I went to Japan this last winter (over new years) konbini are the most stressful places. about 70% of the places i would go, the staff spoke english well enough. (i speak some japanese, but impromptu conversations are still difficult). the konbini I went to almost never knew any English. Luckily I only had to ask questions of the staff a couple of times.
