Yeah he doesn’t know what he’s talking about it seems. His ideas make since in like 2002 but now bands should just put their music out there themselves. Does having a record company make your music better? No. So why bother you can record professionally in your own basement and put it wherever you want online. You don’t have to know a guy that works at Spotify to get your song on Spotify. I realize it’s much more complicated than that but most acts don’t need record companies they need promoters.

Don't get me wrong....i'm 35+years in the trenches working for the Independents but doing it all yourself and even getting a promo person involved only creates a few Stars or even a working wage. Believe me, i've been talking to Indie labels till i've been blue in the face about investing more in what they do in this day and age but few are willing to take the risk and settle on being underground and whinge less about the little money they make. A major part of this has been the electronic shift...streaming is still massively biased in favor of the streaming service itself being the one that makes most of the money (basically becoming the overarching new Major Label that is making billions while aryists make very little in comparison ) and the weight that Major Labels still have in having stuff not only be more likely to be played on streaming but also they still have access (and control) of the radio stations and press and can get your music in adverts and in films. The old Indie Shops and certain DJs used to be places/people that new and innovative artists and labels could lean on to discover and promote new and independent artists. Now there is jus the randomness of what a streaming service may chose to play you (look, an algorithm is NOT the same as a human ear with experience playing a new track and saying "Shit!..this is GOOD!...HEY! YO!...Y'ALL NEED TO HEAR THIS!" Part of the Humans Vs A.I debate i suppose. Algorithms aren't listening to the music itself, they are jus saying "You liked that? All these other people who liked that also liked this...."). When you dehumaize something to this extent you lose everything real about what it is to be human. There is no passion, no instinct, no intuition. There is still a thriving Underground out there but it is fragmented and very hard to really garner recognition and sales. There are no longer any/many clubs that play NEW music alongside some classics of ALL genres. It's Techno night or a EDM night or a Metal night....Divided and conquered are the inquiring music fans. Thus its hard for makers of one genre to meld with makers of another and expand both their own taste, experience and share a fan base. Some labels and artists are fine with being Underground but that has stagnated the ability for the general populace to be exposed to music and people who create art full of soul and passion. Now most people are only and almost exclusively exposed to nothing but Pop music and one or two breakout bands. ....and if we are going to be fully rounded out with this breakdown....Video Games and the new generation of Consumers who are pretty dam happy jus being consumers. Music does not have the impact it once had. I'll part with saying i was fuckin lucky to be a part of the music industry in it's heyday from the mid 80s and through the 90s and early 00s with the greatest explosion of audio creativity in human history....and then computers took over. Like even his singing is similar, but just a little more commercially viable. Jakob can write some good tunes (obviously nowhere near his dad. Nobody can), but his real gift is that he has what his dad has but in a more pleasant package. I say this as a huge Bob Dylan fan, and I actually love Bob's voice. I'd be surprised, but it would be nice. I'm honestly not a fan of Joe anymore, but I would LOVE to see a 3 hour Bob Dylan interview. There were a thousand unsigned band for every band that got a deal. I made a living as a touring musician in the 90s. Met with record labels a few times, nothing ever really came of it. Without that label money, making a decent recording was out of reach. And how would you cover the costs of promoting it even if you did make a good record? Today a decent recording is within reach for anyone who can afford a MacBook and some decent microphones, and social media platforms can connect people directly with fans. I'd much rather be a budding musician in 2021 than 1991.

@@saaw8344 spotify pays 0.3 to 0.5 cents per track stream. to hit minimum wage, a band needs to hit a quarter million streams per month per person in a band. needing a million streams per month for a band with a vocalist, lead guitar, bass guitar, and drummer, just to hit minimum wage is ridiculous. youtube is even worse for music streams, cause they pay out 1/5th of what spotify does per stream. spotify is obviously raking in money hand over foot if they can afford to throw $100,000,000 at joe rogan for exclusivity, while they pay fractions of pennies on the dollar to artists.

Most creative people don't have the knowledge or desire to deal with the "hustle" and management of selling the creative piece. Most "numbers people" don't care to create art. So you get people on board who love your art, but only want to sell it and promote it while you focus on creation.

depending on where you at in your career. if you're only doing digital you can basically do everything independently and without a team to get your stuff out there - soundcloud, youtube, spotify... that's a thing anyone can handle on his or her own, no magic needed. no guarantee that someone discovers your music, but getting it on platforms is relatively easy. but as soon as you're selling physical product you should get at least your trusted local recordstore on board or even better find a distribution company to handle your records x tapes x cds which increases your potential reach exponentially. even if you're a relatively unknown artist.

As someone who was schooled in the music business in Nashville, by working for a producer. He got his name on several records as a co-writer. He would always say... "The real money is in songwriting". And as Dolly Parton famously said, when asked about Whitney Houston making (I will always love you) her song, ... "I absolutely love Whitney's version, and I don't care who sings it, just as long as I get paid". When it comes to radio play, only the songwriter gets paid.

For those who don't know, the typical deal for a new band pre-internet was 5% of 90% of albums shipped; so less than 50 cents per, and all of the costs for recording (and A&R parties, etc.) would be charged to the band. So double platinum would generate around 20 million, and a million bucks would go to the band, take out half for recording and BS expenses, 15% for the manager, the band members would be lucky to see 50k each- but if the label made you known, you could make bank on the road. There is ZERO reason for a label in 2021.

If you're capable of doing that, you don't need the label's money. You're likely already generating more than your cut with the old-style deal. I'm in a band, and we keep 100% of the revenue from our music. You know what 100% of $0 is? Record labels used to promote, fund, record, etcetera bands and musicians. The new model wherein a song is worth zero dollars, because it's free, does not work nearly as well. There's no radio to get on, no late night show that plays new bands, nothing. Bob Dylan would not be famous if he came up in this time- he got discovered by what's his name from Columbia Records and they helped make him famous. Leonard Cohen got into music because he could make a living off of it, when he couldn't from writing poems and novels. The record industry is the reason anyone's even heard of most of the greatest musicians who ever recorded a song. Give me a bad deal over no deal any day. I'd rather be broke with a thousand fans than broke with zero.

Artists are getting double fuck now since streaming platforms pay the labels for whatever they seem is fair for x amount of streams = y amount of 'album sales'. And for digital sales, platforms take their cut, which means the label got to take their cut + royalties, there's almost nothing left for the artist. This is why so many artists depend on touring. After saying that, streaming platforms are needed, same with social media platforms. Now, artists can bypass the middle man (labels) and do their own shit.

This is one of the few podcasts that really deserves to be listened to in whole on Spotify. I'm not big on Spotify but occasionally when I'm between audiobooks and no new music to listen to I'll open up Spotify and see if Joe has had any interesting guests. It took me a couple of days to get all the way through this on but I have to say it is one of the best/most interesting podcasts I've ever listened to. Jakob has earned his STRIPES!!!! he's extremely talented and yes his father is a goat, none the less jakob is extremely talented and has a great head on his shoulders. my first concert at age 12 was the Wall Flowers. my sisters took me to the Moore theatre in Seattle. we listened to the CD on the way down. and the show that was put on, was one of the best sounding live shows i have ever seen in my life. yes it was my first live concert. and since i have seen thousands of shows and nothing comes close to the: crips perfect tuned balanced projected control of sound throughout the entire band that i have ever had the privilege to experience. 2nd best sounding live show i have ever heard was Deftones in Everett Wa. it was an arena and the first couple bands sucked. the Deftones hit the floor and completely filled the new arena properly with sound and gave the best playlist a deftones fan could have asked for! also Jakobs women and country is an awesome record. he was the first live show i ever saw and the last physical cd i had ever purchased. that women and country album. thank you Jake and keep on doin for you and sharing with us please. i appreciate what you've done and created.
