Gunboats are narrow (BOA) so that they lift the windward hulls. Of course, that makes Gunboats easy to capsize.
@Greenflashtech5 жыл бұрын
Hi Seth cool video! I love what you've done with your Outremer. I've seen a lot of them launch and you've chosen something unique. Nice job. I'd just make one small (but important) clarification in the video. Losing a mast is definitely not what Gunboats do or are designed to do. The rig is or should be designed to go all the way to hull fly without breaking. Some limits have been pushed on certain boats and remember any rig on any boat can come down in the wrong conditions or due to human error. I won't go further to compare the two brands because they are simply a very different - and complementing- thing. Hence why grand large bought Gunboat. It is a good family. Have a blast and sail fast!
@TheSailingFamily5 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, I didn't imply they were meant to lose their rigs, just that the owners of those boats push them so hard that sometimes it happens. It's a big difference for us - we sail a bit more conservatively... But I agree, they are very different boats.
@saillaviellc60455 жыл бұрын
The Generation 1&2 Gunboats (62' and 66' including Phaedo) aren't actually carbon - the hulls are made of E-glass. The rigs, boards, rudders, and lots of other bits (including some hull stringers, bulkheads, etc) are indeed carbon... but the only truly carbon layups are found in the Gen 3&4 Gunboat 60's and 55's. Nice video and great boat - I love that Outremer! Having sailed and raced Gunboats for the past 3 years, I can tell you that they are not my ideal cruising boat. Absolute maintenance monsters, and too expensive to buy and maintain. The Outremers do a great job of balancing performance, comfort, safety, and simplicity for cruising in my opinion.
@TheSailingFamily5 жыл бұрын
I didn't know they were E-glass, so thanks for commenting. To be honest, now I respect the 1&2 Gen boats even more (given what they can accomplish speed wise). That said, I've never cruised on one, so great to hear your feedback. They are expensive indeed!
@paulhand71945 жыл бұрын
Seth is correct, Phaedo is a full carbon construction Gunboat there are some areas of Kevlar / carbon cloth in the potential impact areas fwd in each hull. There is zero e-glass in the hulls of Phaedo. Nice video Seth! I remember that day sail back from Nantucket :) we hit 21 kts for a short while between East and West Chop. We had a few sloops wondering "where the heck did they come from"!!

Thanks for the real world info. My dream cat is now at least cheaper and closer haha
@rumbepack Жыл бұрын
Phaedo is definitely carbon, according to Peter Johnstone all gunboats made after 2003 are carbon so only the first couple 62s are e-glass.

Old School era, 1982 I built a Crowther 45. narrow boards, high wingdeck, full roach full batten. 5000 man hours, airex. Multihulls were laughed at except when we always past on the downwind side. We had cruising sails. At anchor, monohulls would attempt to come close to look but they would go aground as we were in 28" of water with dagger rudders designed by Mr. Newick. If monohullers sailed with us they would try to pad all lose objects to prevent damage then they watch a can of coke sit on the cabin top at 16 knts,,,, GOOOD memories

Is that the same outremer as la vagabonde?? 45'??? Good fast cats, I see you were doing just under 11knots, both the outremer and the gunboat are 25 knot capable boats, good fun I'm sure, I crew on a retired1995 64' Alex Simonis designed Robertson and Caine custom built Cape to Rio boat, very similar to that vintage Volvo and clipper boats, we make 12 knots comfortably (with the cruising headsail arrangement, furling Genoa) only in 15 to 18 knots apparent on the beam, in the '96 Cape to Rio she (SV WARRIOR) averaged 10.4 knots for the crossing, she has the tried and tested ocean racing cockpit layout with twin interlinking pedestal grinders on the 3 speed Lewmar 77 primaries and main sheet winches, 13 cockpit winches including dedicated traveller and running backstay winches, hydraulic backstay,vang and inner forestay, rodded standing rigging, she is old technology racing wise now but still a very fast yacht capable of 25 knots for sure with the required crew for that, and that's probably the biggest difference. Fair winds

Pretty cool video Seth! But......Remember what happened to “Rainmaker”?! Better to stay with the Outremer. LOL
@TheSailingFamily5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, given we are cruising with kids we really don't need to be "flying a hull." I actually wonder if it helps them sell more Gunboats because it shows how fast they are, or it if harms their image showing how dangerous they are? Either way, it's one point for the Outremer! :)

And to give up comfort, space just so you can go fast, in my eyes is just selfish. But it is you show and I will enjoy the vids.
@TheSailingFamily5 жыл бұрын
Trust me, my wife had just as much say. The Outremer is fast, but it’s also quite comfortable (see last part of video). I would say that despite being 51 feet, it is very comparable to a 44 foot Lagoon in terms of interior space. And that’s a very comfortable boat. We tried to get the best of both worlds, and we think we did!
@svalliance83735 жыл бұрын
Oh, I must guess you really didn't look hard at Leopards either. They are probably the best made Cats on the market. I know since I shopped around for a year looking at many and the Leopard 50 is one of the best family world cruising cats on the market.
@TheSailingFamily5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, we’ve chartered a couple Leopards, including a 50 in the Seychelles (see that video, it was great)! But I do include them in the Coastal Cruiser category and we wanted a boat that could sail upwind well with daggerboards. But Leopard makes a great boat. There has to be a reason they sell so many!
