You would be surprised at how many people I have come across who believe you have to hold the carbine in front of the cylinder.
@thedogmen.7 күн бұрын
I mean, they were originally designed to be held that way, just like a traditional rifle. however, after hundreds and hundreds of years of chainfires and palms full of blackpowder residue, people just started holding it like an extended revolver.

From personal experience I’d comfortably say that blunted conical bullets give a flatter surface to deliver more stopping power but does take away from the intended penetration. Great video, always a pleasure to watch.

I love mine!!! You get .357/.45 super performance out of a repeating muzzleloader not a bad option. Also it weighs as much as a .22. It’s insanely handy to carry not a bad balance for the woods close range defense. Also that long gun is way way easier to load up. Basically IMO the gun essentially doubles as a loading tool. And the grip is not nearly as awkward as it looks. It actually works pretty well cuz it’s really rear heavy so it balances rather natural. I imagine the original with 24-26” barrels were more awkward???

I been shooting my 1858 Carbine for 9 years, wore out the mainspring, replace it. Replaced the nipples with Slixshot nipple. Removed the loading lever, replace with the quick release. The cylinder is reloaded with a press. I shoot competition with a club using X sticks. Found out that front sight broke loose and the set screw reset with lock tight. It’s extremely accurate at 25 & 50 yards and can place 5 rounds on the 100 yard target, not grouping though. I have the cartridge cylinder but have not used it yet. I place a towel on shoulder so that curved stock does not bruise my shoulder.

The guitar that Kurt Russell smashed in The Hateful Eight was an actual antique Martin guitar on loan from Martin Guitar Co. In house museum. They were supposed to say cut and swap the a antique worth about 80k out for a disposable prop guitar. Russell when he didn't hear them call cut assumed that they had already swapped it out for the scene. The dismayed Whoa!! Whoa you hear Jennifer Jason Leah yelling. Is her knowing that the guitar. being beaten to kindling is in fact the real irreplaceable Martin guitar that was a survivor from the time line the movie was set in. It was said when Kurt Russell learned that he had destroyed such a valuable instrument. That he got tears in his eyes.

I agree about the butt plate. It could stand to be larger as most of us have been trained to keep the butt of the rifle as far into the shoulder as is comfortable. Nevertheless it is very accurate at carbine ranges. It's almost difficult to get a loose group

Dustin, it's one of my favorites too. It's funny, you mentioned the exact same issues I had with it, the blowback to the face, and the odd shoulder mounting. I'm not tall like you, for I'm only 5'8", but it still fit weird. I'm not going to lie, it bugged me to get sprayed in the face. I solved the issue, I just bought a conversion cylinder in 45 LC and the problem was solved. Mine, like yours, was rather accurate too. It is a wall hanger. Mine is displayed proudly with 2 other black powder rifles that are hanging. I'll share the photo of where I hang mine on you FB page.

So, I have to ask: Is it normal for your New Model Army to shoot better WITHOUT lube? I got mine to the range for the first time a week ago, and it shoots much tighter at 25 yards without lube at all, and virtually no fouling at all. I put 20-30 rounds through it without cleaning it, and the last 4 shots of the day landed in a 1-inch group, and that was the best group of the day.

If the rear sight on your carbine is like the one on my Pedersoli .54 mountain rifle the screw on the rear sight (4:07 mark on the video) does not go into the barrel it only anchors the rear sight so it doesn't move after you drift it for azimuth adjustment. Could you check your carbine to see if this is or is not the case?

Last year Cabelas had a Lee 200gr RN Conical 2 Cavity Mold for Cap Ball Revolvers. I'm just trying them out in my Pietta 1960 and 1858 but they seem to give good accuracy at 15 to 25 yds. Ive got your Cartridge former and they seem to load well in the 1858 but the 1860 is an issue with both Round Ball or conicals in Paper Cartridges, but both work fine with Loose Powder and Wads. My 1860 has not been altered for easier loading as I've seen done in some videos. Any tips are weicome. I loved this video.

@danielcurtis143411 ай бұрын
Wait how does Remington deform balms differently than a colt would? Also is the debt enough to negate the extra 60 grains of mass? A bigger issue is Uberti uses .450” chambers. So you don’t get a shave and you get a loose fit bad for chain fire potential.

The lever linkage on this gun is poor and with a bit of shooting and loading the link will break. However as a machinist and gunsmith I found that the link can be replaced with a superior item in that the plates from a chain say chain fits perfectly and out lasts the original link.
