I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
Crazy Town is a rap-rock group that shot to popularity in the early 2000’s thanks to their single Butterfly which propelled the group’s debut album to go platinum., The band’s story is full of tragedy and adversity & it really shouldn’t have been surprising since there was a lot foreshadowing even before the band formed. . Today Let’s discuss the history of Crazy Town and whatever happened to the group.
Formed in 1995 by two musicians Bret Mazur and Seth Binzer Mazur would adopt the alias Epic, while Binzer would be known as Shifty Shellshock Both musicians had an introduction to the industry early on in their lives with Binzer’s dad being an art director for Chess Records, working for Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters. His father even contribute to the cover art for Crazy Town’s debut album The Gift of Game. & Mazur’s dad meanwhile was a music manager whose clients included Billy Joel and at a young age he would move his family across the country to Los Angeles. Mazur’s father would take his son to recording sessions, where he was introduced to some of the best musicians in the industry but he also saw the dark side of fame recalling to Rolling Stone. “There were a lot of addicts around. There wasn’t nothing mysterious and cool about taking drugs for me.”
Mazur would attend the same san fernando valley high school as ice cube, brad wilk of rage against the machine and house of pain members everlast and dannyboy. At the age of 13 he got his first turntables and began breakdancing. He would earn money DJing at black nightclubs around LA & he would soon start his own production company with a DJ who was double his age This success led Mazur to drive fancy cars, and own his own 24-track studio but wasn’t passionate about mixing albums telling Rolling Stone how artist Sheena Easton forced him to change paths in life recalling
“She was no fun; I wanted to talk to her about Prince, and she wouldn’t say anything,” By 1993 Mazur was done working with Sheena Easton and began working with a hip hop group named Blood of Abraham who collaborated with members of another pop group named Black Eyed Peas. It would be Will I am who introduced Mazur to Binzer.
Binzer meanwhile went through a number of phases in his childhood gravitating towards extreme sports including dirtbiking & skateboarding while later becoming a punk rocker named Romeo and then a breakdancer named Paco while also becoming one of the few whites kids to partake in freestyle rap competitions around LA. Binzer would earn the name Shifty Shellshock for his criminal behavior including shoplifting at an early age telling Rolling Stone “I’ve always been dodgy. When I was younger, I was a shoplifter and then a graffiti artist. When I got older, I was a little shady dealing with women. I’d always be juggling a couple of them. He would go on to explain how he tried to rob a fellow drug dealer who was bad mouthing him and it resulted in Binzer being chased by the police and eventually getting away, resulting in him becoming one of LA’s most wanted. But the police would get their man arresting him at a 7-11 with him recalling to Rolling Stone "we got surrounded by cop cars at 7-Eleven. I was on Fox II News for an extra week, because they couldn’t find one of my friends, so they had my picture with Captured over my face. Binzer would end up serving three months in prison being relegated to the part of the jail typically reserved for murderers. Binzer would tell the LA Times "Until I got caught for everything, I kind of felt like I was this invincible Biggie Smalls bad-ass comic book character. All of a sudden it went from using drugs to being a drug addict, and it turned from robbing people and beating people up because that was the thing to do, to going to jail for it.
Mazdn’t finish my rampage for a couple of days, but he showed me that I had people who were worried and cared about me. Anthony’s this angel who appeared in my life" he'd say.
Following Binzer’s visit to rehab Crazy Town would get another shot at Ozzfest the following year. The band would also ready their follow up single Revolving door, which was in sharp contrast to Butterfly, promoting promiscuity.
Binzer would tell MTV" 'Revolving Door' is about being young, being single, having a great time, and then at the same time being like,

You can't let this get you though. I was thinking about it the other day and looking up old bands that I like. I can add another element of sadness to the story of Crazy Town's Butterfly. My childhood best friend absolutely loved this song.. he died in a fire in 2005 when he was just 18. Every time I hear it it reminds me of him. When we were kids we used to hang out in the pool halls and game arcades and when I was putting on music on the jukebox he always used to shout "Put on Butterfly!" and I would. I always remember it playing when we were playing games of pool or Sega Rally arcade with the rally seat and wheel etc (by the way he was always the absolute best at Sega Rally.. I could never beat him). He was a good guy.. it's true people always say that about people who die but he really was a great friend to have. He had somewhat of a tough life, he was a rock kid.. like myself, he liked a lot of rock and metal.. everything from Nirvana to Iron Maiden to nu metal like Slipknot which was still big at the time (early 00s). I had drifted apart with him for a while and had just started to hang out with him again, I was actually supposed to go hang out with him the night he died.. but for whatever reason I rain checked it, I think something came up and I said another time, then a day or two later I heard he had died in a house fire that night. Everyone knew his as "Turk", that was his nickname. Hard to believe that he's been dead over 15 years now. RIP Turk.

San Luis Obispo, 2010. Me and two friends walked to a nearby bar that wasn't even located downtown (95% of the bars in SLO are located there). The bar, the Z was nearly empty and as we walked in the bouncer asked if we were there for the show. Confused, we said no we just wanted to play pool. The bouncer told us Crazytown was playing and they'll be on soon. Since there was no one there they ended up scrapping the show and just hung out around the bar. I ended up meeting Shifty, played a game of pool w/him and smoked a few cigarettes. I remember thinking how Hollywood he looked because of his leather pants and boots. He also had a Napoleon complex because he had lifted boots and he was still shorter than me (I'm 5'9). He bragged a lot, particularly about the old days when this would have been a sellout show. I couldn't help but feel bad for the guy as I could tell he was embarrassed about the empty bar there for the show. Decent enough guy though, I wished him well when we left. We bumped "Revolving Door" when we got back to our apartment and had a good laugh.

Back in 2000 I was working at a goth shop in NY when in comes their singer, he was looking to buy a new belt buckle. My coworker and I had no idea who he was until he proudly mentioned his band and why he wanted the buckle .......my coworker " oh you're in a band, how nice!, me (crickets going off in my head)....he was obviously upset we didn't jump with excitement and so he stormed out of the shop! As an ex-felon convict I would actually point out that it's _possible_ although I also cringe every time I hear jail being referred to as "prison".. So, for very specific circumstances such as parole violation its actually common for guys to get hit with a 3 or 6 month sentence in the pen and they get cut loose after that time expires with a renewed parole or flattened sentence depending on the way the judge structures the time at sentencing.. Jussayin, although like I said, I agree that confusing jail with prison is unnerving for someone who has done a good amount of prison time. It's almost like attributing false honor to someone who's only been to jail by claiming they've done prison time and that's where the issue arises for us that appreciate the distinction being clear.

@Justin Last 2; agreed, it didn't grow on me like a couple of other Tool albums that I didn't immediately love...but I think that's an even bigger insult to the bandwagon elites, and the entitlement complex most of them suffer from. I dunno, at the time that the idea occured to me, it just seemed like an achievement for genres that are typically dismissed as a whole. And the achievement, I felt, could be used to cast light on the musical capabilities of, not just Tool, but so many other great musicians who should be able to hit the charts at the very least. Furthermore, the sheer dedication of metal fans across the board could be acknowledged here. The difference in the reasons behind a metal fans' support, and the majority of "popular music" fans couldn't get any more contrasted.
@randyblythe8255
@randyblythe8255 3 жыл бұрын
@rick keehn; yup, a week. Rage Against the Machine achieved something similar in the UK with Killing in the Name of recently. This channel DEFINITELY did a video/story highlighting that achievement, and the implications of such an achievement in regards to the metal and other anti-establishment based genres that don't achieve popularity (for what should be obvious reasons). THAT No. 1 Single (downloaded) slot was held for a day or two... maybe a week at most, but that's not the concept of focus here. 🤦‍♂️ The depth of people's inability to construct a thought, that wasn't programmed into their conceptual processing, is both astonishing and terrifying. I'm guilty of it as well, but I'm trying here.

I have to say I'm a bit young and i got to know this band through my mom. There were a few things at the beginning of they're career I didn't know about. But what i for sure can say is that i think Seth learned a lesson after his coma. He still smokes pot and I'm pretty sure he also relapsed a few times. But I met him in 2018 in Berlin and i still follow him on social media. He matured a lot. Since they're not that big i got to talk to him before the concert and he's actually so calm and nice. His douchebag times are over for sure.
