Guru yoga is a central practice in Tibetan Buddhism that involves cultivating a deep relationship with one's spiritual teacher or guru. In this practice, the student recognizes the guru as a source of wisdom, compassion, and spiritual guidance, and develops a strong connection with them.
The practice of guru yoga typically involves several components, including visualization, mantra recitation, and meditation. The student visualizes the guru in front of them, surrounded by an aura of light, and generates a feeling of devotion and gratitude towards the guru. The student then recites the guru's mantra, often in conjunction with a visualization of the guru's body, speech, and mind merging with their own.
Through this practice, the student seeks to develop a deep understanding of the guru's teachings and to internalize their wisdom and compassion. Guru yoga is considered a powerful method for transforming the mind and developing spiritual realization, and it is often practiced as a preliminary to other tantric practices in Tibetan Buddhism.
