Actually Chester is a competent gunfighter but only in the line of duty. He has outdrawn and killed at least one badman and once shot the gun out of a man's hand. Because he also provides comic relief, he's often underestimated. About the only thing he's not good at is minding the jailhouse; the scripts keep requiring him to lose a prisoner just to move the plot.
