All US Marines left behind were executed by the Japanese. The Japanese General responsible for their murders was tried and executed after the war.

I think every generation thinks they are better than the next generation but when push comes to shove our following generations will rise up and overcome. My grandfather fought at Vimy Ridge with 22 nd regiment [ Vandoos] . Survived the war and raised a family of eight. In 1939 he tried to enlist but was refused due to age. He joined the Home Guard and guarded nazi prisoners at Red Rock Ontario. When the time comes our boys will for fight freedom and us , no doubt.

Truly the greatest generation. Hard times made great men. And those great men made easy times.. But those easy times made weak men that we have to suffer today. Weak men that will inevitably bring about hard times.. And I pray that these hard times once again makes great men who will be willing to lay the sacrifices at the altar of freedom the way the greatest generation did so eagerly.

That’s not always true! Unfortunately, some were left behind. These special elite groups had their orders and knew the circumstances of what may happen if they didn’t get back to their rendezvous destinations. I don’t say that I agree with what happened to these individuals, but it was war! Some men sacrificed themselves for the benefit of others! ❤

Of course this movie was made to inspire a war time audience. It is not a 'historically accurate' type of movie. This movie is for people interested in seeing what the public was seeing at that time. If one is interested in the story of the Makin Island raid it is better to look elsewhere. As one of the first actions in the Pacific War it had its share of problems and mistakes. It is actually quite controversial and very interesting.

This movie would never be made today but it was need then in order to show the cruelty of the Imperial Japanese Army. Those bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were need to stop the inhumanity of that Army. We are headed there today but we need a hero to lead us and her name is not Kamala Harris.

Airplanes don’t drop depth charges. And there’s no way a WW2 submarine can carry 300 marines plus crew of around 50-60 crew members.
@iaincaillte3356
@iaincaillte3356 Ай бұрын
1) Actually Japanese planes did carry depth charges. They also carried specialized anti-submarine bombs designed to detonate near a ship's hull. 2) Two submarines were used in the Makin Island raid to transport 211 Marines (121 in the Argonaut and 90 in the Nautilus). Two rifle companies were left back due to space limitations. The Argonaut was not an attack submarine but a larger mine-laying submarine. The submarines were converted to troop transport by removing all the torpedo racks, replacing them with bunks. As mentioned in the movie, the subs only carried two torpedoes.

This is such a stupid movie. This not even close to depicting what actually happened with the Makin Island raid. The heroic story of these men is far more glorious than what these jackass film makers produced. I couldn't even watch it until the end, it's so bad. Terrible movie. The facts of the true story are so much more amazing to consider as to what these men endured and accomplished. The mission had a lot of things go wrong because the planning was not exactly the best. It was a new concept (America's first special forces) and I'm sure they learned a lot from the failures. Some men were unintentionally left behind and they were eventually captured by the Japanese and beheaded. There were great successes and great failures in the mission. This movie is far from an accurate account of this historical story.

Was the true story general knowledge when this flick was made? Probably not. The film Wake Island was mainly conjecture as no one knew what had actually happened to the defenders when the film was rushed out for propaganda reasons.

I realize that the movie isn’t accurate and that there were mistakes made on both sides during the actual raid, however, it’s just a movie. MASH wasn’t accurate either, but it was entertainment. I don’t say these things lightly as I had family serve our country. My paternal grandfather served in WWI. His three oldest sons served in WWII one of which didn’t make it home. My father served in the Korean War and went on to Japan and then Vietnam. My maternal uncle served in the Vietnam War and was exposed to Agent Orange and struggled with health issues the rest of his life. My son in-law served in Iraq and is now permanently disabled. 😢 So sorry that you think this is such a terrible movie, but I am enjoying watching it. Schools don’t have the time to teach every aspect of the different scenarios that took place during WWII as there was so many facets of the war. I don’t remember learning about the Makin Raiders. I looked at up to understand what happened, but it didn’t deter me from continuing to watch the movie. There have been a lot of movies made based on actual events, but the directors and producers couldn’t be 100% accurate because they didn’t have the time or the budget. While I understand and agree with what you’re saying about this movie not depicting what actually happened, it’s just that…a movie! I am proud of all of my family members and friends who have served this great country, and if you served, I thank you for your service! I cannot hold Hollywood accountable for what was left out of any movie. I choose to accept the positive impact that these movies portray! Right or wrong doesn’t always mean accuracy it means that it is an historical account of what happened.
