Yes, this song and this excellent cover are grossly underrated! I remember back in 1994, when I first heard this song on my "Use Your Illusion II" album, I was struck by how much emotional and melodic range was in this song. It is by far, my favorite song from Guns N' Roses, but much to my chagrin, it never got any airplay. It just simply wasn't commercially viable. It was too lengthy to cater to the short attention spans of radio music audiences. This song and this cover deserve more praise.

Axl wrote this and November rain by himself on piano He's piano playing is pretty damn good too
@tony.g205 жыл бұрын
@@nialldoherty9720 - this is not correct. November Rain he did write, originally clocking in on piano at over 25 minutes pre -1985. Estranged was very different. Axl spent many years writing the lyrics to the song, as the real story between him and Erin played out. The melody itself was comprised of 2 completely unrelated events. The first was a dream that Axl had in which one of those old rag-time much faster carnival barker show type show tunes, (think Groucho Marks on stage with a piano player) was playing in his head, so imagine a triple speed version of Estranged, but an entirely different melody. At some point Axl expressed and perhaps played his idea to Slash. The melody in this case, and unlike November Rain, was written by Slash during the famous 2 week summer sessions in Chicago that Axl was a no-show for. Mostly because of the excessive drug use within the band. In any case as confirmed by Slash in his book, the melody came to him quickly, and it was tracked and sent to Axl for approval. Because Axl wanted this song to be special, and because he was blown away with Slashs melody he calls it out within the UYI2 liner notes under the song.....'Slash..thank you for the killer guitar melodies'. There would obviously be no need to Thank him if Axl had written it.." Just wanted to clarify...

maybe it's just me, but --- Kurt Cobain said he hated guns n roses because they could not make any good music, he said that specifically, that and other things. but here is the thing. this and november rain have been 2 of my favorite songs since 1992, i still remember the party I was at when I first heard Estranged, in 1992. I had just started playing piano, and was trying hard to learn. Not many songs are in your current playlist that were also in a mixed tape as a punk 19 year old. as far as Nirvana goes, I just never got it, I admit they are good, i dont understand it, but their range was nowhere near this
@deepcreep986 жыл бұрын
I recently saw an interview with Kurt Cobain and he admitted that he actually thought GNR did some really good things. Also, he said he had toyed with the idea of touring with them, mainly because he enjoyed irony. Take it for what it's worth. Peace.
@rooh58256 жыл бұрын
Nirvana SUCKS compared to guns n roses. Sorry, it is true. The only thing Nirvana had going for it we're Cobain's ability to write lyrics, and the drummer. Guitar and vocals, terrible. Yeah I said it, and I'll state it again, it is true, I get so sick and tired of the ignorant hipster crowd crowing about Nirvana all the time. Nirvana didn't suck, but they weren't nearly the band that so many people make them out to be. Guns and Roses is Far and Away a better band
