This is the best English foil tutorial advice video I have seen! All the points mentioned are very important, and the sound is crystal clear (a lot of videos have horrible background noises). Thanks for taking the time to make it. It is sad to see lots of bad info on SUP foiling on the web, this should help a lot. I would add a small detail: On 8) position of the front foot is key, I would say that this is the big advantage of straps, or at least the front strap: to lock the front foot in the proper place, and have a better feel for the board reactions.

Thanks. Yes footstraps help in this repect. I do say that. However, they can be a injury risk when you crash.

I've recently started to chip away at the steep learning curve that face beginner sup foilers. and it ain't easy! But your video definitely helped push me to dive into the deep end. Just excellent advice and tips presented in clear English that anybody can understand. The 3D aspect of foiling is so difficult to control and is my hardest obstacle, along w/the critical foot placement over the foil and stringer. One thing I wanted to add to your tip about roll/pitch/yaw is that there's also lift and descent to deal with. Just forget everything you know about regular surfing and start w/a clean chalkboard.

Hey, very nice explanation, thanks a lot for sharing this! I'd like to start foiling behind a boat, learn how to foila and pump and be ultimately able to do wingsurf. What kind of board/foil (and wing) sizes would you recommend for that? I'm 5'10 with 172 pounds. I do kite as well, so if I could also use it with my kite at some point it might be fun...but not mandatory at though.
@GunnarBiniasch
@GunnarBiniasch 4 жыл бұрын
Ok. At your weight should you a large Surf Foil Wing with about 85cm Span and 3500cm3 Volume. This will give you a good low end when winging and will make learning behind a boat really easy. A board with at least 120 Liters Volume should be great for you to learn on.

Hi I have a 36inch wide 10 foot starboard extra whopper I am not using, I'm 125kg so it floats me fine, can I use it for foiling or would i need a smaller board?
@GunnarBiniasch
@GunnarBiniasch 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tsin. You should be fine on that board for foiling. It is big, but so are you. Using a smaller board is only an option if you a comfortable paddling it and catching waves with is consistently. Smaller does make it a lot easier to pump, but that is pretty much down to weight. What you need to keep in mind is, that you need a bigger wing to make it easy to take off on smaller waves. The Go Foil Maliko is pretty much what you are looking fro at 125kg.

Hi Dude, The white and green board is a Magma Custom Board. It's a local shaper. I have had it for a long time now. It's 8'11" x 32". For Surffoiling with a kite any board is good. The GoFoils, Takuma, Moses Onda 61 are all good Surf foils that work well with kites.

Hi! I'm 50 years old and I started doing SUP because I think that SUP is a great sport and doesn't require much from some joints of mine, that are no longer so new. I became interested in foiling, however, watching some videos, I found that the sport requires a lot more of the athlete's body especially when doing the pumps. Am I right?
@GunnarBiniasch
@GunnarBiniasch 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Marcio. How much effort you require will depend on your equipment. If you do not want to exert yourself too much, then a bigger longer board and large foil will allow you to catch the smallest waves possible with little effort and pumping. Pumping back to the back sets is always tiring, but you do not have to do that. Remember that I made this video back in 2017. The Equipment has come a very long when since then and it is much easier now.

What is the price for a board and foil like the ones used in this video? What is the entry level price for this SUP style?
@GunnarBiniasch
@GunnarBiniasch 7 жыл бұрын
The Foils featured in the video range from 1,300 USD (Takuma v100) to 1800 USD (GoFoil Maliko). The Boards are all Normal SUP boards that have had tuttle or US boxes installed. An install like that usually costs around 200 dollars. Foil specific boards from the brands that make them range from 1500 USD to 3000USD depending on the brand and construction method of the board.

Can we just to row than foil and pump without waves? in a lake with flat water?
@GunnarBiniasch

Yes. But keeping going in completely flat water is not easy and takes a lot of energy. Check out this video of Eric Terrien paddling his board up onto the foil in flat water. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6mypYB3idGJoa8

Do you need a cresting wave to get up on the foil? The reason I ask is my local beach breaks close to shore...too shallow for a foil but it picks up some relatively good swells further out which might be nice to ride if I could get up onto a foil out there. Would a longer board help for that?? Also what mast length do you recommend? I'm guessing shorter if you are getting close to shore?? BTW I have been kitefoiling 3 years and surf SUPing longer but stopped SUPing because I got fed up with all the grief from the surfers which took all the fun out of it. But if I could get into those outside swells where the surfers dont go........
@GunnarBiniasch
@GunnarBiniasch 7 жыл бұрын
Glenn Bartlett. It's easier to learn if you have a small cresting wave, but not really necessary. I would recommend you get a downwind sup foil like the MALIKO as this will fly earlier and allow you to catch those bumps outside.
@GunnarBiniasch
@GunnarBiniasch 7 жыл бұрын
Glenn Bartlett. regarding the mast. stick with 60 to 70cm for sup foiling. anything longer is really hard to control on a sup.

Is there any differences as far as safety from being attacked by a shark verse other surf boards?
@GunnarBiniasch
@GunnarBiniasch 7 жыл бұрын
There is no research that supports the theory that sharks will go after a foil more than another board. There have been 3 or 4 documented cases where a shark has munched on the foil.

Great video appreciate the tips. I have been surfing for over 40 years and just started sup foiling.have not caught a wave yet. I have a takuma foil. I mounted it on a Costco 9ft 6 in foam sup it took the foil well. It was an easier foil figure me to balance on , quite stable. Do you have any insight as to learning on this set up? I'm starting out with the smaller mat I think its 40cm. Link to my board and foil setup. plus.google.com/+GaryBate/posts/Qmr5MXLEkTE
@GunnarBiniasch
@GunnarBiniasch 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Dude, The Takuma is a great foil to learn on. However, it looks like you installed it way too far forward. In the picture it looks like its about halfway up the board. The back screws from the plate should be about 71cm (28") from the tail. I am also worried about the install. It looks like you just drilled 4 holes and stuck bolts though. Are these reinforced in any way? If not, the foil will rip out of the board when you actually crash when flying at decent speed. When learning, start with the 40cm Mast. I recommend you learn behind a board first. This is the easiest way to learn the three-dimensional control over the foil.
@capodad2u
@capodad2u 7 жыл бұрын
Gunnar Biniasch the back screws are 28" from the tail. Yes the bolts are reinforced. They have 2" diameter stainless steel washers on the other side. In addition they bolt through a plate that is about 6 inches by 9 inches on both sides (top and bottom, added later) to spread the load. I'm using the 40cm mast. I'm going to try very hard not to hit bottom. Or anything else, especially people.....or myself. Wish I was in the Canaries. Yes I have surfed there. It's great. Especially the topless beaches. I'd probably trip carrying the board to the water and break the mast off. Lol
