I have straight hair with a bit of a wave, so real white peoples hair… And I actually decided to start dreadlocks because my hair would knot up so easily, it bothered me when it got long… I couldn’t wear a hoodie, or wool sweater, because after an hour I couldn’t go through it anymore with my hands… No matter how healthy my hair is, it kept doing that… I always loved the look of dreads, and am happy I finally got them… Never had such an easy hairstyle… So, some white people really have hair that locks up very easy… To me locks are freedom when it comes to my hair…

My straight hair locs are 5 years old now and I love the freedom they give me. I live in a pretty conservative area, I go to a small country church, and I never get any hate for my dreads - only love. Most of the people who stop to compliment me in public are from the black community. I didn't even know anyone had a problem with white people wearing dreads until I got on KZbin and saw the videos. It shocked me. I don't think Caucasians wearing dreads is cultural appropriation, it's cultural appreciation. Thank you for doing this video.

I'm white and have dreadlocks. Didn't 'get' dreadlocks, they are 100% freeform with no maintanence at all. They are very, very long now, and heavy. The bottom part is brown my original hair color, parts sun bleached from years, and the top half grey as they've grown older with me :) Dreads are the natural state of most hair, no need to get them made (just takes patience).

I've had straight hair dreadlocks for a while now. Gunther is right about the loose roots and loose tips. It's pretty much inevitable. Maintenance is key, but not as much as time and patience. One thing I would advise against is overusing the crochet hook. It's very easy to pull a straight hair out with a crochet hook and not realize it, then put that hair no longer attached to your scalp inside the matted section. I realize matted hair is FULL of dead hair, but pulling straight hair out of a root can be the death of a matted "loc" because only so much rooted hair can support the weight of so much matted hair before the roots can't handle the weight anymore and it falls off. Especially if they get soaked. I've only lost a couple, but both were while I was palm rolling after a wash.

The Irish have lore around locks claiming they're made by faeries dancing in your hair and bad luck to comb out. My hair requires little more than regular separating to lock. Regular separating because otherwise it'll all make one big paddle. I see way more maintenance of dreads on POC than mine ever needed. My hair will lock up all on its own. I'm Irish, scottish, norweigian, and native american. In other words quite white.

My son and I both have a half head of dreads. For him it's because his hair does in fact dread on its own!! He has straight hair. For me, my hair does the same as his with dreading on its own if the wind blows in the wrong direction.. and the 2nd reason why for me is because my hair is so flat and lifeless.. and that is lame as shit!! Also people do need to look up where dreads come from and who they were actually meant for. You'll be surprised to know that if people want to claim cultural appropriation, that in fact literally every single person is culturally appropriating, no mater your skin color. All I want to say, is who gives a shit what you wear or how your hair is. I hope your life is great and treating you well! ❤

@Shaggy-lu6dz4 жыл бұрын
Im personally a big supporter of freeforming. Let the hair grow, keep it clean, dont brush but separate the dreads when they try to congo together and thats it. That and the time and patience is all anyone really needs to start a unique set of dreads. Not a style for everyone though. It can get pretty wild looking at times whereas you can achieve a more uniform professional look from other methods if thats what you desire.

I have stick straight long hair and I had my hair in dreadlocks for around a year. I had to crochet them ALL the time because the frizz was ridiculous and when I finally got tired of crocheting them all the time and was tired of how heavy they were, I finally decided to brush them out. That took days and A LOT of conditioner. A crochet hook on straight hair RUINS it. Half my hair was almost to my butt and the rest of it ended up around my shoulders due to breakage from the hook (and I was gentle with that thing- or so i THOUGHT.) I cried when I went to go get my hair cut. If I had any recommendations for straight hair it would be to Palm roll only, NO crochet hooks more than once a month and absolutely no waxes or gels. Oh and make sure you dry them thoroughly because you can end up with mold in them. Also I feel like this should also be said- as a white person with dreadlocks you see people talking crap ONLINE- in real life I got loads of compliments on mine- especially from people who have them or had them- because they understood how much work I had to put into them. Don't let other peoples opinions hold you back from getting dreads as long as its something that makes you happy. Their opinions don't matter🤷

The only maintenance involved was pulling apart the matts when they formed so i could get more defined dreds. I dont maintain them at all apart from conditioning the ends when i wash my hair so they dont blunt. When they blunt i find i loose too much length. In saying that my dreads are FERAL lol. I have fat ones, skinny ones, flat ones bumps and lumps everywhere but my fine straight hair has never had a problem locking up. I think when people say white hair requires maintenance to loc theyre talking about keeping super neat locs. Cause all you have to do have them is not brush your hair. And dont use conditioner.
