The problem with a longsword is the same as with the club, you cannot swing it indoors. A short sword (a Gladius, a Cutlass) and a buckler shield, or a short word and a strong flashlight is much more effective in my humble opinion.

I really do have a one and a half hand Bastard Sword hanging on my Wall. Have trained to use it in full contact Battles for 6 years too :'D. @@freneticfanatic Yeah a gladius could be cool but I would opt for something with a smaller less heavy blade like a sax or a long dagger. @@blammblamm because everyone owns their own house, and has the money and time to install something to specifically conceal a weapon by the door. Apartments exist, and many people rent homes and don't have the option to make changes to the dwelling. Come off the tactical fortress pedestal and join us in reality, where leaving your shotgun by the front door is just a bad idea. Keep your defensive tools within reach or on you at all times. Personally, I just carry a little .38 around my place, and have a can of pepper spray in ever room,, so my tools are always on me when I'm at home. I'll take that over concealing it under a table by my door any day, because I can immediately react to a threat, as opposed to needing to get to a specific location to retrieve my defensive tools.

The best melee weapon for home-defence in my opinion is a spear. In my country guns are very hard to get and it is illegal to get a license for self-defence so alot of people rely on melee weapons. People make their own spears with a broom handle, kitchen knife and duct tape then place it beside them when they sleep. The spear is a perfect and unusual home defence weapon in my opinion because it is easy to thrust a spear in a hallway but it is difficult to swing a machete or a bat. It creates great distance which would he hard to close and it has been proven as one of the most effective weapons through history.

Sir, I've watched many of your wonderful and well thought out videos, and I am absolutely a fan of your work. My background is Taekwondo many-many years ago and later in my life (what I've come to believe is the more effective systems of Kali and Silat). From years of learning about anatomy and physiology and combining this knowledge with Kali and Silat, and understanding that the blade does not have to be large at all (however a very pointy and very sharp blade is always a good thing), and placement is also an extremely important thing. Combining knowledge, commitment to the defense, and training can absolutely be a devastating combination. There are many places on the human body where the puncture [with a jagged cut] does not have to be very-very deep at all to cause sufficient permanent damage to cause the attacker to stop what he is doing and wonder where his next breath is coming from, or wait....wait...I'm loosing consciousness due to blood loss...um...what...and then the lights go dark type of thing. I absolutely understand that no one is just going to let you do these things, but all I am saying is, if they are in your house and are going to kill you anyway, you absolutely have to do the things that you have been training to do for years and years, and you cannot hesitate, or your loved ones will absolutely be next. This mindset (from a front-line type of theater...I believe) is extremely necessary because these types of intruders in ones home ABSOLUTELY mean you harm (permanent harm), and I truly believe that hesitation can be the end of you and your loved ones. Commitment to an explosive defense (even if I am killed in the defense of my family) is super-super important. After all, what is the alternative, the annihilation of my family??? With these types of things in mind, my training over the many-many years has been very-very realistic and NOT point based.....at all...because in the real world, I'm well aware of the fact that you get ONE chance, and one chance only to save your loved ones (and this is NOT a [macho man] garbage thing ....at all). Peace, love, and happiness to you and your family, my brother. I love your videos, and may you always be well, sir.

@@HighSierraBob the best plan is the one where you have to use the least amount of energy such as using a gun however since most people find that scary and rather die than to kill might as well go with a flamethrower as everyone has that one family member that leaves their perfume everywhere and everyone should have a lighter so everyone basically has a flame thrower or fireball spitter if it is not a constant stream of Axe body spray Then again i am the type of person that has to explain to law enforcement why the intruder is laying there with napalm burns which napalm itself is not illegal to have or make and not hard at all just a stop to your local dollar store for ingredients...and using it on people well that one would probably be harder than using a Gun to define as self defense surprisingly and if not then that's just sad. Anyways chemistry class can be dangerous accidently especially if you did not intend for the finished product to be napalm I will just tell you now don't go to any sites to buy napalm it is better if you just make it yourself as 1 it's cheaper and 2 you actually know what you are getting. And for the love of god do not play mad scientist and find out a different way to make it as at that point you need to ask if you should not if you can and its crazy how 1 google search would tell you how to make the stuff and how a banana peel could make a nuclear reactor go critical

I live in Canada, so though we're (sort of) allowed to own guns, the storage regulations make them somewhat impractical for home defense. I have a 16" length of 1/4" by 2 1/4" aluminum bar stock. I narrowed it down on one end and wrapped up a comfy handle with hockey tape. It weighs next to nothing, is very nimble, and if you were struck with it, even on the forearm or body it would hurt like the hell. I'm in my living room right now. I have a Glock 32 on my hip, but if I couldn't use that for some reason I would use my M48 Talon short spear. It's short enough to use 1 or 2 handed as needed, it's used for thrusting forward so you don't need a lot of room to swing it, and because it's a relatively long thrusting weapon you can keep an intruder at a distance without wrecking the shit in your house. Spears have been used by all peoples on earth, from prehistoric sticks with crude stone points, up to bayonets that are still used by modern militaries. The oldest known spear is 400,000 years old, and they are still used in armies today. That makes it a winner in my book.

Aluminum bat, machete, crow bar, axe, large hammer (sledge), golf club, sword, bow, crossbow, spears, kitchen knives, the choices are almost endless. My personal choice next to a great shotgun, is the crossbow silent great range, easy to use, & most importantly very quiet. Next spear, sword, axe, crow bar, or aluminum bat does maximum damage without getting to close. Obviously these are backups for handguns, assault rifles, shotguns, & high power sniper rifles, and maybe even hand grenades. Believe me when I say it pays to be prepared..

One sorta dumb thing was the pepper spray like if the person doesn’t care about pepper spray you have no stopping power and with an axe or a gun even if that doesn’t stop them with pain it stops them with damage like an axe is extremely effective a two handed baseball bat isn’t even close to as effective as an axe as a weapon two handed axes have been used for thousands of years to kill people they do insanely high amounts of damage that it doesn’t really matter because sure you may have to strike more than once but how long is someone going to fight for after you chop off their arm or remove a chunk of their skull or something two handed axes are unbelievably deadly

The best way to protect yourself is to prep your house for an intruder. Safety film or bars on windows, door barricade, security locks on doors, good lock on the bedroom door, dogs and cameras. There's even inexpensive cameras out there that at least will notify your phone if a person is on your property. All of these things give you time to prepare or even escape another exit if the intruder is persistent and keeps trying to force his way in.

Where I am right now: Computer desk in bedroom What I'd use as a weapon right now: Within arm's reach: Heirloom Scottish Dirk. 12'' thrusting blade with a very secure grip and little way for an enemy to grab to take it from me other than very sharp blade. Within 3 steps: Baryonyx Kingfisher sword/machete in closet. 23" blade. Maneuverable single handed weapon good for cutting, thrusting, and punching with the D guard. A decent stand in for a dussack. (alternatively there's a clawhammer in the junk drawer just beside closet). For the record I train HEMA for fitness and fun, so I am trained in how to use them, up to and including grappling based techniques. I even have other swords and knives, but those are the ones I'd choose for self defense purposes. Could I chop up another human being even in self defense? I don't know. Great answer. People with HEMA experience definitely have an edge (pun intended) when it comes to selecting a weapon. I'm not familiar with the Baryonyx but I'll have to look it up. Home invaded a while ago when a "visitor" knocked on the front door I didn't want to answer the door. Next thing he's shoulder barged the back door, fell on the floor, looked up at me, said sorry then ran off jumping over a 6 foot fence without issue. Thieves want stuff easily without the fight usually. Good home defence could be as easy as locking internal doors between rooms. My house was broken into but all the downstairs doors are locked. One thing that alot of people forget about home defense is the defense aspect. Sure, you've got the perfect wweapon. What if you get shot or stabbed? What's there to defend against that? My home got invaded once. The attacker was adamant with leaving with whatever valuable he could grab so he wasn't leaving even with my crossbow pointed at him. He lunged at me and tried to stab me. You know what saved me? I wrapped a bunch of magazines and taped it around me as some sort of improvised anti-stab armor when I knew the attacker wasn't going to leave. Since then, I've been investing time and money on body armor that's maneuverable and able to protect me. I haven't found much other than steel plates. Protect your home, property, and family. But above all else, protect yourself. You can't defend your home, property, and family if you can't protect yourself.

I don't know why this guy thinks a gun is instantly the best weapon for self defense after saying "I think you can't kill someone" "I think you'll freeze". Then what's the damn point? You think you can shoot someone? If he gets too close that he can take your gun and point it at you, what will you do? A knife is far better (as long as you're not dealing with someone with a gun) because you can decide how lethal you want/can be with it. A misplaced gun shot can instantly kill a person that maybe was only drunk and got into the wrong house. Then you go to jail. Both the firearm and the knife are threatening, but only one tells you "I cannot hurt you if you don't get close, so please don't come close", the other instantly tells the other guy "I can kill you right now, what will you do?". If the other guy has a gun and sees you reaching for your gun, what do you think he will do? Sing a happy song while you take your gun and point it a him? He'll most likely kill you before you can react. So no, the best home defense weapon would always be a knife, but the best defense of all would be to hide your family and if you can and let the bad guys room to leave. Luckily I've never needed to use it, and I hope I never do. Ideally, Mister Pew Pew would be my go-to. Great video, by the way!

Living in Germany. What I noticed living in Mexico and the U.S.: Your doors really are bad. I mean, no offence but here we have solid doors with 3 bolts in the top, middle and bottom. These are already not easy to kick in. I myself have a baton and a strong flash light beside my bed. I just don’t like the idea having to come close to an invader or burglar. Anyways, best safety is to relay on reinforced doors and windows, plus a strong flashlight which you could use for hitting too...

I've had to repel an attempted home invasion once before and all I had with me at the time was a chrome support leg for a portable BBQ. I had a little time to grab it while they were kicking the window in. It worked but the experience made me paranoid about intruders lol. So now I have hidden weapons stashed all over the place in my house. Hammers, knives, bayonets, a machete, a big old meat cleaver, a cold steel Brooklyn Smasher baseball bat, a katana, an M48 zombie apocalypse spear and other fun surprises. Y'all are going to laugh but I'm in the middle of watching this video when my sliding glass door opens. I'm expecting my girlfriend so I don't even look up. But then I remembered that she's in the bedroom so I look up from my laptop as I'm sitting on my couch in the living room. There's a LARGE older gentleman walking into my living room carrying a shopping bag. He looks at me. I look at him. I say "hello". He says "Oh, I'm sorry" and meekly walks backwards and shuts the glass door behind him. This all happened in less than 3 seconds. Take what you will out of my anecdote. My takeaway was that, like Mike, I think a lot about self defense and situational awareness. My apartment is so small that I came to the conclusion long ago that a home invasion would be catastrophic. There's no place to run and hide if soemeone was motivated enough to come in, take my stuff, and/or hurt me. The best thing I could do would be to barricade myself in a room and crawl out a window and call for help. If this man had wanted to hurt me, I'd have had no time to find a weapon. He was 7 feet away from me. Sometimes hand to hand combat is your only and best recourse. Remember what Mike says at the begininning of the video: "Congratulations, you've won the crime lottery" Home invasions are so rare that you are more likely to win the lottery depending on what part of the world you live in. Great content Mike. Keep making these great, common sense, reality check videos.

Not tryna to be a dick, I know most people don’t research this, but home invasions happen fairly often. In the US each year 30,000 are assaulted in there homes by an intruder, 15,000 are robbed, 6,000 are raped, and 100 are killed. So your as likely to die from a car crash as you are to be viciously attacked in your own home

@@ty2115 good point. To be fair, most police depts and even national institutions disagree on what a home invasion is. They usually record what the eventual crime is without specifying the context. So for example a burglary may be recorded but they may not record whether the victim was home or not. That's why I covered my statement with "depending on where you live". In my entire life (42 years) I've only known 1 friend whose home was broken into. It happened TWICE! She lived in a rough part of town and luckily the perpetrator ran as soon as he was seen. The other instance her laptop and other small things were taken. So is she the unluckiest friend I have? Or did she just live in a neighborhood with high crime density in an apartment that was easy to sneak into unnoticed? Anecdotally, I'd say 1 out of 3 of my friends have been in a car accident at some point in their life. I'm sure if my friends all took the bus to work I wouldn't know anyone who'd been in a car accident. Point is, data is muddy. And there's nothing wrong with having a home defense plan even if you never use it.

@isaacmai79612 жыл бұрын
Legit. Full legionary weaponry, including a gladius, dagger, shield and javelin is remarkably similar to what I would use personally if I had the choice (besides firearms), only substituting the traditional large rectangular shield for a circular shield with a diameter just larger than my forearm and exchanging the long javelin for a 4-5 foot spear. It has incredible versatility, and with a shortened spear and downsized shield, it is very powerful in confined spaces.

If someone is not willing or able to stab an attacker with a knife in self defense then they're realistically not someone who's gonna do shit to defend themselves at all anyway so worrying about the weapon choice becomes completely irrelevant. Bonus tip: if you're defending yourself with a kitchen knife then use it for slashing rather than stabbing because they're made for cutting (not stabbing) and they will absolutely fucking wreck whatever soft tissue they come into contact with and create a bloody mess in a hurry.
@j-don52283 жыл бұрын
My thing with the knife is that intimidation is always a factor. Most intruders (if its say a robbery) don't want smoke, they just want your shit and to leave. Even if they were willing to fight, if you pull a knife on them, they very much don't want to be cut
@SuperSushidog2 жыл бұрын
And if they have a gun, by escalating the situation, they will feel they are forced to shoot you from across the room, because like you said, they don't want to be cut. If you want to intimidate the intruder with the least likely hood of actually having to use your weapon, it should be the biggest, baddest looking gun available, like a 12 ga shotgun or a big black scary looking battle rifle with a huge magazine. A laser sight with a bright red dot centered on their chest is very intimidating is well. If there's a reason you can't use a lethal weapon, they make large bore paint ball guns that look like the real thing and can unleash lots of large diameter rubber bullets that will hurt like heck and probably dissuade an aggressor. Some are even fully automatic and can launch tear gas and pepper ball projectiles intended for self-defense. As a side benefit paint balls will mark the perp with paint for later identification by the police.

It’s pretty crazy to me he said he’d rather have a pan than a knife. If you can bring yourself to go to work on someone with a knife they’re not going to be fighting you for long. Maybe a strong flashlight in one hand and some kind of bludgeoner in the other, or even a flashlight paired with pepper spray.
@Troy_Sent_A_Message3 жыл бұрын
The best 18650 flashlight is NOT going to "blind" someone. I had a property invader, flashlight full blast in their face. It keeps them from seeing what you are doing, and it's annoying to them, but don't kid yourself, you aren't going to "blind" anyone (if you are lucky it gives you 1-2 seconds of their eyes needing to adjust after high powered flashlight blast to the eyes, but then again if someone is getting flashlight to the face they don't stand and stare "into the light" like a deer or something). Buy one and have someone try it on you, doesn't work. But most small tac flashlights are made to be used as a weapon as last line of defense if need be.
@assassinmanx61282 жыл бұрын
@putalawea equisde not to everyone. Some people been sprayed and can handle it. As well it’s not an instant blinder like movies. Once someone is sprayed? They can still punch, stab etc for a few seconds until they start coughing, sneezing, and spewing fluids everywhere lol.
