Too much emphasis on liabilities & injuries these days, but the old school fight choreography & stunts ("go for broken bones" style) way of martial arts film-making (mainly that of classic Hong Kong action film) is virtually dead, although...you are getting some Indonesian / South East Asian film fight & stunt crews who are trying to revive that "go for broke" vibe.

It's crazy to watch cause from Yes Madam probably up Oscar Winning Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, she was known as a action star. She was always charismatic and likeable as a action star but to see her get a role with depth like Crouching Tiger was mind blown (Going through her film C.V a few years back, she did start to sprinkle in a few dramatic non action role's here and there a few years before Crouching Tiger in her Hong Kong roles). That's what makes it great to see her mix action with dramatic work for her eventual Oscar win.

So, agree! There's also something to be said about rockin' a short, sassy hairdo to accompany the overall look & feel of this action packed sequence! Next to the '90's, the 1980's had THE BEST outfits of any decade! On a side note: I wouldn't mind being married to either of these stunning visions of lovelies, or some women who are just like them. Sure they could definitely wupp my tail in the process, easy, no debate there; but just to know that my woman could handle herself in a fight (unfair or otherwise) would be one less worry or concern for me when I can't be there for her... not that she'd need me to always have her back!

Cynthia Rothrock is a highly trained martial artist. She received most of her high level titles prior to starring in this movie. She is now a Grandmaster. Michelle Yeoh is a trained ballerina, and was attending the Royal Academy of Dance in London, before an injury derailed her professional ballerina career. For someone with no ongoing martial arts training, she is very convincing. And she did her own stunts. I get so disappointed with current actresses who obviously don't know how to do martial arts. Only a few impress with actual training (Lucy Liu, Sarah Michelle Gellar). As awesome as the Kill Bill movies were, I wasn't impressed with the sloppy martial arts. I don't mean that they weren't pretty. I mean they were unconvincing. It's hard to get away with stuff like this in Western movies. Insurance liability and all that. I remember when Jackie Chan started doing all his Rush Hour movies, and he was constantly told he couldn't do certain things because of liability.

Call that a fight scene, ptttt. Where's all the quick cuts? I mean. you can actually see them doing the moves :-)
@gungriffen7 жыл бұрын
Andrew Thorne One thing I fucking hate about modern fight scenes is zoomed in, rapid cut, shakey cam filming. I don't know if it was Batman Begins that started it but it was the first time I noticed it.
@andrewthorne35707 жыл бұрын
Think it became "trendy" with the Borne Identity. The Taken films have made it ridiculous, with one scene of Neeson climbing a fence looking like there are 18 quick cuts. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXSumZ6qmMeZh68 CLIMBING A FUCKING FENCE. That's what i love about John Wick, it's almost like they forgot to buy enough camera's so you get to see what they do kzbin.info/www/bejne/bavQpqmYrNOLfacm24s

This is way more impressive than what you see in the fight scenes in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Not that I mean any disrespect to the performers in that film. I'm sure they did their best (and probably better than I could), but Cynthia Rothrock is incredible!

Ok, WOW!? I know this is already an old film but DAMN GIRLS!? These ladies can definitley fight! and they did the fight amazingly well! I wish they would use them as an influence when making new female fighting movies. like CHARLIE"S ANGELS for example. and for those upcoming movies for this generation. :)

I've seen every single one of Rothrock's films during her prime, and tbh only HK cinema does het justice in front of the camera. A lot of her Hollywood films make her look weak and don't capture enough of her on-screen fluidity in the action genre. Though Hollywood's experience in hand to hand combat was no where near Hong Kong's back in the day.

Competition was very tough. So its harder to get yourself heard when the competition are motherfcking Jackie Chan, Chow Yin Fat, etc... I'd argue that she have not meet the director that would have make her career break through. Arnie might have been stuck to b-movie if he have not met James Cameron who made him the Terminator

On my bucket or wish list, my mission is to obtain the entire 5 part series of in the line of duty. Rothrock and Yeoh portrayed two characters, beautiful intelligent and wouldn't back down for nobody's Business. It would be nice as a woman to be as strong and a damn good fighter if push came to a shove.
