One of the best looking rifles of the period. Love the gun room. The wooden floor rounds off the authentic ambience! Greetings from South Africa. My grandfather had a P14 in beautiful condition. My brother inherited it and I inherited a Mauser 1895.

M1917s are also called P17s on this side of the pond. The change from rimmed 303 Brit to .30-06 resulted in the M1917 magazine being able to hold six rounds. However, the .30-06 came on five-round stripper clips.

Excellent video, Thank You! You answered several questions I had about my newly acquired Enfield P14.

loved the video. The U.S. Rifle Model of 1917's that were sent to Great Britain had a red stripe painted around the fore stock. I have a 1918 made Eddystone that made it back home and still has a faint stripe visible. You can get 6 30-06 rounds into the magazine of a 1917, I'm thinking it's because the -06 is a timeless round. Can't wait until the next video!

While I agree the .30-06 is timeless, I believe you meant rimless. 🙂

Nice video on a somewhat overlooked weapon. Oddly enough, some of those (along with much larger numbers of SMLEs) came to Portugal after the Great War, presumably with the Expeditionary Corps which had been sent to France, and seem to have been scattered around some Army units for a great many years, even after the Portuguese Army adopted the Mauser Kar 98 in 1938 as its regular weapon.

I am surprised there are not more of these old warhorses around. I would like to shoot one, but have never had the chance. The .276 Enfield was a really overpowered round, comparable to the 7mm Remington Magnum i believe, it could have lead to entire armies flinching everytime they pulled the trigger !

I have considered making a replica P13. I am that daft! If you think it would be a good project, let me know.

@@TheWirksworthGunroom Yes it would be a rarity. .276 Enfield Brass is available in America. Getting a chamber reamer might be an issue though.
@TheWirksworthGunroom
@TheWirksworthGunroom 4 жыл бұрын
@@roeng1368 Chamber reamer not a problem in the UK as long as we can get the drawing. Might be worth considering a substitute cartridge that is comparable, I think Bloke suggested 7mm Rem Mag as being very close but I may have remembered that wrong.

I have an excellent WW1 era (Still had the rear volley sight) P14 I saved from a Pawn shop with a sporter stock that I restored with original Eddystone P14 parts and the trigger is fantastic. I believe they came straight from the factory that way.
@RabbitusMaximus
@RabbitusMaximus 10 ай бұрын
I think you mean the rear volley site only - because the front volley site was directly mounted on the stock which if yours has been sporterised is no longer there

Six fitting is on .30.06 The two vertical grooves on the bayonet hilt are to distingush it from a SMLE bayonet, the ring height and size are diffrent.

I've shot two Model 1917's and they both allowed six .30-06 rounds in the magazine.

Might not be a SMLE but it's still gorgeous rifle. Mind you, between you and BOTR you have made me really picky when it comes to bolt action rifles.

4:38 even the fal had a stacking swivel! The sa80 doesn't, i suppose because the user would be busy trying to get it to work rather than resting with his weapon safely stacked.
@TheWirksworthGunroom
@TheWirksworthGunroom 4 жыл бұрын
The FAL in British service (L1A1 SLR) didn't. I'd be interested in examples of FALs that did. I'm unaware of any country stacking rifles by the time SA80 was introduced. Yes it was crap though.

@@TheWirksworthGunroom hmm......i thought they did.🤔 but looking into it, i can only find the aussie l1a1 whith a split front sling loop, which might not be for piling at all. I also thought early m16's had them, so i may just be dim😕
@TheWirksworthGunroom
@TheWirksworthGunroom 4 жыл бұрын
@@randymagnum143 I can only speak for the British ones. A split sling swivel would allow for a sewn loop in the sling ends to avoid needing them to fasten to themselves.

that's very interesting that you show clear on the Rifle but then were able to immediately press the bolt back into battery. The P 14 has a magazine bolt stop so the soldiers knew when they were empty. Has yours been modified?
@TheWirksworthGunroom
@TheWirksworthGunroom 10 ай бұрын
The magazine follower has been modified so the bolt can be closed on an empty magazine. Don't know why or by whom. Was like that when it came into my possession.

We say thirty odd six in the states and they do hold six. Great rifle. We also say flaming bomb. My favorite US bayonet.

I've heard this and have to wonder how it came to be. Do you say Three Odd Eight? Three Odd Three British? Two countries divided by a common language as the old saying goes! :) Flaming Bomb - Noted, thank you.
@jrussk
@jrussk 4 жыл бұрын
The “odd” is likely a corruption of “aught” as in “nineteen-aught-six”. This pronunciation is common in the upper Midwest at least. Some areas of the US say “thirty OH six”. As to why aught vs naught, I have no idea.

I got some unfinished bayonet blades from Solingen. Stored there in crates since the trade embargo prior WWI . Do you know why there is a pattern with a longer ricasso and one with a shorter ricasso? All have the pommel attached with two pins ground flush and are braces on with a copper alloy. The guard also braced on (but only on two examples, others are without guard). Is yours also made that way? Do you thing they are worth more than making them into gardening tools? (The slot for the lug is not machined jet. I ask Eikhorn what it would cost and they say finishing them would cost 70€(or more) a piece.
