Just got the Raser and the Balancer. I freakin love them. I was using a set of sandpaper sticks and sure that gets the job done, but with the Raser you just feel the quality and the cut, and the nice shine it leaves behind. I think it was 25 bucks well spent. I mean, you go to Mcdonalds a couple times, you'll probably rack up 25 bucks. If you could get a premium, nice experience and have a more enjoyable time building gunpla, with that same price, pshhh fuggedaboutit.

World of difference from the shitty 5 for $8 glass files from Amazon u definitely get what u pay for and ur definitely right with the analogy a lot of people spend that money in a day or two on bullshit but wanna cut corners when it comes to modeling

Pro-tip: Nub discoloration in plastic can usually be sorted out by just burnishing it with your fingernail once you get it fairly flush. Works surprisingly well especially on softer plastics and ABS though you don't want to press too hard and gouge the plastic (this tends to happen on edges). Also somewhat works on stress marks. The finish will be inconsistent which is where you would use files and whatnot (or topcoat). If you need a budget method to tighten joints on kits, you can just cut/tear bits of the instructions as they tend to be printed on a thicker coated paper. Don't do paint as paints with thinner will degrade certain plastics (ABS especially).

Just started this hobby, been using my fingernail to fix small color issues from nub removal, honestly surprised I haven't seen it recommended more. My other occasional choice was to cut a small rod off of a runner of the same color and rub them together. As for tightening joints, I've been cutting a small strip of the sticky side from post-it notes. The only problem is you really have hold it all together while you snap the part back into place.

I saw a very good method for avoiding discoloration on nub removal. You take the nub down in thin layers so that your hardly removing anything on the final cut. Very little stress on the plastic

So I bought the Raser and balancer. I like them but it’s definitely geared towards people like I think who do straight builds. I don’t have the time/space to completely sand and paint like I’d like to do so these tools are good for getting kits looking better with limited time.

I used a Glass file (not this specific one just one from amazon) for about a year now. and for a mostly OOB builder it is really great also works great on clear parts. I can even use it to remove seamlines without needing to paint the kit as the glass file keeps the finish of the plastic.

Nip till you have like a 1mm amount of runner nub, don't cut flush-to avoid stress marks. Sand down with raser, hold at both ends(thumb+pinky) and do slow long slow strokes. Eye ball the amount left. When you start getting close and see that build up, you can remove with finger nail. Finish sanding off in one direction, polish off and you have a great use of them. Used on 3 kits thus far, and loving the raser and buffer/polish.

I've had my Razor for a couple of months and snapped over 30 kits together since I bought it. I love it, it's really improved the quality and precision of my nub removal game and combined with the new USA GS 2.0 Nippers, it's seriously quick, efficient and precise to chew threw any kit. I just snapped the old school Devil Gundam yesterday and the brand new Messer today, and regardless of kit age makes this step for each part a breeze. I have no affiliation with them and am a big fan. Where it really excels is with compound positive shapes like thruster bells and fuel cylinders/gun barrels, or the outer edges of leg/arm parts. I used to really struggle getting precise perfect nub removal for clean undamaged thrusters or leg armor, and now I have to try hard to make a mistake lol, it's that good. GP really put out a high quality tool with great/thoughtful presentation -- very much worth the price IMO. 2.0 Nippers + GP Razor is my go-to for all parts removal today, what a difference!

I've got a glass file for nail polishing that I picked up for less than a dollar. I use a sanding stick and a wipe with my t-shirt or jeans for a medium/semi gloss finish. The only downside with the glass file is the edges can create a gouge if you aren't careful. I clean out the plastic particles that clog up the file with a toothpick and it's good as new again. Another advantage of the glass file is that you can see through it as you file

I wonder if the major benefit is reuse and longevity. Considering the Raser is made of glass, it's probably harder than most anything it will ever come in contact with, and it's washable. Granted, any sanding stick is equally harder than anything they'll ever come in contact with, but most sanding sticks aren't meant for washing/wet-sanding, and would crumble apart under a faucet. As for the buffing equipment, those can almost definitely be replaced with equally as good and cheaper alternatives. Now I think of it, even the Raser wouldn't be an out-and-out replacement for other sanding sticks; you can't cut and shape glass nearly as easily as paper/wood/soft plastic/etc. All in all, not strictly game-changing. Looks classy, I suppose. EDIT: On the other hand, I think the Joint Guard paper(? cloth?) is actually pretty decent. I could see myself using it, especially if it's as spongy/textured as it seems. Despite their general reputation, I've had plenty of recent Bandai kits with joint fit issues. It's a natural consequence of the move to more styrene-on-styrene joints. Sanding/shaving or glue/cement/gloss coat/etc. would probably take care of most issues, but there are definitely some places where I'd like to take the plastic itself out of the equation as a possible point of failure. Take a loose joint, tighten it slightly with these stickers, and they would bear the brunt of future forces placed on that area instead of the plastic they're stuck to. It would certainly be easier to replace them than to replace the plastic part.

Metal files, cheap, high grit sanding pads, and a nail buffer. If you can't find small enough files, just use a hobby knife, switch to a 2500-3800 grit sanding pad, go even higher (I use 10000) to work out the larger scratches, then use the nail buffer to get back that gloss finish on the plastic. The knife method is a bit more work and you have to be EXTREMELY careful or you'll end up with a knife in the bones of your fingers (not fun) but it's cheaper I think.
