@bravo4543 Prior to around 1840, there was no such thing as a paid, full-time police force in the United States. Instead, if there was a problem with criminals, the people- the militia- were called out to deal with it. Too, in the West, before there was organized law in the various towns, the people, now called a posse, again were called on to deal with lawlessness. And you know something? It worked where applied. Away from those towns? That was a different kettle of fish.

The reason they change the wording to young people is because the CDC added 18 and 19 year olds. When it used to be only up to 17. If you remove the 18 and 19 years old what they are saying would not be true.

I'm father of a kid who goes to one of these schools (Seton LaSalle HS), and our 2 officers are awesome. They were there before, and carried concealed, but now wear shirts declaring they are Police. My son chats with one of them regularly about hockey.

My brother (retired LEO) was a school resource officer in a local elementary school. Everyone, including students & staff, loved his presence there and the positive image he projected. (He mentioned that at least one anti-gun teacher appreciated him being there and felt safer because of it.) He greeted every student with a smile and a kind word. He stopped by classes to read to the kids. While there, the school had zero fist fights, let alone more violent issues. Then woke school board "leaders" who knew more than everyone else decided he was being divisive and refused to renew the contract despite wishes of parents, staff, and students. All local districts followed suit ridding their schools of this "negative influence" in their halls. Now, 5-6 years later, they're jumping thru their asses to find & hire SROs. Yo-yo politics.

My son went to a Catholic School in MD. Our school hired off duty police officers who would be on school grounds (in uniform) every day from before kids arrived until after they left. At a minimum there were 3 or 4 officers visibly present at all times. There was never an issue with anything there.

Living behind the lines in Pittsburgh, and having been a public servant here, I know that many of my colleagues and coworkers send their kids to catholic schools. Nobody is trying to make statements about the Pittsburgh Public School system, they just believe the catholic school system provides better education and opportunities for their kids. Many police, fire, medics, what have you are pro-2A. Given these two items, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the germ of such a concept originated with some of these concerned parents. It also would not surprise me if further impetus came from a diocese under pressure to attract enough enrollment of students and future students to remain viable as an institution. In other words, making those schools safer becomes even more attractive to parents-and especially parents aware of the reality of what “soft targets” present for evil or deranged people. Pittsburgh, the city, is a Democrat bastion. The political machine in this city, through the unions, the various universities, BPEP, nepotism, or just simply life-long generational loyalty to the party has ensured that the outcome of every local election cycle is decided by the Democratic Primary. Within the city, a Republican has zero chance of even winning office as a recorder of deeds-whether the guy won the Medal of Honor, the Nobel Prize, or was proclaimed a living saint by the Pope himself, he can’t win… but outside city things are bit more complicated. The communities and municipalities surrounding Pittsburgh are more contested. Some have Democrat majorities like the one where now-Senator John Fetterman was once Mayor John Fetterman, while others are Republican majorities. And that’s within Allegheny County; surrounding counties have even greater conservative tendencies. The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh extends out beyond city limits, and therefore is not altogether another echo chamber for the Pittsburgh Democrat machine. I do not have any school-aged children. I am retired from the fire bureau, and am planning my exodus soon. Many of my contemporaries already fled upon their retirements. Unfortunately, our union, Local 1 of The IAFF, was always very adamant about refusing to allow its firefighters to reside outside of the city (something about maintaining the tax-base, though probably more to do with the voting base). The Police union won its right to live out of the city, and of course, they were the first of the big unions to back a Republican in recent times. Tellingly, the teachers’ union has allowed its Pittsburgh Public School members to live outside the district for quite some time. This announcement by the diocese demonstrates even more push back against the failed and failing policies of the legacy left. Watch. In the next few days and weeks I fully expect liberals to vociferously oppose these measures, and to spew any amount of vitriol against the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese for even suggesting it. I expect both the media and the Democrats to chime in to voice their displeasure as well. They fought against vouchers to cover tuitions, you can bet that they’ll fight this too. In the end, they know that voters will demand that similar measures be taken to harden all schools.

Well, yeah it was only about $1 million. But they had an unfair advantage over the politicians. After all, they didn't have to pad their reelection war chest, they didn't have to pay out any patronage, they didn't have to deal with any nepotism or other political favors, and most of all, they didn't have to include any pet pork projects. Growing up near Pittsburgh, our high school assistant principal ALWAYS open carried a .357 revolver IN SCHOOL. There was a handgun and a shotgun in the principal's office. Nobody thought twice about it. Of course, this was in the early '80s, before guns started roaming around and killing people by themselves. (Was that early AI???)

Many if not most colleges have their own police force - I'd have to say that this is a very smart move for a private school. If I were a parent in that area, I'd definitely be considering preventative measures like this, when selecting a school.

Here’s what I find interesting. The Catholic Church is a private entity, therefore falls OUTSIDE governmental controls and can, if it wishes, hire private security. The Arch Bishop of Pittsburgh made the decision to take this action. Now, let’s look back at the Nashville shooter, why didn’t this individual assault their first chosen target? Here again a private school, outside governmental control, because of armed security. Doesn’t it make sense to have armed security in schools then? Of course it does, yet our politicians have refused to follow the examples of private schools in providing armed security and insist on maintaining “a 1000ft. safety zone” around our schools, yet we can see the effects of this failed policy.

I live on the outskirts of Pittsburgh and our schools have Armed Security Guards and metal detectors. Cause we believe in protecting our children just as must as federal banks believe in protecting their money! Our kids feel safe and don’t feel like they’re in a prison! This is the only way you protect the children in there school! Sad to say this but it’s the truth and reality of the world we live in today! It’s not a Gun Problem!!! It’s a mental illness problem one that we need to take a step back and look at how we got here in today’s society! Back in my day if we had a disagreement with one another it was settled verbally or a fistfight! No one got killed. Just a few black eyes or a bloody nose and that was the end of it. But something happened through the times where it escalated into either beating them to death or as today they just want to commit an act of violence in a large magnitude so they use a gun. The Guns are not the problem, its the individual, people or the parenting of how these individuals were raised that create this problem in society today. We should be focusing on recognizing a troubled individual and help them, not ignore them and let it build up to where they go and do these acts of violence in lashing out from the pain there in inside and harming others!

The public will always be able to control the money spent on a project They are held accountable for the cash out. However, the government is not held responsible for the project costs as they use the people's money. It costs a lot of funds due to corruption, payoffs, embezzlement, kickbacks, and the like. This morning, I caught a story on a local FL tv station. Seems a 6TH GRADE GIRL, hopped on social media, and damm near caused JFK levels of freaking out, by claiming she was gonna shoot up "a school." A 6th grade girl. And, not to be outdone, some "mom", not connected with the above mentioned 6th grade girl, or the school affected, couldn't WAIT to put her face on the TV, and tell the entire world how SCARED she was. Well, I said to myself, there's your problem - stop being in such a hurry, and being so proud to tell the world how scared you are of 6th grade girls!!! You are the adults! These are your kids! YOU walk the halls with other moms and grandmoms. And maybe grand dad is the retired cop. THEY ARE YOUR KIDS. Protect them. Don't wait for the feds, the city or county. They benefit by you being all pee pants and hand wringing. They are your kids. STOP being scared, and YOU take care of it!
