Alvin York was also very clever. In addition to his rifle, he also used his .45 pistol. And he would move around, firing each from different locations, while shouting "orders" to nonexistent troops. He convinced the Germans that they were up against an entire squadron, not just one man.

Nicholas Howatson I see plenty of 50+ year old bolt actions still around. All it takes is a spring to break on an AR-15 and its completely out if commission until you find a replacement spring. Mosin Nagants are simply more rugged inherently because its a bolt action. Most bolt actions will outlast semi automatics due to there being less moving parts.

tbone martinez During the assault, six German soldiers in a trench near York charged him with fixed bayonets. York had fired all the rounds in his M1917 Enfield rifle, but drew his .45 Colt automatic pistol and shot all six soldiers before they could reach him. German First Lieutenant Paul Jürgen Vollmer, commander of the First Battalion, 120th Landwehr Infantry, emptied his pistol trying to kill York while he was contending with the machine guns. Failing to injure York, and seeing his mounting losses, he offered in English to surrender the unit to York, who accepted. By the end of the engagement, York and his seven men marched 132 German prisoners back to the American lines. His actions silenced the German machine guns and were responsible for enabling the 328th Infantry to renew its attack to capture the Decauville Railroad.

I've several '03 Springfields in 30-06 an Enfield "jungle gun" but I prefer to hunt with a '95 Chilean Mauser in 7x57. Anawful lot of these old guns especially Mausers were rechambered in calibers other than 6.5, 7x57 or 8x57and sporterized. I cannot fault the accuracy of the Mauser with the original barrel one bit. A word of caution on the older Mausers and low serial number Springfields and hot loads.

My first mil surplus I just restore back to all original, unaltered spec was a M1917 Winchester enfield. I took it out to sight it in a few weeks ago and shot a three shot group all in one little hole at 100 yards with a random load I picked out of Sierra’s reloading manual. I knew it was an Accurate rifle as it shot .5” groups at 100 yards with a bedded stock, Timney trigger, and a 12x optic. I didn’t think it was going to shoot anywhere that tight with the original trigger back in, the original stock set(unbedded with barrel clamps stressing it), and no optic to boot! I went out and bout an all original, Norinco SKS I should have bout 20 years ago for $89 the next day for $270. I’m hooked!

Why take the time to trick out a $100 rifle? Because I can buy quality, full powered 7.62x54r ammo for $3.50 a box. I've saved enough money on ammo shooting my Mosin build to buy a brand new Rem 700.
@zeek317711 жыл бұрын
because its cool to see at "$100" mosin nagant out shoot a Rem 700 with a nice set of optics and (yes it is possible), btw if u scratch a nagant its no biggy, scratch a Rem 700 thats seven times the price and your heart will skip a beat (or at least mine would) just sayin
@thetobaccoguy175111 жыл бұрын
Right on. There is also something satisfying about taking a 100 year old gun and lovin it up to perform as well as a current production rifle. Again with the ammo, it allows you to practice much more for the money. I would never dream of shooting 2-3 boxes of .308 in a sitting. Your talking a $75 bill. The same from a Mosin runs $11-12, with the same smack. Plus you can't deny the history that is soaked into those rifles.
@MuseM191111 жыл бұрын
Hans S. Not to mention that same crappy wooden stock is damn good at smashing heads. Don't wanna scratch that new Remington!
@thetobaccoguy175111 жыл бұрын
J Simpson Lol. Did you see Eric smashing cinderblocks with a Mosin stock in their torture test? Crazy. I tell people all the time, a 90 year old mosin will outlive basically any current production rifle out there. You have to think, most modern hunting rifles get fired what? 5 times a year at most? Modern hunting rifles are not designed shoot thousands of rounds. I put more rounds through my mosin in one range outing than most guys do their 30-30 in their lives. I love my mosins.
@MuseM191111 жыл бұрын
I did see that! I found a Mousin Nagant for $175 where I live so I might get it soon. I like the simplicity of the gun. No useless bells or whistles. My kind of rifle.
@YardSaladKing9 жыл бұрын
I have a mosin that has been made into a precision rifle. A blueprinted bolted action can cost you less than $250. I recommend green mountain barrels. Mine has a McGowen barrel, but a good rebarrel, and trueing of the bolted receiver will turn your milsurp mosin into a precision rifle. I also recommend a timney trigger.

Nothing gets my attention and develops a sense of awe than discussion of WWI on out and stories of what average people facing incredible circumstances had to overcome. I have to agree with you on this one - one of my favorite rifles is 1947 mosin nagant that still had the factory cosmoline in the barrel when I bought it- I can still hit well out to 200-300 yds with it and that's all I need for deer

Bought three K31 from the Arsenal in Bellinzona a few years ago. Price was 100 Swiss Francs per rifle with baionett. Cleaned them and use them regularly, one is a bit less precise than the other two, in any case all three ar emore precise than me.

My hunting rifle is an old Springfield 1903 that my grandfather bought back in the 50's and sporterized. Still trucking on great
@martymclean43559 жыл бұрын
OMG! I can't agree more. you worked over 3 of my WISH guns. The 1903, Mossin and the Gerand were and are still great platforms as they sit but with tiny tinkerings they can out shoot the sleek, black super cool moderns. Thanks for this one guys, and if that 1903 A4 is still around, let's talk prices.

Alvin York's rifle (as he used in the incident mentioned where he captured 200 germans) wasn't an 03 Springfield, it was P1917 Enfield.

I hunt with a sporterised 6.5 x 55 Swedish mauser what a fantastic hunting rifle, but my 303 No4 Mk1* is awesome fun plinking down at the quarry with cast lead reloads so cheap and cheerful and being an as issued rifle just like my Father would have trained with before he served in the Pacific. He didn't use one in the field though because he flew an F4U corsair with 6 x 0.5 BMG's something I couldn't afford to play with down at the quarry :)

I really got into guns when I bought and shot my first last year, a '32 Mosin. I grew up fascinated by WWII and when I found out how affordable the 91/30 was, I went all in. There's something fascinating and humbling about owning such a weapon from the bloodiest conflict in recorded human history - not to mention the bloodiest front.

I’m a big fan of historical or period based movies, Raiders of the lost ark, The mummy (1999), Quigley down under, Tombstone, Young guns 1 and 2. If I were to make movies like that, I would definitely be on the look out for milsurp guns.
@mikescott97265 жыл бұрын
The only regret I have for being a milsurp collector is that I did not start early enough. I started about 6 to 7 years ago. Even since then almost all the firearms I bought (rifles) have at least doubled in retail value, some tripled. Some of my treasures I have had to pay up for. Swiss K31 very good condition 895. jungle carbine #5 650.00 with matching bayonet, the rest were very good prices. Just one example I scored a SVT40 for about 300.00 about 3 years ago. Anyway love to watch the old gun vids and keep up the hard work.

I have a Spanish Mauser with .308 Win printed on the barrel, what do ya'll think of that gun and have you ever seen a sporterized stock for one?
@shogunrommel11 жыл бұрын
Same here, especially with my K98. It was my first firearm period and is my most prized rifle. I fell in love with surplus firearms moreso than current designs today. Granted, I'd use my Mossberg 500 or 590A1 to clear rooms over my bolt-action rifles but for distance...yep.

I often take exception to most things stated on this channel but I will say with confidence that the old Enfield 303 that I used on many hunting excursions worked just fine. Open iron sights & two dear taken at a significantly distant sporting distance.

Glad to hear someone else using an old 303 british for deer hunting. My 03A3 is a nice rifle but the Enfield 303 is like a Cadillac compared to the 03A3.

Mike Robinson I have taken many deer over the last 25 years with my Enfield 2A1 Ishapore. Solid rifle, well made and accurate. I don't understand why some folks look down on the idea of hunting with a milsurp, they are accurate, hit hard and designed to be rugged in the field- everything a hunting rifle should be.

Soooo many different kinds of mosins. But if you have a mosin, you need a regular length infantry rifle, and a carbine (m-44, m-39) and then there are the finnish rebuilt mosins which are amazing quality, rebuilt with heavy barrels and target triggers. They are very collectable.

Speaking of Milsurps, I have an Eddy Stone 1917, the only one I have ever seen with the original one power scope I picked up a few years ago at a show. Looking for ideas for it, One thing I was thinking at was upgrading the scope and mount as I like long range shooting with big calibers. Also thought about glass bedding, but looking for ideas.
