I don't think it lacking hitboxes on its legs is a mistake. Everything this boss does seems like the intention is for you to remain up close and personal with it. Which is something entirely uncommon in Terraria because all other bosses you want to be a distance away so you can avoid anything they might do.

Yeah I think you're right. Like you said this boss strategy is very uncommon for me so I didn't even consider the possibility that it was the intended method. Especially since it's so easy to pull off too, but based on the comments I've been getting it would seem that dodging underneath is the intended way to fight the boss.

Late to the party, and the comments already resolved anything the video didn't cover, good one. Albeit true melee being near non existent because of it being near unplayable in Terraria, there are a few exceptions to the rule that I find noteworthy. King Slime can be kited with swords, it's just that early swords suck. Muramasa and Spiky Ball AoE already work wonders against slime rains. A terrablade's swing and projectile can both hit at the same time and hence double the damage output, lets say against Pumpking. My knowledge is based on 1.3 Thorium Mod though, not 1.4 Zenith-solves-everything.

That said, true melee gets thrown out the window as soon as Hardmode is hit because any truly melee oriented items are mere novelty or used against common mobs and never bosses. Seeing as melee weapons that shoot out projectiles take over completely in the boss progression.

In don’t starve the few ranged weapons are pretty short range and almost never go off the screen. So this might be trying to get you to get closer when you have ranged weapons. And plus, the bosses in don’t starve all have no collision damage except for: the eye of terror, and the twins of terror. Those are both terraria crossover bosses and the regular bosses in terraria have collision which entices you to get away from the bosses to get damage from a safe range while don’t starve makes you get up close and personal, learn the attack patterns, kite the bosses, *die*. Because it makes you live dangerously and death is a part of don’t starve. And getting off topic here, despite having very different games, each game teamed up and respected all the differences and put it into their game. But back on topic, they made deerclops have no hit box because deerclops has no hit box in don’t starve. And you have to get close because in don’t starve your attacks are mostly gonna be close range.

It's hilarious that the method you use to defeat Deerclops in Terraria is really similar to the approach you'll take with most enemies in Don't Starve. The dodging under his legs reminds me a lot of how kiting works in DS and even moreso of how Wheeler works in Hamlet.

@@Endyre sadly no. Also wasn’t console updated recently? So the thing is that after journeys end only some accessories can be worn in vanity. I find this annoying as hell because I use vanity slots to keep extra accessories on me but journeys end just said no. That simply states that it is in fact an accessory able to be put in a vanity slot.

2:15 this strategy actually isn't cheesy, it's the way the devs wanted it to be, because in Don't Starve Together you have to kite the boss to kill him as efficiently as possible, so having to kite him in terraria too is a very cool touch.

As someone who played Don't Starve pretty often, I think his implementation here was pretty great. Firstly, Deerclops is a very large looking boss in Don't Starve, but because all that mass is centered above his spindly legs, he has a significantly smaller hitbox than you'd think. In fact, it's the smallest of just about any boss in the game. So I think the legs not being a hitbox in Terraria was a neat inclusion. As for the zooming up under him strategy, it's also pretty faithful to Don't Starve, as direct fights with him force you to dodge last second since his hitbox is so small and ranged attacks are a rarity. The fact that his ice attack can sometimes hit behind him is also a factor of the boss in Don't Starve. Since his hitbox is so small and his attack AOE is so large, he incidentally covers a very small area behind him even if it doesn't look like it. As for the items. I love that the Terraria managed to make players just as excited to see the Eye Bone in this game as they would in Don't Starve. Lmao The Shadow Hands from the Bone Helm seem to attack through blocks, so it may be useable as a safer way to farm statue enemies pre-hardmode. The only item I don't think was implemented too well was Lucy, simply because it's not often that you need an axe, and once you hit hardmode, you really don't need a dedicated axe. I really wish chopping a tree down with her gave you swiftness and/or mining speed for a couple minutes or something like that, which would thematically fit the item while keeping it useful not just as an axe, but also as a pseudo-bewitching table.

you can summon it before eoc by just mining the evil ore which is pretty underrated since 1.4 made it so they spawn in bigger clusters and you could actually make the weapons out of those bars... still not recommended to fight deerclops that early though

Nobody mentioned that the boss spawns naturally, too. Midnight, blizzard in the snow biome, NPCs not too close, there you go! At least until he's defeated once in a world. Then the spawn rate is 25% currently, when the conditions mentioned above are met. Deerclops also despawns but only if you leave him unattended for a certain amount of time, but it's pretty long.

As a Don't Starve player who came here out of curiosity I love how the fight works, but omg the drops make me laugh! It's so weird to see all the drops Since most of them aren't from Deerclopse! The powerlevel of Terriaria is so crazy though so I can see why you need so much (And eyebrella the normal "drop" isn't exactly needed in Terriaria, normally for shootus houndious you need to go kill another Giant to craft it.). what I can say from my experience, is that having any sort of jump boost (maybe double jumps included, I didn't test), allows to just barely jump out of ice shards attack range so you can just keep jumping in front of him while dodging the ice shards and in my opinion, the snowball attack (or whatever you wanna call it) is the worst one

The shadow hand accessory can be used to farm enemies, 1.put ur self in a small box with a water candle 2.drink a battle potion 3.wear other stuff that increase spawn rate 4.equip the shadow hands 5.go afk and let the hands do the job!

My issue with chester is how it bounces around constantly and takes way too much time to stop moving so you can open it. Sometimes it even gets stuck and won't stop jumping until you readjust your position for it to find another spot to take like 3 whole seconds to settle into. It's nice in that it's always just there instead of having to be summoned and it frees up an inventory slot but wow its AI is bad

Ok, i know this is completely unrelated to the video, but when i got the terraprisma, i’ve been genuinely thinking about switching from melee solar flare armor to stardust summoner armor, and since i don’t have a fanbase, the best thing i could think to do was ask on gungnirs latest video. The only thing i’m worried about is the defense and lost damage reduction, and i’m not particularly good at dodging, but with my zenith i kill most things that try to attack me before they can get to me anyways. It would be pretty cool if gungnir himself recommended which one i should choose 😉

Well, having played Summoner and Melee to the End-game I think I can reply. This is going to be lame, but, it depends. Solar + Zenith is arguably better due to the much higher defense and overall attack damage, as well as the fact that the Zenith possesses homing, making Summoner weapon's benefits limited if aiming for bosses. However, a summoner End-game set-up with the Terraprisma makes events a breeze (I recommend Valhalla Knight for this though, higher defense and the ballista's are surprisingly effective). An End-game Summoner loadout is also generally better if you want to focus on something outside of combat, such as building, or in my case, cleaning the world of corruption. TL:DR: Solar + Zenith for Bosses, Valhalla + Ballista's + Terraprisma for events, Stardust + Terraprisma for moments you don't want to focus on fighting.

Chester is an S+ tier drop since it's both a Pet AND a Piggy Bank, allowing 1 free space in your inventory (you don't need the Money Through anymore) since it can be equipped in the Pet Slot.

Deerclops took me by surprise when I first saw it. I happened to have met the conditions for the regular spawn and it suddenly appeared. I was like: "What the hell is even that?". Luckily, I already had a decent bow, so I could beat it from a distance. At least this is better than Empress Of Light or Duke Fishron. For me, those bosses are always post-Moon Lord because they're actually more difficult than Moon Lord.

Yeah lots of people who have played Don't Starve have been telling me that dodging between the legs is a strategy used in the original game. When testing the method it felt extremely easy and way different from other Terraria bosses. That being said I didn't do a great job of demonstrating just how easy the leg method is in the video. For my strategy I didn’t use an arena, I just went above it left and right in a wide upside down U shape and let it walk to be and when it got close enough to start the ice spike attack I jumped over to the other side, it takes a little getting the hang of though

i just ran into this guy in my world because of it being mid night in a snow storm wile i was going to break some shadow orbs in the corruption did kill it and got the pew mantic the eyebrella and the bone helm

I had actually forgot about deerclops until after destroyer soooooo let’s just say I beat it in 3 seconds.
