Wonderful vid, thank you. I absolutely despise going on Reddit and seeing not only horrid photography but terrible posing. Educating 1 person at a time is the best we can do. It's not always obvious to new comers. I've made a huge conscious effort to improve my photos and it's a lot of fun!

Couldn't agree more! Though I'm not great in a lot of areas, but I think my photos are pretty decent. Hopefully, this can be helpful to some :D

This is excellent. Not enough people make gunpla photography videos, so this was very helpful. Thank you

I don’t have a camera or a dslr. I only use my iPhone 13 Pro Max . I hope that it’s “expert” enough in the future when I’m taking pics of my kits but god damn this video helped A LOT and I finally understand more about how I want to take my photos for gunpla ! Thanks a lot ! U earned a subscriber !

A phone would work, but like I said, maybe just a bit limited in terms of control in some areas. After all, gunpla photography is very niche and I don't think Apple or other phone makers are optimizing their phone cameras for this. I might try a few things to see if I can take photos with my phone that doesn't look like it's taken with my phone...

Excellent video and tips! Just took the time tonight to set some up for a shoot and it made a world of difference. Do you have links for the types of lights you're using? And what sort of matte topcoat do you recommend? I still ended up with more glare than I would like on the dark blue of my kit even though I used the same matte krylon I used on the rest of it.
@GunplaNewbie Жыл бұрын
I would suggest getting hobby grade paints. Maybe Mr.Hobby matte topcoat if you don't have an airbrush setup. As for the lights, please check my description box, under the camera section that's similar to the type of lights that I use.

Hi, really liked the video, thankyou! I got one question, if using a dark background rather than blocking some parts of the light source, is it possible to achieve the same level of pitch-black background like your Instagram shots or the Jesta example at 6:44? I don't really like how the light would be on the backdrop as seen in 4:14

There are few methods in my mind other than blocking the light pathway. If you have a small desk that can be moved around, then shift the desk away from the wall and turn off all ambient lights. Have only the front light source in front of the subject. Since the backdrop or wall is far enough, it won't be illuminated by the front light. Another method is through editing. Just digitally, crop out the subject and darken the entire background. Might look a bit wonky but it's one way to do it.

Gundam. The only kind of model kits where people think taking pictures of them is a fundamental part of the hobby. People on Reddit or Instagram care more about photography than the quality of your build it seems. My question for those kind of people is this: Why don't you just admit your real hobby is photography? Yeah I'm bad at taking pictures. My hobby is building model kits and not photography. That's what I learned. I have an airbrush and a paint booth, not a light booth and camera. I put my effort in to making it look good in person. People care far too much about taking pictures.

Do you find darker kits work better with a lighter background? I tried my darker red kit with the dark background and it seemed too dark.
@GunplaNewbie Жыл бұрын
It could work but you need sufficient light in front to lit up the entire kit. If there's shadow on the edges of the kit, then there's not enough separation from the background. And yes, generally people would use lighter backgrounds for "darker" kits but if you look at bandai promotional photos, it's not always the case.
