Gundam F91: An Unnecessary (BUT COOL) Prologue for CROSSBONE GUNDAM | F91 + Crossbone Exploration

MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM F91 was Sunrise's attempt at starting a new frachise for the Gundam universe after all of the events that led up to the Axis Shock. Helmed by Yoshiyuki Tomino along with veteran designers Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and Kunio Okawara, F91 wanted to start fresh: no more Zeon, nor Char just a good ol' fashioned war story with child soldiers, a darth vader char clone and smaller mobile suits because model kits were getting too expensive to manufacture and truly no connection to early universal century as the story began in UC 0123. But did they achieved it?
My name is Absa, and in this video I'll try to explain why Gundam F91 did not worked as the stand alone movie that they intended but actually succeded in being a quick and kind-of-messy introduction to a great saga that would be better understood in the Gundam Crossbone manga.

I would really like to see the "Main Mobile Suit Master Grade Opinions" series, as it would be entertaining to see your opinions on these designs. Sad you don't like F91, but your points are valid and make justifiable. This movie is really nostalgic to me and I love the character and mecha design. If it weren't for Gundam F91 I wouldn't have given UC Gundam a chance. As F91 was the first Gundam I've seen and fell in love with the F91. Another funny thing is, In the gunpla models. I never got a Gundam. I got the tallgeese III, and Serpent Custom. I almost got the EW Shenlong Gundam but didn't have enough money at the time to pick it up. lol, over the years I've been buying the VF Macross models instead because certain gunpla were out of sock and production. When I finally got around to watching Unicorn and love the Byerlant custom. Bought that gunpla and when I saw the F91 2.0 and 2 were left. As fate would have it! The very first Gundam that opened me up to the UC series was my first Gundam Model kit. :D I wasn't disappointed.

We're gonna have to agree to disagree on the F91's design. I love the F91 design. It has a very sleek design aesthetic. I'm not a huge fan of the face under the mask, but I love the mask-off mechanic that goes with the Metal Peel-off Effect. The suit itself has a... less is more appeal.

I like the F91’s design as well. It’s one of the few late UC designs I really like. I especially love the VSBRs as weapons. They feel like the natural conclusion of what Beam rifle technology was building up to.

Victory is almost earth war. So crossbone is not mandatory to jump into Victory. But with crossbone ghost catch up the end of Victory you can read ghost after Victory to add more value to the story.

I'm ancient enough to remember when this movie came out, and lived in Funabashi at the time. I left the theater one strangely muggy April afternoon with 4 thoughts. 0: The sound mixing sounded off. Probably an issue with the theater equipment but it sounded shallow and uneven. 1: The Star Wars music was jarring felt cheap. I thought I heard a groan in the crowd (of like 20 people) when the most obvious one dropped. 2: That experience would not scale down to VHS very well. Sounds weird in retrospect but it felt at the time like F91 was made to be seen in a theater. There was something surreal and amazing about seeing Gundams actually bigger than a TV screen. (Especially big white flashy dashy afterimagy magic Gundams like F91) and I didn't get to see Char's Counterattack when it first came out. (Became a Gundam fan from episode 4 of 0080) 3: Those shiny new F91 kits at my local shop were suddenly 100% more desirable than they had been before I saw the movie. Of course, upon arriving at the shop that day all they had were Heavyguns and and a single Berga Giros. Funnily enough, though I didn't adore the movie as a whole nor did I hate it... it was something amazing to have multiple Gundam productions in the works at the same time. then later hearing a whole TV series was happening in the next year or so, tons of kits coming out seemingly daily, it was a great time to be alive.

Those F91 gunplas were a paradigm shift in quality, compared to the ZZ and 0083 kits that came out around the same time. Easily on par with the best high grades, and in some ways better than today's high grades (the hands say it all)

Hey ABSA, it's amazing just how addictive these Gundam series can be, not to mention the Gunpla that go with them... I was just recently able to watch the series I've missed and once I started I couldn't stop, I lost just over a week, even calling in sick to keep watching, Gundam Victory, Gundam X (which I thought wasn't part of the same universe of the UC... but was), then Turn A Gundam and finally G No Reconguista Gundam, and while it's difficult for me to both absorb visual content and written text (at the same time and pace of an episode), if you watch them close enough together it becomes clear (even though Tomino is missing from Gundam X and Turn A Gundam) that they are all set in the same Universe, and even though hundreds to thousands of years may pass between some of the series, some of the terminology used and even some images pop up during all of these series (and Mobile Suits) from the UC era and the series that preceded them. For example, SPOILER ALERT... in Turn A Gundam they refer to the "Dark History" and in the last few episodes, it show a visual record (of the Dark History) that has the Double X Gundam using the satellite cannon, they also show images of the RX 78 2 Gundam and at least 4 other early UC Gundams in the opening of each episode, as well as finding and fighting in actual Zaku Mobile Suits... in Gundam X, they have the Newtype myth, the space colonies that are dropped and still in space are identical to the UC colonies... and Reconguista is really about re-creating the Universal Century mobile suits and technology from the Dark History records because it was lost some time in the thousands of years and the total disasters on the earth that precedes the series and as well, in the first couple of episodes they have statues of the early UC mobile suits and one from Turn A Gundam. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to ready any of the Manga but it's clear that it was Sunrise's and the people that are in control of the UC Gundam story, that all the series I've mentioned, Gundam Victory, Gundam X, Turn A Gundam and G No Reconguista Gundam are meant to tell the story of how the Universal Century will evolve but not really change, that some people in power will continue to make the same devastating mistakes (for self serving reasons) and a small group will learn (the change in philosophy usually started by a young Gundam pilot), influencing those around them and then eventually rising up to stand against those in power to try stop the devastating losses and killing caused by war and pointless conflict to both people and the world/ earth sphere around them. This is just all my own opinion, so make of it what you you will... I tried not to give too much away about the series mentioned, they all are not too bad... I liked them more than I thought I would (especially Reconguista), of course they're a bit dated and they have both good points and some annoying issues but I would say they're really good over all... and you are all ready aware... Victory Gundam... was hard to watch at times emotionally, it definitely left me... well you'll find out... remember this is all just my own interoperation, so I hope I don't offend anyone...

Iron Mask is a cyber and the biocomputer going super saiyan + seabook finding Cecily floating in space is newtype shenanigans silly. Also from the big man Tomino's mouth F91's smaller suits was made for shot composition; whether that's honest or not can be left up for speculation but the kits were effectively larger on average with most hitting close to the 1/144 Nu Gundam's height being all cast in 1/100 compared to the traditional 1/144. It's a bit hard to tell because f91 was on the cusp of a bunch of economic bubbles bursting that usually are attributed to the size of suits shrinking, they still had yet to put gems/lenses/ect in the chest of every design which was absolutely a symptom of economical stress

I didn't like the movie very much, but I love the F91, it was a very different design compared the big blocky, angular Gundams that came before it when it first came out, the design is so sleek and no frills and I think it's perfect for a super fast, General purpose Gundam that can operate not just in space, but zoom around in the earth's atmosphere. Can't be blocky and flashy to zoom around on earth. The F91 also does have a lot of technological advances compared to the generations prior.

So I'll divide them based on those categories: - Movies: Gundam F91: the colony raid scene - OVAs: Gundam Unicorn: Khsatriya vs. Stark Jegan scene - TV shows: Gundam 00: the Kurgistan battlefield scene which transitions to Setsuna shocking the world with Exia.

@@androyus Those are good openings. Here's my picks: --Film Char's Counterattack: the unveil. I can't think of a better way to set the stage for this epic final showdown that people were waiting a decade to see. I can't imagine what it would have been like in 1988 to see Amuro and Chen pull back that tarp on the Nu Gundam, with the music, right before the title came up. The audience probably cheered so loud. --OVA 0080: Cyclops Raid. I don't know if it was the most epic three minutes in Gundam history, but with M-2 playing, and the designs, and the intense action, I can't think of a better opening than this raid. --TV Zeta Gundam: Quattro's recon. You don't need to have watched MS Gundam to enjoy this action packed infiltration, but for those who did, it was extra fun to see Char go in himself, instead of sending in his wingmen, like he did with Denim and Slender at Side 7.

Well, considering that their last feature film three years earlier was an absolute masterpiece (Char's Counterattack), why wouldn't they do a film? The problem is that Char's Counterattack didn't come out of a vacuum. It was built on a foundation of over 100 episodes of Gundam over a ten year period. F91 had none of that foundation. All it had were the mechs (and even those weren't kept consistent).

F91 was a wasted opportunity. The very title "F91" implies more of a revamp of Gundam, rather than a sequal to it (as the F91 was not chosen for canon reasons, but for the year the film would be released). This was an attempt to modernize the whole franchise, while still keeping the history of UC...kind of like a "Star Trek: The Next Generation" for Gundam. Except it worked for Star Trek. But it didn't work here. It could be that the fans weren't ready to move on from the OYW and the conflicts between the Federation and Zeon...not quite yet. The OVAs fared better. F91 was released in the year that Stardust Memory (Gundam 0083) launched, the follow up to an excellent short series War in the Pocket (0080). By the time Victory rolled around, people were just plain not so interested in Late UC. And when Gundam Wing launched right after Victory, people were just plain not interested in UC at all so much. The animation and the designs for F91 were top notch. The development, however, left a lot to be desired. Like you said Absa, the film tried to do too much in too little time. But I think it was rushed in more ways than just the presentation. I don't think the plot and the setting was well thought out. Thankfully, like you said, the plot and the setting would be better thought out over the years, courtesy of manga, specifically the Crossbone Gundam mangas. The Crossbone Gundam mangas developed this time in UC very well. Some might say that this time period is far better chronicled than, say, the Gryps Conflict, or the First Neo-Zeon War, thanks to the Crossbone mangas. If they do a series in this time period now, I think it would fare better. They are working towards it. Not too much UC left to cover anymore, with Unicorn, Narrative, and Hathaway done. They only have about twenty years left before they get into the SNRI "Formula" era. Soon they'll have no choice but to approach--or maybe reapproach--this era. Several choices in these works makes me think they are preparing the ground. The way Anaheim was disgraced, the way the Laplace box played out, and the cast of characters getting developed now makes me think that we'll get a series--maybe within the next decade--that'll pave the way to the SNRI, the Buch Concern, the Crossbones Vanguard, and Cosmo Babylonia.

I hope Tomino does one more UC Gundam story as a 52 episode anime tv series with reunited with Yoshikazu Yasuhiko doing character designs & Kunio Okawara doing Mecha designs along with Akira Yasuda & Junya Ishigaki, Yuggo Kanno doing music & set in the distant future of the UC like 1000s years. I kinda disagree I think we will see a Crossbone Gundam (& It’s Sequels) & Gaia Gear adapted into anime once they are done with Hathaway’s Flash, Thunderbolt & Unicorn Saga since audience will get tired of seeing the same thing over, over & over again & also because the Crossbone Gundam Saga (CB, SH, S7, G, D & X-11) are extremely popular & reaching its finale with X-11 manga & Gaia Gear because it was written by Tomino & because Char is marketable. I like your channel a lot. Let me say that first. But, please, please, please...stop saying Titans (pronounced as Tai'tans or Tay-tans) as "Tee-tans." For one thing. that is wrong pronunciation. Please do not reason out that that is how the Japanese pronounce "Titans." I mean, the Japanese pronounce "Gundam" as "Gun-da-mu" and you don't do that, right? Another thing, Titans are of Greek origin. It is pronounced as "Tay-tans" by the rest of the people of this planet except apparently by the Japanese. I watched your video with my Six year old son. Seabook didn't get any arc or development in his own movie. Like, how pathetic was his character writing in F91 when sequel manga (where he no longer the MC) gave him more character than his own movie 😏.
