Great demonstration. This is exactly why you zero your rifle in the position you plan to take the shot, if at all possible. No benches in big game hunting and if you plan on shooting at game that far it's best to do it prone... again if at all possible.

You say "you can see" that on the bench the recoil is straight back, however the barrel was not shown on these shots. But on the bipod shots the barrel goes up about the diameter of the barrel with each shot. Just an observation. POI data is what it is, but the barrel does rise close to an inch.

Is it shooting lower because the rifle itself is physically 4 feet lower, so the ballistics would have it attempting to climb that extra 4 feet over 955 yards, while the bench shot had no need of climb, thus the second shot is more energy intensive causing the low strike? (ie. it ran out of energy, possibly a more powerful round would have been dead on as well?)

the change in elevation on when he started on the bench and moved the the floor is about 3 1/2 feet wouldn't that change the impact down range since he is shooting from a different angle?
@TrailTribune8 жыл бұрын
No, the hypotenuse of a 995y by 3.5ft triangle is not significant enough of an increase in distance to warrant a 5" impact shift. The POI shift is due to the recoil impulse's effect on a shift in position. Not all of the forces on the rifle are equal from one position to the next, so when the rifle recoils, it will do so at a slightly different angle/plane, causing the bullet to exit on a tangent to the bore's original axis when you pulled the trigger.

All these rests, scopes,bipods, tripods,ballistic calculator gadgetry,spotting scopes and spotters, etc., are a world apart from purists. No doubt they are effective and even necessary for long range. Lots of equipment to lug around out in the field though. Heck I still love grabbing a 30-30 and hiking into the northeast woods with a plain set of binoculars all by my lonesome. I got to admit, for a guy that likes to keep it simple, all the equipment for long range has added a whole new dimension to shooting that is interesting. It has surely stepped things up a notch or two. Did I mention without a custom rifle and expensive scope it's hard to achieve consistent proficiency at long range? Time to break open the wallet.And how many of us have access to 1000 yard shooting? These long range guys are very impressive though. I wouldn't want to be at the other end of their sights and muzzle-that much is certain. lol.

How much pressure should the butt of the stock be on your shoulder? I only have a .308 but the damn thing keeps jumping on me. Either to the left or right. I can't follow through. I'm guessing I have it too tight against my shoulder.
@toddb85408 жыл бұрын
+Villamor78 - usually, if the rifle is moving left or right it's due to your natural point of aim being off. Try getting behind the rifle with the crosshair on target then close your eyes and go through several breathing cycles while you relax your body. Then open your eyes. If the crosshair is still on target your NPA is correct. If not, move your body and the rifle as one and repeat the test.

@cooperpizzini28168 жыл бұрын
most bolt action rifles don't have a detachable mag bud. and when shooting at targets for this purpose, it is not necessary to have a rapid follow up shot, it can Actualy reduce your accuracy. as you shoot more and more, the barrel heats up both from the friction of the bullet and the heat of the expanding gasses, reducing the over all accuracy of the riflr.as the heat is generated, the properties of the barrel itself will change causing it to become inconsistent. And when it comes to precision shooting, consistency is the name of the game.
@youtuberschannel128 жыл бұрын
Cooper Pizzini You sure about that? Don't you think loading up your mag first before shooting will have greater consistency cause you can just operate the bolt and not take the bullet and insert it one by one? If you can operate the bolt without doing other things you can keep your cheek and maintain sight picture therefore maintaining consistency
@cooperpizzini28168 жыл бұрын
Its easy t9 controll where you position yourself on a rifle. But you can't controll the heat so you need to minimize it in every way possible
@youtuberschannel128 жыл бұрын
Cooper Pizzini What does loading your mag with rounds got to do with controlling the heat?
@landiex27748 жыл бұрын
+youtuber Personally, I like loading one round at a time. I'm not a professional or long distance shooter, but I've found that for me. It forces me to slow down, and try to make every shot count, because I know I don't have another bullet ready to go. to me it isn't about heat, or even consistency. It's just the mindset of each shot is its own shot. It's own practice if you will. If i just aim a gun and hold it there to hit the same spot each time i'm not really learning anything. I like loading one at a time, because it makes me readjust my aim each time. that's just my two cents, and I hope it makes some sense haha.

bibods don't cause your rifle to "muzzle up" or otherwise move off line. Bad technique causes that. If a shooter gets strait behind the rifle with a good natural point of aim the rifle will recoil strait an to the rear. It makes no difference if you are on soft ground or a hard smooth surface nor how much recoil the rifle generates. The rifle will not move off line if your technique is correct.
@campsitez23559 жыл бұрын

@campsitez23558 жыл бұрын
videoS plural.
@user-cb2zd9cr5w8 жыл бұрын
rdsii64 is 100% correct. This guy's technique is poor in a couple areas. First, the different zero prone vs bench is all due to recoil management. He is letting the gun almost free recoil on the bench because he isn't stacking his dead weight behind the gun. He is loading the bipod correctly and therefore stacking his dead weight behind the rifle, albeit not straight behind which is what you're supposed to do. His zero prone is the correct zero. It is known that free recoiling a rifle like he is on the bench will cause impacts to be high, which is what we see here. Second, his trigger control is not correct. He places the tip of his finger on the trigger instead of the 1st pad and doesn't obtain a 90 degree angle on his trigger finger. Therefore his finger does not come straight back on the trigger. When you fire the rifle with this trigger placement you push the rounds to the right which is what we see in the prone shooting. In conclusion, the zero on the rifle is the same in all positions, but it is the shooter's job to drive the rifle correctly in all positions. The rifle/scope is an inanimate object and doesn't know if you're shooting from prone, kneeling, standing, etc. Run the fundamentals properly and the zero will not change.
@campsitez23558 жыл бұрын
