The Wallflowers came into the cafe I worked at in 2006. I said "that guy looks just like Jakob Dylan". "That IS Jakob Dylan! They've been coming in every night". When my shift was over about 3:00 in the morning, my coworkers were sitting out with them. I walked out the door and they all looked up at me. Jakob looked me in the eye, but I just waved and said goodnight. Bob Dylan's music was my obsession at the time, and I was NOT gonna sit there and insult Jakob years after he'd worked so hard to establish his own destiny. But of course, I always regretted not sitting with them.

I had the pleasure to go to many shows back in the late 90s and the band was so welcoming Before and after shows. I was welcomed into the tour bus on multiple occasions, got to be backstage with them and even got to gamble with Jakob in Atlantic city. My GF at the time was even brought on stage to sing with them. Jakob was always so kind and willing to converse with me on many things. Great band, a big part of my youth and a big part of my inspiration.

I saw them in New Orleans when I was in high school. My Mom brought me and we were in the front row. At the end of the show Jakob stood in front of us. He held his hand out for my Mom and he placed his guitar pick in the palm of her hand and closed his hand around it. We still have that pick today. It even survived Hurricane Katrina. Whenever we hear or see Jakob we smile!

I think they kept the fact that he was Dylan's son on the down low and here's why. I worked in a motorcycle shop in L.A. in the mid 90's and one of the regular customers was a really nice guy named Bill Richling. Bill often talked about his son's band and at one point had a windshield installed on his motorcycle that had a car stereo and little speakers mounted to it so he could listen to their tape. He gave us a copy, which I stuck in the ghetto blaster in the shop, and kind of forgot about. Turned out to be the Wallflowers. Bill talked about his son's band with us a lot, his son was the bass player. He never once mentioned that the singer was Bob Dylan's son.

I don't care what anybody says... Bringing Down the Horse by The Wallflowers is one of those MUST HAVEs if you love 90's pop/rock/folk music. One Headlight was everywhere and I LOVED IT... holds a strong anchor in my highschool memory for me. I still enjoy the Wallflowers music here or there but yeah it was never the same after this album. The one album that came close to almost recapturing the feeling of this album was Red Letter Days in 2002 but with then more modern production. I did enjoy Wallflowers cover of "Heroes" for the 1998 Godzilla soundtrack... because outside of an Oasis b-side cover, I thought the original version sounded so dated to me at the time as stupid teenager. The song "Ashes to Ashes" from The Wallflowers 1992 album was the sound of a folk rock band trying to keep up with alternative rock standards of the time... still worthwhile song imo.

I know their manager for their label whom gave me a signed poster of their first album. Crazy story related to poster. Stephen King was at a restaurant when The Wallflowers were meeting with record execs. Stephen said to lead singer. Have them buy us all dinner! Manager said if You play With them I will. So Mr. King jumped on stage and played with the Wallflowers. Thus the legend is born that they played that night together and signed my poster. 😮😮

Bringing down the horse is such an underrated classic '90s rock album!!! I bought the album, years ago, back in my school days, & listened to it constantly!! I loved every song on there!! I was hoping that the video would explain whatever became of the Wallflowers, after bringing down the horse.

I loved that horse album. It was played a ton at the time, but was really solid. The Marlena’s song got played out to me after a bit but the other singles I still love to this day. It’s a shame they never achieved that kind of success afterwards.

I always thought that album was their first. It was one of the first cd's I ever purchased, having existed on cassettes since childhood. lol. I picked up their most recent album Exit Wounds recently, and where it is nowhere near as catchy as BDTH, it is still solid songwriting and enjoyable to listen to. Honestly, I didn't realize they had been releasing any albums over the years, but that has a lot to do with the fickle state of the music industry and media more than anything else, and that all the half-way decent record stores in my area have been closed for decades.

@@rnrtruestories you made a small error with the ‘86 tour reference. Petty was asked if he would open for Dylan because Dylan needed an opener for his world tour. Tom was quoted as saying something along the lines of “the only person in the world I’d open for is Bob.” So TP&HB would play a set and then stay on stage and they were Dylan’s band and Tom shared vocals/did backup. Thanks for your content! Massive Wallflowers fan and they tend to be a little forgotten or underrated these days. As a lot of 90’s music is.

The name WALLFLOWERS to me undoubtedly came from a BOB DYLAN song called “WALLFLOWER” …its a deep dive cut released as a guest cut in the mid 70’s on an album by Texas 60’s artist DOUG SAHM of THE SIR DOUGLAS QUINTET . The song Wallflower was sung by BOB and was probably the best song on the record.

6th Avenue Heartache is the superior single. The vocal harmonies were kinda odd but it certainly worked. Not that One Headlight isn't a great song, 6th Avenue was just better and didn't get played out quite as much as Headlight. Oh and Jacob sounds like Bob Dylan if Dylan could actually sing. I'm glad Bob can't really sing because his voice was totally unique and it put more emphasis on his strongest attribute which is writing stellar lyrics. I think that's the best thing about rock music, anyone can be the vocalist. Some of the best front men and women can't carry a tune in a bucket. Mick Jagger can't sing but what a showman he is. Rock has always allowed voices to be front and center that wouldn't have been allowed in other genres, with country music also allowing unique voices as well.

My guess is Bob advised him to come out under a band name. In his case, The Walflowers so as to not be cast in his dad's shadow. This was the big mistake Julian Lennon made by going out as a solo artist. Looking and sounding exactly like John, put him straightaway in John's shadow. And the Walflowers, success speaks for itself.
