After this watching this interview, I am so impressed with this guy. He did not look down on all traditional Martial Arts but seek to improve it them by exposing the weaknesses and teaching the truth in Modernisation. That was what Bruce Lee did 50 years ago before his death. Thats bullshit, traditional martial art is not tuned for competitive MMA fighting. If you put a Judo master in a MMA ring, that Judo master, how good he may be, he will lose. Traditional Martial art is just that, ART. And can be only competitive in the same style class. It's like putting a boxer in a MMA ring, or putting a MMA fightiner in a boxring with boxing rules, wont work either. What it comes down to is, respect the Art, dont be arrogant. ​@@Gieszkanne The problem is that taijiquan is a very sophisticated art and there were more masters before the Europeans took their guns to China and then even fewer as a result of the Cultural Revolution which nigh obliterated martial arts there. Good fighters in numbers are a threat to the authorities as the Boxer Rebellion proved. Real masters of application are old and dying, if not dead already. They lived during an age when fighting skills meant something and were needed. They turned it into a harmless sport an, as a result, Olympic competitions have replaced traditional systems that require decades to master. I always hope that true gongfu still lives underground and realises that capitalism is just as much of a threat as communism was. But that's largely a fantasy I expect. There are many, many Chinese masters who teach abroad however. Techniques inherited from another age however.

thanks!! I really like xu xiaodong and feel bad that he's been forced into hiding. I understand he's being a little cocky but he's also trying to make wushan better and return it to it's former glory by doing this. he is right that it has changed a lot and that it's more about making money these days rather than really fighting. Imagine it from his prespective he probably idolized wushan as a child like all of us do but then when he grew up and learnt it couldn't be used in real fighting he got very upset. I really hope Chinese people realize what he is trying to do because people in the west really respect what he is trying to do. I just wish he would do it with a little bit more respect but I can understand his frustration. I just think if China ever wants to be taken seriously in the world of fighting it needs to either revive the ancient deadly methods of wushan or try to modernize it in someway. mma was America attempt to modernize traditional martial arts and I think that's why it is so ugly​ yet so effective. if the Chinese really work at it they can make it into something far greater than mma but they need to be willing to listen to people like xu xiaodong. as of now American fighting style is superior to Chinese and I think that is very sad because China has the power to have the best fighters in the world. so stop getting mad at people who threaten stability because this guy has China's best interest at heart and is just trying to show Chinese people what those in the west have known since the late 90s.

those guys thing wing chun was great because of ip man movie or because bruce lee started with that style. fact is, even in the movie, it was explained that ip man has always improved the wing chun style he learnt, adding attacks or grapples which are not traditionally from wing chun, to make it his own style. so the wing chun people see in the movie is not really wing chun at all, wing chun has no high kicks or grapples. even in real life, what made bruce lee the most deadly fighter in history wasn't wing chun, wing chun was his base style, but he took wing chun and many other fighting styles and added them to his own fighting style which he called jeet kune do. he also trained his own body so that he can perform kicks and punches so fast that literally nobody can see coming. that alone was enough to beat any mma fighter

Wow, I applaud this man's candor and bravery. I have never heard such truer words coming from a Chinese representative of the fighting arts. I have always said exactly what he said. Chinese competitions in China are to a great extent rigged in favor of the host country , China. I have also noticed that when they fight there the fighters physiques are different than when they send fighters to other countries. This leads me to believe that performance enhancing drugs are being used there which are not monitored in their own country. Overseas they would have to submit to drug testing. I am not saying that China cannot produce high quality fighters, but they have to stop being scared of losing to foreigners in overseas competitions. They will only learn and get better by losing and correcting their mistakes. China has world class athletes of every kind and they can do the same with their fighters.

john bagyan Maybe. My opinion is that martial art masters train their art for defending themselves. There should be incorporated a meditation training and philosophical thinking and peaceful behavior. There are many things except of fighting. Disciple is learning how woks his body etc. It is a way of life. In UFC there is only fighting. So training is focused on fighting with accessories, referees and rules. The goal is to win. I am not talking that MMA is bad or traditional martial arts are better. I am saying it is very different. It also matters on how you train.

I do Chen, Yang and Sun styles Tai Chi, and what I benefitted from all these were a more peaceful mind, stronger leg muscles, and joints which were well lubricated due to use. How about better health? The answer is, I can't prove it. Some people may say, if you didn't do Tai Chi, your health would have been terribly bad, and whatever state of health you are in now is because you practise Tai Chi daily! How to argue with that? I can only say that I can't prove it, and I don't feel that Tai Chi made me healthier. As to whether my Tai Chi can save me if I am attacked, my honest answer is: No, it can't. I was not taught to use Tai Chi to fight, or for self defence. I was taught to do Tai Chi beautifully, and the rest was up to me, whether I developed stronger legs or felt calmer, that's all.

Thank you for sharing. I know a cultish traditionnal school who tried to take advantage of this stories and try to teach moral lessons with paraboles. The self-brainwashed students of Shaolin Wing Chun Nam Anh Kung Fu sect in Canada an Vietnam think they are guardian of the tradition and the moral values. Pierre François Flores wanted to fight with Xu for that. But when you know that this man lies and cheat many times, like his Grand Master, it's make me laft. For exemple, in one fight, he KO a his opennent easily because the man doesnt know he was in a real fight (he think it was a friendly sparing). Another exemple, Flores was beat down by Tuan, a Vietnamies fighter and then after he and his Grand-Master claim that he was poisonned before the fight.(Go see on youtube: Flores vs Tuan) After his defeat, his fake Grand Master set up a fake challenge betewen Flores and one of his student and mask his face with a helmit only to show that Flores can win. So don't listen the moral lesson and the bullying of some cultish organisation like Nam Anh Kung Fu.

That whole thing is a bunch of crap. The one guy claims to be "MMA". What does that stand for? "MIXED MARTIAL ARTS" So why is he using boxing techniques? Same thing with ALL MMA you see on TV. I think any of the Old Yang style first 3 generation grandmasters could have wiped the floor with this guy. Remember Yang Shao Hou could barely keep any students because he sparred for real no pads and hit vital pressure points in full speed free fighting like it was going out of style. I think he may have killed a student or two it was years ago I read this. Knocked student's out left and right in free fighting. I mean knock them out full speed with Jin. His sparring was vicious fighting. Yang Luchan and Yang Ban Hou were both "Yang the Invincible". The problem is they guarded their neigong skills so tightly that nobody got the real deal outside a few disciples. Also stopped training the fast forms combat drills and real free fighting. Each generation people just stopped training hard using it to fight and actually fighting each other with it. And got more and more diluted techniques. In the olden days they used to practice golden bell hitting each other with short power to damage their organs and other internals. If your golden bell wasn't good you weren't training the next few months after sifu hit you 🤣 Go see the TCM doctor and qigong master for healing 🤣 Well some of the Yang teachers were nice enough to help students heal after destroying them in training with actual dangerous Jin used. There are some great books on this. Anyways, noone knows for sure. Records are the first few generation of Yangs could wipe the floor with the young Shaolin and other wushu fighters. I also can't belive this guy didn't mention Hsing-I Chuan. Those guys used to win a lot of the old Chinese tournaments by actually killing their opponent in the match. They were not afraid to express their Jin into meridian points and organs. Without actual practice getting hit and hitting in real combat you can't become a good fighter no matter what your style. That's the biggest problem along with the dillution of techniques and all the secrecy and having students, disciples and lineage holders(s). And only the 1 to 5 lineage holders who got the real art could fight like the previous generation master. Look up Liang De Hua for a modern Yang Shouhou lineage holder teaching publicly online.

@@greg6509 It is such a shame that so much has been lost and so much dilution has occurred. There were people saying this even almost 100 years ago so it's not as if it's a recent thing. Even when Yang Chengfu was alive, I remember reading something about him sighing that he would never attain the level of his father or grandfather. There was apparently something on Yang Jianhou's bedroom wall that showed the levels of the early Yang members. Luchan was at level 8, Jianhou at level 6, Banhou at level 5 and Shaohou at level 4. Maybe Yang Luchan was just exceptional. I would love to know what his Tai Chi looked like and what his fighting looked like. Yeah I've read before about the brutality of Xingyiquan and how they used to win a lot of tournaments. Bagua masters also had some great feats if some of the stories are true. During the Boxer Rebellion, when foreign troops attacked the palace of Duan Wang (who's was planned to be future emperor at one point) a lot of people were killed and the Bagua master Ma Gui was one of the only survivors. Prince Duan Wang's daughter or granddaughter later wrote “the foreign soldiers came in with orders to wash the palace with our blood, in the end only a few of us made it out. I saw Master Ma Gui cutting a bloody path through the sieging armies.” Why would a daughter/granddaughter ofan important prince write nonsense? I follow Liang Dehua on Facebook. I like his posts about Tai Chi history and stories. He's also posted a few photos I hadn't seen before - one of Yang Shaohou I hadn't seen anywhere else and one of Yang Banhou's family.

One of the worst things I've seen now is the Martial Arts community calling any practitioner who demonstrates authentic internal skill in sensing hands commonly known as push hands as a fraud. Everybody just wants to use external power in tai chi movements. Everyone's like no that wouldn't work in a fight. Of course it wouldn't that is sensing hands training and training fajing long power. Instead of encouraging its development the community just screams fraud because they can't do and even taiji practitioners they can't do it but they studied for years under a William CC Chen or similar. If the master has to teach boxing to compliment the Tai Chi, it's not Tai Chi Chuan. I'm happy to see schools like Gin Soon Tai Chi practitioners produce skilled internal students like Sifu Dimitri Mougdis. Watch his Fajing Classical Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan video on the tube. Also to see teachers like Sifu Adam Mizner work their butt off to develop high level internal skill. Who cares if he doesn't have a perfect lineage he worked for it and has ten times the skills of most modern lineage masters and can explain and demonstrate and more importantly teach his students to reproduce his skills and the various Jin in the classics. My attitude is I'm just gonna focus on the teachers and learning from the teachers who have the real internal skill however they got it 🤣 All the stories of Yang Luchan defeating the hard style palace guards and others without hurting them but with controlling and launching them effortlessly without Li. Compare that to push hands competitions now that are an external force joke. I think the teachers I mentioned above at least give me hope that Yang Luchan's skills aren't fully lost!
