GunBlue 490 only uses mineral spirits to clean, and doing it since the 60’s, an older and wise gunsmith who can talk for over an hour with his viewers. Steel is steel and there is nothing better then cleaning it with mineral spirits. Preserving happens by oil. He also said not to remove all copper from the barrel. It is like taking away the lead from petrol engines that need lead to smooth the imperfections in the engines….. This guy is full off crap, but that’s just my humble opinion!

@@xenomorph1317 I was searching this topic cause I just bought my first gun, a BP one, and after testing the indexing and the mecanism, decided to disassemble, clean and lubricate it. I used wd40 as I do with every mechanism... but a coworker of mine told me wd40 is not the best for guns, etc... so I'm investigating, but I am skeptical about it not being suitable, that does not reflect my experience with the stuff as a lubricant on many machine parts that were supposed to be best coated teflon based lubricant or whatever else... WD40 always gave me the best results always, just has to be reapplied more often is all. I suspected when hearing this guy that he was just being a salesman there. I bet the gunked up wd40 cleaned guns were just mostly not cleaned often enough, or not thoroughly enough. I'll keep digging though.

You are making the assumption that most people use WD 40 as an all in one. I use WD as a initial CLEANER. It removes moisture, gunk, dirt, carbon, penetrates parts and much more. Afterwards I use a solvent oil mix. Trichloroethylene in oil, thins it to get into parts and then evaporates leaving a oil film. I have been doing this for 50 years and have NEVER been to a gun smith for gunked up guns. That said, if someone brought you a firearm Gunked Up, It wasn't from just using WD40!!!

Holy !! I’ve been a gunsmith for almost a decade now and I use WD-40 for essentially all my cleaning needs. It’s relatively inexpensive. Doesn’t stink you out of your shop ( smells kinda nice actually ) it’s great for freeing up rusty parts and getting down and dirty. For really really dirty seized guns Liquid Wrench does a great job too. Thing is, you don’t lube guns with it. You lube guns with oil. That little bottle of Hoppes or maybe Outdoors or whatever little bottle of gun oil people buy is just a super ridiculous way of charging people out the ass. Best thing to do is keep a small bottle that can be refilled and buy a 2L can ( 1/2 gallon for the Americans ) of machine oil. All those little bottles are is machine oil. Take a good old gun rag, soak it with oil enough that when you wipe the back of your hand it leaves a slight amount of oil on it ( not making your hand wet though ) and use that to completely wipe all parts down as you reassemble the firearm. Keep it in a ziplock bag so it doesn’t dry out. 3 step process. Strip down and clean with WD-40, degrease if necessary and wipe down with good quality machine oil. Your guns will last forever and stay in perfect shape.

I think WD-40 has its place in firearms maintenance. The first is water displacement, if I get rained on while hunting I am going to wipe the gun down with WD-40 and then apply oil. The other area would be cleaning, WD-40 contains mineral spirits which is specifically good at breaking down plastic fouling in shotguns. Is WD-40 a lubricant, no, do I use it as a lubricant, again no.
@isaacschmitt4803
@isaacschmitt4803 3 жыл бұрын
Fun fact, mineral spirits is used for stripping paint. Might not mess up your cerakote right away, but give it time and your action wearing it in, and you might notice some premature wear on your bolt and connected parts. I can also see that as the part that messes up your wood furniture depending on how it's been finished.

I will say WD40 is leaps and bounds ahead of CLP on cleaning military issue M16's. I don't care what your drill sergeant says or the guy that issues your rifle. CLP is crap for cleaning unless you feel like whipping out picks that are too hard and aren't authorized for use on the M16 components you're never going to get the baked on carbon deposits off. Never used it for long term storage though.

Just use the tip of the firing pin to scratch the carbon off duhhh. Baby wipes go a long way. Then light layer of CLP and its golden. My two cents. I agree with all your points except one. I like when a dedicated gun lube contains a good amount of solvent, because just a little is needed to do the job, and I think most of us tend to use too much. When the solvent flashes off a product like Rem Oil, it still leaves enough lube behind, without making a mess. Thanks for the great vid.

I was a gunsmith many lives ago; I worked with one of the best smiths in the Dakota's, however neither of us were great at bluing. We had the tanks, we had the salts, and we had the WD40! Yes we had WD40 and that was why we were not all that great at bluing. We had another smith come to town to open up a barrel plant, making gun barrels, of course. We told him of our problems with the bluing not getting dark enough, so he came by and watched as we put a batch of guns through the process. Well when we finished and sprayed the newly blued guns down with WD40 to remove all the salts and water, he laughed his ass off. He asked a simple question. What is the blue finish made up of? Well we thought it over, and of course we knew it was a form of rust that treated the steel and protected it from red rust. Then he picked up a can of WD40 and asked me to read it, in LARGE print, it said REMOVES RUST! Yep, when we sprayed down the guns with WD40 then used newspaper (unprinted upon news paper) the paper always came off with blue black all over it, we thought that was just residue from the salts. It was not, it was the bluing we worked so very hard to apply to the guns. We changed to a good water dispersant OIL and our blue jobs came out MUCH deeper blue, and looked wonderful, not streaked as they did when we used WD40. Oh sure I still use WD40 around the camper and the house, but never with my guns, no I use Hoppes (Still have some #9 from the old days)

WD-40 leaves a residue that hardens additives can be a good thing depending what they are, rust inhibitors etc... the viscosity reducer evaporates and WD-40 gets thicker. solvents in WD-40 can stain wood and remove some finishes. I've had to soak a receiver in a solvent tank to remove WD-40 residue.

Gun Oil is Gun Oil for a reason. WD40 is a mechanics or home repair persons tool. I have used it in a pinch in the field with a gun to get moisture out of it, but then followed it up with a good cleaning and a good gun oil.

I learned the hard way about penetrating oils after a malfunction with a .357 revolver. WD-40 penetrated into the ammo and corroded the powder so, when the firing firing pin hit and activated the primer, the powder did not function properly causing only enough power to send the bullet slug where it lodged and jammed into the barrel. We had the .357 checked over and the slug removed. That was when the gunsmith and the owner/salesman of the gun store educated us on dangers of using oils and keeping the oils off of ammunition. Just a heads up.

For my guns I use a light coating of Ballistol for cleaning and lube and a mini drop of white lithium grease on the contact points. I haven't had any problem. I find most guys overdo the oil and makes their guns actually dirtier.

Not a heavy duty lubricator but it sure cleans and preserves. There was a KZbin site called "plate of truth" that did tests on various gun oils and wd40 faired near the top.

I didn't seem to have the best of luck with WD-40 down in Florida, I'd see rust form within a week of wiping a gun down with it if I didn't follow up with another type of oil or flat out treat it chemically to convert the rust into a protective coating. Between the salt mist traveling through the air and the humidity averaging like 80% year round rust is a constant battle, and it seems to just work through whatever preservative coating WD may provide rather quick.

Some of us have known for many years to not use WD 40 for lubing a firearm. But. It can be used for cleaning. After a day at the range, I drop my disassembled pistol into a tank of Simple Green and water. Brush and scrub. Use bore cleaner in the bore only. Use air compressor to blow off Simple green...then spray WD 40 into places I can get into. Blow off, then lube with SLIP 2000, . put the gun back together and all done in less than 20 minutes.

@evanator166
@evanator166 8 жыл бұрын
+Medic1911 It is not particularly a good solvent for carbon, lead, or copper residue, but it is good at cleaning plastic fouling since it contains mineral spirits, if left overnight. What it seems like to me is you are trying to cheap out on gun cleaning, which is not a great idea. Mainly from an effectiveness standpoint. If you require large volumes of cleaning and want it to be economical I would recommend Ed's Red. If you don't need a lot of cleaning about any commercial gun cleaner will work. Right know I am really liking Wipe Out foaming bore cleaner for rifles/pistols.

The only thing you can use it for on a gun is the wd40 silacone and I use it on exposed metals like the top of the reciever and the barrel because it is water resistant and it'll help keep the moisture from contacting the metal and causing that light bit of rust on it and you dont just spray you spray a bit on a paper towel and wipe the barrel down if you know its gonna rain

Two comments. 1) I was at a collectors gun show a few years back and a guy walks up with an old gun wrapped up in a rag. As he's unwrapping it, he starts describing how its been in the family, blah blah blah, I cleaned it up real good with WD-40, how much is it worth? The short answer was "1/2 of what it was worth before you ruined the original finish with a corrosive fluid". 2) If you use WD-40 on Starrett or Mitituyo precision gages you void the manufacturers warranty. It's for rusty exhausts and old lawn mowers.

I think the main thing with WD as a Lube is the fact that the other normal so-called gun lubricants are 10-12 $15 for a bottle the size of your thumb when you can buy a quart of full synthetic Mobil 1 5 W 30 for the same amount of money and it'll last you your entire lifetime and yes 5w 30 will lubricate your rifle just as well as anything else will
