In the Japanese dub Gato is voiced by Akio Otsuka the voice of Solid Snake. Ironic that he plays a character who pilots a mech with a nuke. Oh and Kou is voiced by Vegeta.

Stardust memory. When the earth federation thought giving a gundam the ability to drop “a spawn point for the sun” on anyone that just so happens to get stolen. This is like what happens when a bunch of punks steal a Jeep that has a M28/M29 Davy Crocket on the back of it will with a few warheads in the back.

It wasn’t just the Federation. Anaheim and the remnants of Zeon that worked for them at that point wanted a way to get around the Antarctic Treaty which prevented both sides from using conventional nuclear warfare. All of Stardust Memory was put into motion by Anaheim, Char, and the Zeonic remnants as a way to pursue their personal goals-Char to start another rebellion, and Anaheim to continue profiting off a war they themselves started.

GP02 always feels like a "Zeon Gundam" just from looks alone. I honestly thought that some of Anaheim's engineering team made it look Zeon as possible for Gato to recognize where the nuke is.

I kind of figured that parts of the GP02 were, essentially the fault of the Federation and Anaheim's "Operation Paperclip" redux in how they handled Zeonic with recruiting everyone there.

That’s because Anaheim, at this point, had bought the top three mobile suit production companies that worked for Zeon during the OYW. A throughline of the series is that Anaheim, and the upper echelons of BOTH the Federation and Zeon are all working together to profit off the continued wars of the Universal Century. GP02 was specifically made to circumvent the Antarctic Treaty’s ban on conventional nuclear weapons.

Re: Nina and Gato. In the first or second episode, she hears Gato stole the gundam and says "Huh, Gato?" In a way that seems to me to be recognition, at least in the English dub. So, yeah, totally agree with you on that point. They could have, arguably, handled it better, but I think it works just fine as it is. I actually would have liked there to be another episode or two dealing with the battle over the colony drop and Cima's betrayal of Delaz. It all seems a little rushed.

That's because you don't take into account that Nina is an airhead who is obsessed with developing Mobile Suits, to be more precise her whole being is about the Gundams to the point where she has tunnel vision, add her budding feelings for Kou, Nina basically forgot about Gato until the incident with Layzner on the moon. Keep in mind also that their relationship while short was very intense, Nina is young and easily impressionable. She is also a spacenoid thus when meeting a tall dark handsome brooding freedom fighter her first instinct would be to want to heal him. One last thing, Nina's case is very common in the UC Gundam verse, plenty of women falling for the bad guy and end up doing very bad things, Gundam 0079, Zeta, Double Zeta, Victory and so on tend to have plenty of nice women turning into absolute monsters because they suddenly fell in love with the bad guy. Nina is very lucky because Gato never took advantage of her and made sure she could escape and Kou never ratted on her either.

Stuff like this is done on purpose and not necessarily a “plot hole”/“dumb narrative decisions” once you learn more about the powers behind the OYW/Zeon/The Federation The companies behind the creation and manufacturing of mobile suits are basically run by the same group of CEOs and royalty who are all trying to profit off the war. (Char basically tricks them into funding several of his rebellions over the years, too.) By the time of Stardust Memory, specifically, the company Anaheim Electronics-literally the #1 mobile suit developer and producer for the Federation-had already bought the THREE major mobile suits production companies used by Zeon. The mega corporation would then be at the center of numerous scandals and wars, providing suits and weapons to BOTH side in secret, until it’s revealed in Gundam Unicorn that the upper echelons of Anaheim have been working both sides against each other since BEFORE Zeon rebelled in the first place. (So close to 100 years at that point.) Tl;dr: gundams get stolen so easily because it allows Anaheim to keep making money off wars they themselves start

I remember playing a Super Robot Wars game with Stardust Memory in it and saw some SD Kits with snippets of the OVA on them and got intrigued. Watched it. Loved it. Painted my HG and SD Full Vernier and Physalis and love them to bits!

Have you noticed that all of the GP series didn't use anything remotely Newtype related technology? If it weren't for the Titans manipulation to coverup their own mistakes, tragedies and horrors such as cyber newtypes could've been avoided.

@@TheSillyDragonfly exactly, the GP series are capable platforms independent from Newtype technology, and they got scrapped not because they were obsolete, but rather due to Titans' own scandals with Cima. Warfares would've been fought by Oldtypes through their own grudges, if GP technologies were proliferated.

But as much blame lays on Char since he helped leak the psychoframe tech and Newtype research that led to the human arms race that developed in the later stages of the war. Both sides committed horrific atrocities on their own people to further NewType research, but it ultimately lays (iirc) on Char’a wanting to “fight Amuro fairly” that led to the proliferation of the Psychoframe and Psycommu technologies.

First half? Easy 9/10, very close to a 10/10. Buuuuut.... Nina and the whole reveal about her sours this so much. Last three episodes instantly lose two points just for that completely nonsensical, and I'd say outright cringeworthy twist. No set up, nothing. Strong 7/10 overall. Anyways, there's definitely a lot of good stuff in here. Both OPs are fantastic, still some of my favorites (shoutout to THE WINNER by the late, great Miki Matsubara, though MIO's MEN OF DESTINY is really close), Gato's a delightfully hammy villain, Cima's also pretty likeable. Kawamori's Gundam design is just top-notch stuff but all the grunt suits are really not far behind. Some great scenes and battles too, especially the Solomon fleet revue and Torrington. The animation is truly fantastic and alongside Turn A and 08th MS is probably the best Gundam will ever look. All in all, this would've been great if not for Nina being cringe as all hell in the last few episodes, and it's a shame that she pulls this OVA down so much.

@@CursedShinobiClown Directorial change, same as with 08th MS. 08th MS got hurt by it's director change somewhat less than 0083 which just straight up changes direction for some of the characters. After the 8th episode (when the directors changed) they also started to throw in some pretty noticeable Zeta memberberries too. "Oh, 'member Bask Ohm? Ohh, I 'member! (sorry for the spoilers, this is just to illustrate).

Speaking of the video games, once you clear the other story sections in Encounters in Space, you can go through the main story mode again, and Amuro will have run-ins with Gato, Shin Matsunaga, and Johnny Riden.

1 change I would make to Nina would be during the 1st half of the series when she shows her concern about Gato its treated as if she's part of the crew where its pretty much "damn zeon scum!" but with her growing more attached to Kou her bottled up true feelings about Gato begin to emerge where before the OYW she & Gato were a happy couple but with all the shit zeon started to do combined with Gatos pride as a soldier their love shattered culminating.

To mimic the original Gundam. At this point, Amuro is still alive and people both respect and fear him. Even if they know the original Gundam was destroyed at the end of the OYW, any survivor is going to see a suit that’s painted White, Blue, and Red with a V on its head and they’re going to think: “I’m not 100% sure that’s Amuro Ray, but there’s a non-zero chance it *could* be.” Psychological warfare.

Uh, no. I don't know about Code Fairy, but the other two? God no. Unicorn doesn't support Zeon any more than Char's Counterattack does. Requiem for Vengeance has some decent people on the Zeon side, but that's nothing that 0079 didn't do with Ramba Ral and Lalah, and a half dozen more times. At worst, RfV's problem is that it never really mentions the war in detail, except for the one scene where the old wise guy mentions that Zeon is wrong. Their self-justification - that it's okay to drop colonies and kill billions of civilians because of Federation oppression - is some bullshit that gets decent people killed on both sides, just like it's always been. There are people who believe in Zeon, in the idea that Zeon supports Spacenoids... and they're wrong. Sometimes they're subtly wrong, sometimes they're really obviously wrong, since the Zeon upper brass is pretty consistently made up of deranged psychos. But they're clearly wrong.

Neither Unicorn nor Requiem for Vengeance points to either side being the good guys; in fact, they both further the narrative that, while the oppression of the nascent Zeonic movement was completely Earth’s/the Federation’s fault, there were war profiteers on *both sides*-Anaheim and the Zabi family, f’ex-that were pulling the strings. No Gundam media says Zeon was in the right for the atrocities they committed. But there’s a helluva a difference between “Zeon was right!!” and “The Federation committed just as many atrocities against Spacenoids both before and during the war.”

Karen was probably executed for disobeying her orders to kill Shiro. The ending of 8th MS team is really, really bleak when you take into consideration what comes next for the Federation. Agar also becomes a Titan but is later kicked out and demoted to being an MS instructor after suppressing a terrorist attack launched against the Republic of Zeon.

Oh yes the one gundam season that I can safely say it nails it in both the animation quality the soundtrack and the mobile suite fights. Yes we do get a bunch of them app in space at a point where I'm kind of getting sick and tired of seeing space battles but at least stuff happens in these space battles and for the first 9 episodes I really didn't enjoy my time watching this. But then they just kept going and going and going until we get to the point of the story where I'm like wait why are we focusing on this random love triangle between these 3 characters, Why is our main character such a moron and doesn't think straight and why am I currently getting mad right now....... Oh yeah this is when the titans was formed joy. But outside of that I definitely enjoyed the anime quite a bit but thanks to reading the rebellion Manga I think I prefer that way more than the actual show.

Amuro was still mastering his NewType powers at this point. Remember that Char’a Counterattack doesn’t happen until a few years later; at the end of the OYW, Amuro is basically a test pilot/mobile suit developer like his dad was.

This show was always to me the best Ova between it 08th MS team and war in the pocket. In terms of the woman in gundam theres alot but specifically in the UC timeline Nina just doesn't work considering how much of a problem is though surprisingly no Mobile suit break down. Now Haman beautifully dangerous and the fact if people never saw Zeta gundam they be questioning who the woman in shadows is. I am looking forward to the Gryps conflict breakdown since we will have 3 potential 4 factions @BigMicahC Ms Matilda vs Haman Karn for the best woman in the Universal Century timeline

"Gundam Wing trash" ? Bro Gundam Wing is the best Gundam show ever ,period. Not to mention OZ mobile suites models designs are the best as the most effective and relastic. Lecturely some needs few edite and u got the mobile suite of reality. Did u see Arise model? That thing is very unique but also the most cost effective easy for ploits to adapt to powerful mobile suite. Grands models from old shows and seed is trash and super unrealistic (vast majority, except for few). The way they fight simply not going to happen that way. What about Tellgise design or Wing00 goes hard. The show has the best mobile suite operators ,and has AI. They have the best Gundam plots cast characters and the best and smartest people being Zeax and Tereas Hoishrenada. Gundam is not about just characters and story, that is secondary. It is about cool relastic technology, good plots and big brains mainpltion politics with smart as quotes and deep philosophical politics and how to make a successful revolution/resistance by useing peace people and gun people parallelly. It is about questioning governments and understanding fighters. It is about justice and power.
