Becuase Liggett & Myers sponsored the radio *and* TV versions of "GUNSMOKE" at the time- and they were competing with other tobacco companies to sell their brands.

Because without them you wouldn't have a show. The commercials sponsored and therefore paid for the show to be aired. Simple!
