun i can go to a shooting range, and farmers are free to get permits - everyones pretty happy. Also keep in mind that in the 20 years before Port Arthur there was 19 mass shootings. In the 20 years after Port Arthur there's been exactly 0. ZERO. That's FOUR DECADES of before & after to compare. America already has 1.12 guns since 2014 for every man woman and child and over 1 in 3 are owners, they've already TRIED the "more guns" part of the equation, but the "less crime" part is where? Where!?!? I fear the gun culture is just so heavily entrenched in America that they may be beyond the point of no return. :(

lol Don't believe the propaganda. We have had mass murders and plenty of them. 4 out of the 5 worst mass murders in the last 40 years have all happened since the gun reform. The odds of a firearm being used in a homicide as a percentage of all homicides has actually fallen steadily since the 60s. After the reform this simply followed what pre reform statistics would have predicted if the reform had never happened. There was no sudden or massive improvement. Assault, sexual assault, rubbery, armed robbery and kidnapping have all increased. Don't blindly believe the political spin. As with all such propaganda its designed to misinform you.

From what I can find, the trope about guns being more dangerous to their owners than miscreants seems to apply mostly to handguns. This makes sense for a variety of reasons. And really, the state's LAST job should be to protect people from themselves. If a person is stupid enough to mishandle their gun and gets themself killed in the process, that's their problem.

From a non-gun owning Australian citizen, to every American citizen, regardless of wether you own a gun or not. It's not about guns, it's about violence. When faced with violence, don't hide,fight back.As Shane would say, "..a gun is only a tool...a gun is as good or as bad as the man who uses it." As violent as Australian society can be, fighting back is becoming rare. It's being bred out of us by social engineers and do-gooders and politicians. At the café where most people were killed...

What your also not seeing is the fact that thesis old people are still alive to tell their tales after a home invasion. Which is a rare thing by the way here. 99% of people breaking into your home don't need a gun because the occupants don't have guns. Yes they get traumatised. Yes they might have a black eye but they are alive. Gun toting robber vs gun toting old person = disaster. I'm soooo glad we live in a place where there's pretty much no one I know that owns a firearm. Are u going to stop a criminal getting a gun? No of course not but the vast majority of them don't bother because there's just no need. But you guys will never get that.

We don't have a codified bill of rights, but we do have a few constitutional rights (fair trial, freedom of religion/speech, etc) plus a heap of what's called implied rights, which are basically rights that have been given through law or deemed to be in the spirit of the constitution by the high court (the equivalent of your supreme court). But yeah, whereas your constitution is on the whole a clearly written document which explicitly lays out how the country should function, ours is a mishmash of archaic sections and contradictory instructions.

Your statistics do not mean a thing because the US Constitution guarantees that our already existing right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed will always be protected, period! Australia was able to enforce the buy-back program because you have no such protections for your right to keep and bear arms. The whole buy-back program confuses me anyway because, did you actually buy your firearms from the government or from an independent dealer?

In the 18 years before the Port Arthur attack and passage of the NFA, Australians endured 13 mass shootings, claiming 112 lives. In the years following the bans and buybacks, firearm-related deaths plummeted, and mass shootings became largely a thing of the past. In 2012, the Guardian published new statistics drawn from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and Small Arms Survey showing only "30 homicides by firearm" annually in Australia, or "0.14 per 100,000 population." The U.S. statistics are bloated by comparison. Over the same period, Americans suffered "9,146 homicides by firearm," at a rate of 2.97 for every 100,000 people. Sixty percent of murders in the U.S. are committed with a gun, according to the Guardian, compared to 11.5% in Australia.

Recently on national television Mr. Howard was boasting about how proud he was about banning guns and his new gun laws. He got it wrong! He could've been proud if he would of save the life of all those people in Port Arthur, not proud of bringing in new gun laws restricting the freedom of law abiding citizens. Crime rate is much higher then ever before. Sorry to say but these all these events are happening under the Liberal Party, including the Lindt Cafe siege. Law abiding citizens, legal gun owners are not the problem in our country. We need to look deeper into the issues, but with honesty!

Your one-word response prompted me to look into it. It turns out that, all things being equal, you're *way* more likely to shoot someone by accident or in the heat of passion--unjustified shootings, in other words. But it's a general statistic, and I think most people who buy a firearm consider themselves careful, responsible gun owners--and the more responsible you are, the less likely you'll be to shoot someone by accident. (I don't know about the "heat of passion" thing; owning a gun does make murder as easy and instantaneous as pulling a trigger.) But there's no way to accurately create a data pool of "responsible" gun owners, so who can say? Consider suicide. Many people who want to kill themselves *do* go and get a gun for that purpose. So it's technically true to say people are more likely to shoot themselves than an intruder or attacker. I still think every sane adult without a violent criminal record should be allowed to have a gun if they choose.

If rights are intrinsic, it doesn't matter what the law says. The only thing laws can do in that instance is to take rights away. In this instance, we have very good reasoning and can decide rights based on rational thought. A right is anything that a person might want to do. The only valid reason to infringe on that right is if the individual is using their right, or is an imminent threat to use that right to harm others. Otherwise, we are in a situation where might makes right.

And that BS about a tyrannical government is ridiculous and stupid.
