@@kmart111 of course it is the pilot's responsibility - they know what the straps are, where they should attach and so on. I'm a tandem hang gliding instructor. I have logged about 1000 hours of tandem flight time. I am so sorry about what happened to you. It is inexcusable that the pilot didn't do a hang check to make sure you were clipped in and all the straps were straight. The pilot should have his rating pulled or resign from ever flying tandem again. On a funnier note, I know of a man who had planned a tandem flight with his dog. In his case, he did hook his dog into the glider. Unfortunately, he forgot to hook himself in. He launched his dog off into the air and he fell to the ground. The dog flew around solo for a few minutes and eventually crashed back to earth. The dog was in good shape. Very unfortunate about your wrist and arm. I wish you a good recovery.

I say it’s fake.....no one can hang on that long even with adrenaline. If you don’t believe do slow the playback speed at 0.25 and notice 1. Not all wind effect is the same on lose hanging straps. 2. The biggest give away is when the un-clipped passenger is holding onto to the trousers of the pilot with his right hand...BS!! His arm is at a 90 degree angle and holding his trousers by his fingers.....if this were correct you would see the evidence in the mans trousers been drawn in tight lines and he would be half losing his strides.....!! 3. When he fell down on take-off he did not drop heavily enough and most people would not have time to take a firm grip. 4. If you don’t believe go outside and see how long you can last by holding on....double that time with adrenaline and there is the maximum ...... I say it’s a fake. Don’t bother name calling, just look for yourself see and give me you thoughts.

@jet guy not very well versed, eh? its a well known emergency in hang gliding (and paragliding also has a similar issue) and it happens constantly since the dawn of the sport. its not a jet you know, stressful real life starting conditions can cause this for very experienced pilots also. thats why it has procedures to deal with if it happens. what you wrote is like how people from the office desk imagine this sport. btw the pilot in the video made a very bad choice. as you cannot know to any certainty how long the passenger could hold himself, he should have turned into a tree immediately even if it causes some injury .

The fact that you held on with just your hands, at moments just 1 hand... FOR 2 MINUTES 30 SECONDS... That's unreal man. You had the wind fighting you as well. @@fc1133 Not really. He dropped at like 10 feet or less but 5 seconds into flying (where most people would have dropped) was still 40+ feet on a hill, and your probably going to break an ankle and go flying down the hill at a high speed which means more damage. the only chance for people who would have held on past the tree's is handing on a tree and hitting and breaking every branch on the way down,it would hurt. But slow your fall enough to survive. then again there have been people who survived falling out of airplanes with nothing to help them. So its possible.

Back in my day when I used to hang glide, after checking the glider to make sure the wires, and all the fittings are secured the most critical check thereafter is to make sure you are strapped/hooked in at the hang point. I would always double, and triple check that I was hooked in before takeoff. Your instructor committed the most basic, and inexcusable error by not ensuring that you were attached to the hang loops, regardless of the fact that he did a good job getting you down to the landing area ASAP.

Very fortunate to be alive. I witnessed a solo hanglider pilot launch unclipped at the bowl by the London Gliding Club at Dunstable Downs. Luckily he dropped about 6m onto the grassy slope and was uninjured. His glider crossed the bowl without him and hit the opposite side of the bowl. The impact was very sharp and metallic. The pilot retrieved the glider and after a steep clim back to where we were he started to re-rig. We argued with him that his rig needed a professional inspection. Eventually he realised that we were right.
