I went to Japan last week and it was my first time there. I went to 7-eleven to buy foods on my first day. Even though I don't understand what the cashier is saying, I just say "hai" and nod to whatever he said lol. He microwave my food and gave me chopsticks and bag. I used to work as a cashier in fastfood so I know that the universal rule is just nod your head if you don't understand what is he saying. Most of the time it works.
